1. De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) 10-0 (1)
Despite giving up 13 points to Ygnacio Valley of Concord in last week's 35-13 win to close the regular season, the Spartans still finished with just 45 points allowed in their 10 games. They should continue those kinds of numbers in the upcoming CIF North Coast Section Class 4A playoffs. De La Salle's first game is Friday at home vs. 7-3 Castro Valley. This should be the 20th straight season in which the Spartans have won 11 games or more under coach Bob Ladouceur.
2. Carroll (Southlake, Texas) 11-0 (2)
The defending state Class 5A-II champion extended its win streak to 27 games with a 55-14 pounding of Irving MacArthur to open the playoffs. Quarterback Chase Daniel accounted for 301 yards and four touchdowns,
including three by passing. Aaron Luna rushed for 112 yards and two TDs and scored on a pass reception. The Dragons take on Arlington Saturday.
3. Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey, N.J.) 8-0 (4)
In the Parochial Group IV playoffs, Prep earned the No. 2 seed and St. Peter's Prep is No. 3. However, the teams are ranked No. 1-2 in the state. They will
square off this week. Don Bosco was idle last week while St. Peter's eliminated Paramus Catholic. Don Bosco defeated St. Peter's in last year's playoffs.
4. North Penn (Lansdale, Pa.) 12-0 (5)
Adam Hearns was the star of the Knights' 42-21 sub-district victory over Pennridge. He completed seven of 11 passes for 146 yards and two touchdowns plus rushed for a score and returned an interception for a TD. Kevin Akins added 178 rushing yards and two touchdowns. North Penn takes on 10-0 record Interboro this week.
5. Independence (Charlotte, N.C.) 13-0 (7)
The Patriots continue to pile up one-sided victories and extended their state record win streak to 59 games with a 41-6 Class 4AA playoff victory over Hopewell. Independence exploded for 34 unanswered points in the
second half after leading by only 7-6 at halftime and falling behind 6-0 in the first quarter. Joe Cox completed 13 of 24 passes for 226 yards and two touchdowns. Independence tackles Providence in this week's quarterfinals.
6. Union (Tulsa, Okla.) 11-0 (6)
The defending state Class 6A champions opened the playoffs with a 35-7 win over Muskogee and extended their two-season win streak to 25 games.
7. Mission Viejo (Mission Viejo, Calif.) 10-0 (8)
Mark Sanchez continues to look like one of the top junior QBs in the state and shined with 12 completions in 12 attempts for 326 yards and four TDs in the Diablos' 42-0 win over Capistrano Valley of Mission
Viejo. The Diablos will start the CIF Southern Section Div. II playoffs on the road vs. Burroughs of Burbank instead of at home as a punishment for a ball violation in last year's playoffs.
8. Mountain View (Mesa, Ariz.) 11-0 (9)
The Toros extended their win streak to 25 games with a 46-3 pounding of South Mountain in the first round of the state Class 5A playoffs. Max Hall passed for 130 yards and a TD and scored on a 62-yard run. The defending state champion is host to Paradise Valley this week.
9. Carmel (Carmel, Ill.) 12-0 (10)
Quarterback Mark Vengoni passed for 142 yards and two touchdowns and rushed 12 times for 107 yards as the Corsairs pounded Rockford Boylan, 42-14, in the Class 6A quarterfinals. Carmel, which plays Minooka aturday, has outscored its three playoff foes by 139-29.
10. Northwestern (Miami, Fla.) 11-0 (13)
The Bulls, ranked No. 1 in Florida, opened the state Class 6A playoffs with a 34-7 rout of South lantation. Kevi Moyd rushed for 173 yards and a 35-yard score.
Quarterback Cedric Miller passed for three TDs -- all in the first half. Northwestern outgained the Paladins, 413-124, in yards. The Bulls tackle Sunrise Piper Friday.
11. Richmond County (Rockingham, N.C.) 13-0 (11)
Marcus Rush carried 21 times for 99 yards and landed two passes for 117 yards, including an 87-yard score, as the Raiders downed Charlotte Butler, 20-6, in the
state Class 4AA playoffs.
