Pirates split with Blue Devils

The performance of senior Haley Long has helped the Boaz varsity girls start 3-0 in Class 5A, Area 10 play during the 2013-14 season.

Boaz built a 10-point fourth-quarter lead and held on for a 41-39 win over Etowah in Class 5A, Area 10 basketball action Friday at the Boaz Multipurpose Facility.

Etowah led 16-12 after the first quarter and 20-15 at the half. Boaz held a 27-26 lead after three quarters.

Haley Long paced Boaz with 12 points. Anna Sanders followed with nine.

Bailee Padgett netted six, Chelsea Chamblee five, Baylee Grace Alldredge four and Callie Rogers and Morgan Smith two each.

Brooke Perry topped Etowah (5-2) with 15 points.

Boaz improved to 8-2 overall and 3-0 in area play. The Lady Pirates host Sardis on Thursday.

VARSITY BOYS

Etowah 52, Boaz 50

Courtland Harris hit a running layup with 1.5 seconds left to lift Etowah to a win over Boaz in Friday’s Class 5A, Area 10 matchup at the Boaz Multipurpose Facility.

Etowah led 15-12 at the end of the first quarter, only to see Boaz grab a 21-20 halftime lead.

The Blue Devils regained the lead 34-30 after three quarters.

Boaz tied the game at 50 with less than a minute remaining. Etowah held the ball as the clock ran down and Harris hit his game winner.

Austin Lee led Boaz with 15 points. Wesley Burns added 11 and Cameron Whitt 10.

Whitt cleared eight rebounds.

Blake Lemaster scored eight, Reagin Langley five and Douglas Howard one.

Jordan Powell led Etowah (8-1) with 14 while Harris added 11.

Boaz dropped to 1-7 overall and 0-3 in area play. The Pirates host Sardis on Thursday.
