High school sports scores and highlights: Several teams punch tickets to Spring Fling

Day by day, the postseason continues to get heavier as teams across the region on both sides of the state line vie for trips to the state tournament - and on Thursday it was a race around to the finish.

TENNESSEE

At the end of the night, a pair of softball squads took home region titles and a pair of baseball teams punched their tickets to the Spring Fling of the spring sports state championship tournaments in Tennessee.

One day after Dobyns-Bennett softball set a date with the Sectional, Tennessee High softball took down David Crockett to win the 3A Region crown - set to host Gibbs on Saturday in the Sectional, with Crockett going on the road. In 1A, North Greene took down Cloudland for the title to play at home in the Sectional, as well. Cloudland will be on the road.

In baseball, Elizabethton and Science Hill each saw their seasons come to an end with losses in the Sectional round - leaving just two baseball squads left standing.

Greeneville took care of Union County in both games of Thursday's double-header to punch their ticket to state in Class 3A, while University High swept Greenback to go dancing in 1A.

On the soccer pitch, Dobyns-Bennett pulled the clean sweep of Science Hill for the AAA crown, beating the Toppers for the fourth time this season in a 2-1 affair. The Indians will host Bearden on Saturday, while Science Hill will head to Hardin Valley.

In AA, Greeneville knocked off David Crockett 3-1 to now host Austin East in the Sectional Saturday, with Crockett going on the road to Cocke County.

VIRGINIA

It was a night of the Falcons as Abingdon stormed through the entire Mountain 7 in four different sports on Thursday night.

Abingdon boys soccer took down Gate City on a Daniel Blackmon golden goal in the 3rd overtime period to claim the district crown, while girls soccer beat Central-Wise 2-1 to win the title, as well.

On the diamond, Falcons baseball beat Central-Wise 9-4 to advance to Friday's title game against John Battle - meanwhile Lady Falcons softball knocked off top-seed John Battle to play for the title game Friday.

On the diamond in the Southwest District, Lebanon beat Marion 8-2 to advance to Saturday's championship game - awaiting the winner of Virginia High and Richlands which will be played Friday morning.

In the Cumberland District softball, Eastside beat Rye Cove to claim the No. 1 seed in the tournament.