12. The Woodlands (The Woodlands, Texas) 11-0 (12)
Samson Taylor carried 28 times for 166 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winner with 5:52 left to play, in a 14-13 state Class 5A playoff win over
Jersey Village.
13. North Shore (Houston, Texas) 11-0 (17)
North Shore continues to pile up big numbers and opened the state Class 5A playoffs with a 52-0 rout of Clear Lake after leading 31-0 at halftime. Justin
McNeese rushed 14 times for 124 yards and three scores. Bobby Reid completed all seven passes for 205 yards, including three TDs to Tyrell Williams.
14. St. Joseph's Prep (Philadelphia, Pa.) 11-0 (14)
Danny Jones blazed his way to 251 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries as the Hawks routed LaSalle, 41-14, for their 34th straight victory. The Prep willface Cardinal O'Hara for the Catholic League title.
15. Cumberland Valley (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) 12-0 (15)
The Eagles' Dan Lawlor rushed for 163 yards and two touchdowns in a 31-4 District 3-AAAA championship game. Reading lost its all-state linebacker and top recruit, James Bryant, with an ankle injury on the first series.
16. Camden County (Kingsland, Ga.) 10-0 (21)
The Wildcats closed their second straight unbeaten regular season with a 19-0 blanking of Wayne County for their seventh season shutout. The Camden defense limited the Yellow Jackets to three first downs.
17. Blue Springs (Blue Springs, Mo.) 11-0 (23)
Stinson Dean completed 13 of 21 passes for 185 yards and rushed for 53 yards as the Wildcats defeated rival and defending champion Rockhurst for the second time this season, 24-7, in the Class 6 quarterfinals.
18. Millard North (Omaha, Neb.) 12-0 (18)
Jon Kimbrough scored two touchdowns as the Mustangs ousted 11-0 record North Platte, 21-7, in the state Class A semifinals. Earlier in the week, North blanked Omaha Westside, 34-0. North advances to take on 12-0 record Creighton Prep Friday in the title game.
19. East Grand Rapids (Grand Rapids, Mich.) 12-0 (19)
Junior Kevin Grady carried 19 times, 17 before halftime, for 189 yards and four touchdowns and also returned a punt 57 yards in a 62-13 Division 3 quarterfinal playoff victory over St. Johns. It was the Pioneers' 26th straight win.
20. Summerville (Summerville, S.C.) 12-0 (20)
Allen Smith, who missed a 42-yard field goal with 15 seconds left in regulation, converted a 27-yarder in overtime to decide a 24-21 state Class 4A-I playoff win over Ridge View. Alex Haynes rushed 11 times for
175 yards and a score. The Green Wave takes on Rock Hill Friday.
21. South Gwinnett (Snellville, Ga.) 10-0 (22)
Ryan Rickard passed for 217 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 53 yards as the Comets capped regular season play with a 42-14 win over Collins Hill to
claim the Class AAAAA-Region 8 title and top post-season seed. South entertains Marietta this weekend.
22. Mullen (Denver, Colo.) 11-0 (24)
Terrific play on special teams and on the edge by senior defensive end Jake Ragusa helped the Mustangs down defending Class 5A state champ Columbine, 14-6, in a state playoff quarterfinal. Offensively, Maurice
Greer was again the story with 26 carries for 130 yards and two TDs. Mullen plays Ponderosa of Colorado Springs (9-3) in this week's Class 5A semifinals.
23. Brookwood (Snellville, Ga.) 9-1 (26)
Chris Covington (118 yards) and Antonio Lamar (105 yards) combined for 223 rushing yards as the Broncos blanked Oconee County, 34-0, to close regular season play. Brookwood opens Class AAAAA playoffs this week vs. Harrison.
24. J. W. North (Riverside, Calif.) 10-0 (27)
A 41-14 triumph by the Huskies capped a regular season in which no opponent really came close to beating them, including perennial power Mater Dei. Josh Barnett scored four TDs to key the rout. J.W. North opens the CIF Southern Section Div. V playoffs at home Friday vs. Temecula Valley.
