SEVIERVILLE — Dobyns-Bennett qualified all 13 of its wrestlers to next weekend’s sectionals at Morristown West and easily won Saturday’s Region 1-AA individuals tournament team title with 230 points.
Morristown West was a distant second with 177 while Science Hill was third (147.5).
The top four in each weight class advanced to the sectional.
Bryson Church (106), Mason Jakob (120), Derek Winseman (126), Kennedy Watterson (132), Jimmy Taylor (175), Jake Dempsey (190) and Garrett Crowder (215) were all crowned champions for the Indians.
The other qualifiers were Quinn Vetter (fourth, 113), Wyatt Rogers (fourth, 138), Kris Cantu (third, 144), Drew Vetter (third, 150), Austin Conners (third, 157) and Gavin Crowder (second, 165).
For Science Hill, Arthur Silva claimed gold at 150 with a pin of Sevier County’s Michael Thomas (3:22).
Saxon Mattison (third, 106), Robert Scott (third, 113), Chase Smalling (second, 120), Bryson Wilhjelm (second, 132), Andrew Kneisley (second, 144), Sean Scott (third, 165), Nowlin Saylor (third, 190) and Haiden Cox (second, 285) all qualified for the sectional.
West Ridge’s Jacob Belcher won a title at 157 with a pin of Jefferson County’s Waylon Holt (1:44). Brady Chatman also qualified for the Wolves by finishing runner-up in his weight class (138), and so did Brayden Ray (third, 175) and Ethan Foreman (fourth, 215).
D-B’s Jakob and Science Hill’s Smalling were named co-wrestlers of the year. Jakob dealt Smalling his first loss of the season (44-1) in the finals with a 7-2 decision.
REGION 1-A
JONESBOROUGH — David Crockett had more region champions, but Tennessee High had more points in the Region 1-A individual tournament.
With 229 points, the Vikings claimed the Region 1-A team title. Crockett finished second with 194.5 team points, and Sullivan East (174) took third.
Deter Thompson (36-1) continued his remarkable freshman season for Crockett, defeating Greeneville’s Gabriel Oakley by a 15-4 major decision to claim the 106-pound region title.
Jake Ferrell (39-2) pinned Greeneville’s Derrick Day in 1:33 to claim the 138-pound title, and Colton Ferrell (33-8) pinned Tennessee High’s Dominick Reynolds in 5:19 at 175. Hunter Meadows (1-0) scored the fall on Tennessee High’s Landan Taylor in 3:29. Felix Duncan (34-5) took 157 by medical forfeit over Greeneville standout Angus Herrell.
Sullivan East had two region champions, starting when Owen Griffith (14-3) pinned Tennessee High’s Kash Emmett in 3:20 to claim the 120-pound division. Marshall Jones (12-1) scored the fall on Crockett’s Alex Ingle in 3:54 to win at 190.
Max Minor (132), Aiden Burton (144), Elijah Moore (150) and Kalel Honaker (165) all won their respective divisions for Tennessee High.
Crockett’s Brayden Vance (285), along with East’s Josh Turpin (126), Austin Osborn (144) and Donovan Smithpeters (150) each finished runner-up.
For the Pioneers, Nolan Rankin (120), Ethan Greear (150) and Anthony Lastra (215) all qualified for sectionals as did East’s Jimmy Johnston (106), Trysten Walde2n (113), Bentley Keys (132), Jake Turpin (138) and James Roberts (165).
Volunteer’s Aiden Calton (144) and Daniel Rooker (120), along with Elizabethton’s Aiden Morley (285), Roman Shelby (132), Brock Shelby (138), Lucas Howell (144), Jacob Smith (190) and Andrew Blevins (215) all punched their tickets to next week’s sectional round with top-four finishes.
The Class A sectional will be held Saturday, Feb. 17, at Gibbs.
SWIMMING
TISCA MEET
NASHVILLE — Michael Wissert was close to all-state honors for D-B but came up short again in the one-meter diving competition, finishing fifth for the third consecutive year at Saturday’s TISCA swimming and diving championships at the Centennial Sportsplex.
His final score of 403.40 was less than four points out of the final all-state spot of fourth.
Kingsport Area Swim’s Abby Adams was the area’s only all-state finisher, claiming fourth in the 100-yard backstroke with a swift time of 56.43 seconds.
On Friday, D-B sophomore Evie Dillinger finished seventh in the 200 IM (2:08.73), which was a season’s best. Teammate Georgia Morton finished ninth in the one-meter diving with a score of 271.80.
McCallie easily won the boys title with 397.5 points while Girls Prep narrowly beat out Ravenwood for the girls title by one point (220-219).
BOYS BASKETBALL
Gate City 47, Dobyns-Bennett 46
KINGPORT — In one of the wildest endings of the season, Gate City came out on top in an interstate battle to cap the regular season at the Tribe Athletic Complex.
Gate City senior Jacob “Bobo” Bowman — the team’s manager for the season who had never played basketball before — was called upon late in the game and banked in a 3-pointer at the top of the key with three seconds remaining.
On the ensuing inbounds, D-B threw it out of bounds and Gate City got the ball back. Gabe Johnson scored on the inbounds play to give the Blue Devils the win.
Gunner Garrett led Gate City with 17 points and Eli McMurray had 10.
Major Dawson and Jeremiah Jones each had nine points to lead the Indians.
Sullivan East 68, Cloudland 34
BLUFF CITY — Corbin Laisure and Tyler Cross combined to shoot 12-of-23 from the floor, scoring 15 and 13 points respectively for the Patriots on senior night. Drake Fisher buried three 3-pointers and added 11 points, while Zach Johnson scored nine.
Cooper Smith and Nick Caraway both had 11 for Cloudland.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Gate City 47, Eastside 44
GATE CITY — Jaydyn Carrico continued her high-scoring ways, netting 28 of Gate City’s points en route to the win.
Lexi Carter led the way for Eastside with a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds while Taylor Clay had 11 points and six assists.
Cloudland 61, Sullivan East 44
BLUFF CITY — The Lady Highlanders trailed 28-27 at the half but dominated the third quarter 24-10. Izabella Christman scored a game-high 20 points, and Ryan Turbyfill had 17.
Asia Cairns scored 13, and Kylie Hurley had 10 on Senior Night for the Lady Patriots.
