University High senior guard A.J. Murphy has been selected to the Class 1A boys basketball All-State team by the Tennessee Sports Writers Association.
Murphy, the Region 1-1A Tournament MVP, led Northeast Tennessee with his 3.8 steals per game while ranking fourth in assists (4.7). He scored 20.2 points with 1.2 blocks, 5.7 rebounds and 1.5 made 3-pointers a night while helping the Buccaneers win back-to-back region titles.
North Greene’s Jason Britton joined Murphy on the Class 1A team, after scoring 1,087 points his senior year and leading the Huskies to their third state tournament in four years. He averaged 29.4 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 3.0 steals while hitting 64.5% of his shots, 40% from 3-point range and 82% at the foul line. With 2,958 career points, Britton became Northeast Tennessee's all-time leading boys scorer this season.
Tennessee High’s Colin Brown was selected to the Class 3A team after averaging 19.5 points, 3.0 assists, 3.0 steals and 2.0 3s per game — not to mention his school-record 54 points in the region quarterfinals.
Greeneville’s Trey Thompson, a Mr. Basketball finalist, scored 22.8 points with 2.4 triples and grabbed 9.2 boards, as a sophomore.
Two Greene County seniors made the 2A team — one being 6-foot-9 Christian Derry. The Chuckey-Doak center led NET in rebounds (12.4) and blocks (4.8) and ranked second in points (23.1).
South Greene sharpshooter Cooper Kelley led NET in 3-pointers (4.0) and was fifth in points (21.0). The District 1-2A tournament MVP also averaged 5.1 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 0.5 blocks while hitting 81% of his free throws.