25. Elder (Cincinnati, Ohio) 12-1 (44)
The defending state Division 1 champion outlasted previous unbeaten city foe, Colerain, 24-23, in the state quarterfinals before 23,817 fans at Nippert Stadium. Bradley Glatthaar led Elder with 79 yards on 18 carries, but Colerain outgained the winners, 379-191. Elder, unbeaten vs. Ohio teams, tackles Dublin Scioto Saturday in semifinal play.
26. Parkview (Lilburn, Ga.) 9-1 (30)
Brad Lester ran for 200 yards and two touchdowns as the Panthers closed the regular season with a 31-0 blanking of Dacula. The three-time defending Class
AAAAA champions open the state playoffs this week vs. Campbell.
27. Chaparral (Scottsdale, Ariz.) 11-0 (31)
Arizona's No. 1 ranked Class 4A team opened the playoffs with a 76-0 blanking of Arcadia, a week after closing the regular season with a 72-14 rout of the same foe. Darren Mougey completed nine of 12 passes for 133 yards and three touchdowns. Moon Valley is up next for Chaparral.
28. DeMatha (Hyattsville, Md.) 11-0 (29)
The Stags will meet Gonzaga (D.C.) for the third straight year in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference title game. DeMatha downed Bishop O'Connell (Va.) by 31-7 last weekend while Gonzaga upset No. 2 seed Good Counsel (Md.), 28-21.
29. Hoover (Hoover, Ala.) 11-1 (33)
Quarterback John Parker Wilson completed 20 of 26 passes for 260 yards and three touchdowns as the Bucs blasted once-beaten Birmingham Minor, 38-3, in the Class 6A playoffs.
30. Ennis (Ennis, Texas) 11-0 (34)
Graham Harrell passed for six touchdowns to set a state season record and amassed 393 yards as the state's No. 1 ranked Class 4A team blanked
Midlothian, 62-0, in a playoff opener. Harrell has passed for 4,040 yards this season and has 160 career TD passes. Ennis meets Hallsville this weekend.
31. Warren Central (Indianapolis, Ind.) 11-2 (nr)
Warren Central ended Ben Davis' bid for a third straight state Class 5A title by ousting the Giants, 27-20, in the state quarterfinals. Ben Davis lost two season games, both to Warren Central, which also has the only victory over FAB 50 ranked Elder of Cincinnati, Ohio.
32. Madison County (Madison, Fla.) 10-0-1 (35)
Madison County opened the Class 2A state playoffs with a 19-13 road victory over Marianna. Madison County has to play all road playoff games because of a state penalty for a previous incident. Next up this weekend
is Wakulla, a 49-21 winner of Arnold. Madison County handed Wakulla its lone regular season loss.
33. St. Edward's (Lakewood, Ohio) 10-3 (nr)
Junior Joe Kleinsmith kicked a 34-yard field goal in overtime to give the Eagles a 13-10 upset victory over previous unbeaten, and FAB 50 ranked, Mentor in the state Division 1 quarterfinals. The Eagles play Toledo St. John Saturday in the semifinals.
34. Byrnes (Duncan, S.C.) 12-0 (37)
Rodricuz Williams rushed for a school-record 254 yards as the Rebels blasted South Florence, 52-35, in the first round of the Class AAAA-II playoffs.
35. South Panola (Batesville, Miss.) 12-0 (40)
Quarterback Derek Pegues rushed for three touchdowns and passed for another score as South Panola rocked Madison Central, 47-3 in state Class 5A playoffs. Junior Marcus Griffin rushed nine times for 122 yards and one TD. West Point up next for state's No. 1 ranked team.
36. Everett (Everett, Mass.) 8-0 (36)
Everett had no trouble remaining perfect while handling Malden, 44-14. Frank Nuzzo rushed for 105 yards and three touchdowns.
