The Huntland High School Lady Hornets beat the Cornersville Lady Bulldogs 8-5 at home Thursday for their ninth win of the season.
The Lady Hornets flipped the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth after falling behind early and pulled away in the sixth inning to secure their third straight win.
After two scoreless innings on both sides, the Lady Bulldogs broke the early tie by scoring four runs in the top of the third with three of those runs coming with two outs in the frame.
The Lady Hornets were able to quickly cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the third with Hadley Gardner hitting a two-run home run to left field to make it a 4-2 game early.
The score remained there until the bottom of the fifth when Gardner and Jocy May led off the frame with consecutive singles, and Blair Finchum brought both of them across home plate with a game-tying, two-run triple. Camerin Davis then hit into an RBI groundout to allow Finchum to race home as the Lady Hornets took the lead at 5-4.
The lead would be bolstered further in the bottom of the sixth as May hit a three-run home run over the right-field fence to bring Huntland’s advantage up to 8-4 going into the final inning.
The Lady Bulldogs were able to score one more run in the top of the seventh, but the Lady Hornets got the last out they needed from there as they won by three.
Bella Smith pitched a complete game for the Lady Hornets with four strikeouts, five hits, two walks and five runs allowed.
With the win, the Lady Hornets improved to 9-6 on the season.
They will next play Monday at home against Moore County High School in a first-round game for the District 9A tournament. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