37. St. Bonaventure (Ventura, Calif.) 10-0 (38)
Bryan Stevens connected on 20 of 28 passes for 282 yards and three touchdowns as the Seraphs beat San Marcos of Santa Barbara, 45-21, for their 22nd straight win. St. Bonaventure plays Hawthorne in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Div. IV playoffs on Friday.
38. Hunter (Salt Lake City, Utah) 13-0 (41)
Going up against an unbeaten playoff foe proved to be no problem for the Wolverines, who used a 407-52 rushing yards advantage to race past Alta, 30-13. Hunter will now face Skyline of Salt Lake (11-2) in Friday's Class 5A state final at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Skyline, making its ninth straight appearance in the state finals, upset three-time champion Northridge of
Layton, 21-7. For Hunter, Tauni Vakapuna rushed for 176 yards and Matt Asiata piled up 215 yards.
39. Westlake (Westlake Village, Calif.) 10-0 (42)
If form holds, the Warriors will be 13-0 and will play 13-0 St. Bonaventure for the CIF Southern Section Div. IV championship on Dec. 13 at The Home Depot Center in Carson. Like St. Bonnie, Westlake also wrapped up a 10-0 regular season last week. Its score was 49-14 over
Moorpark. Jeff Rapoport rushed for 168 yards on just nine carries and scored three TDs. Rudy Carpenter added three TD passes.
40. Hamilton (Chandler, Ariz.) 10-1 (43)
Quarterback Travis Dixon opened the game with an 80-yard TD run and added a scoring pass as Hamilton blanked Corona del Sol, 41-0, in the state Class 5A playoffs. Daniel Griffiths kicked a 51-yard field goal.
41. Hampton (Hampton, Va.) 10-0 (50)
Hampton completed a perfect regular season and clinched the Crabbers' first district title since 1999 with a 41-7 victory over rival Bethel. The team's first foe in the district playoffs is a season rematch with defending state champion Phoebus.
42. Washington (Tulsa, Okla.) 11-0 (nr)
Oklahoma's top-ranked Class 5A team opened its playoff push with a 38-6 victory over Tulsa School of Science & Technology.
43. Lamar (Arlington, Texas) 11-0 (45)
Keith McConnell landed two TD passes and had 114 receiving yards as Lamar ousted Euless Trinity, 28-14, in a state Class 5A playoff game.
44. Maine South (Park Ridge, Ill.) 12-0 (nr)
Junior quarterback Sean Price, the Chicago metro area Player of the Year, completed 25 of 37 passes for 340 yards and six touchdowns in a 49-7 state Class 5A playoff win over New Trier, the second season win over New Trier.
45. D.C. Everest (Schofield, Wis.) 13-0 (nr)
Everett rocked previously-unbeaten Homestead, 35-7, in the state Division 1 semifinals. Everest will play Hartland Arrowhead in Friday's title game. Arrowhead upset previous FAB 50 member Oak Creek, 26-25, in the
other semifinal.
46. Lincoln County (Fayetteville, Tenn.) 12-0 (46)
The state's No.1 ranked Class 5A team eked out a 29-22 come-from-behind state playoff victory over Smyrna. Michael Edmiston passed for 268 yards and rushed 18 times for 145 yards and a score.
47. Kahuku (Kahuku, Hawaii) 11-0 (47)
The Red Raiders had the week off and will play Kauai (5-3) on Friday at Aloha Stadium in their first Division I state championship playoff game.
48. Bothell (Bothell, Wash.) 11-0 (nr)
Many in the state had ranked Bethel of Spanaway Lake in the No. 1 position in recent weeks, but we wanted to wait and see what happened between Bethel and Bothell. And now that Bothell has beaten Bethel (and
by 31-0), a stronger case can be made for Bothell. Tony Gardiner threw two TD passes for the winners and Bard Ward ran for 120 yards on 17 carries. Bothell has another unbeaten opponent to worry about in this
week's second round of the Class 4A playoffs with a matchup vs. 11-0 Olympia.
49. Mentor (Mentor, Ohio) 12-1 (3)
The Cardinals entered the game averaging 44 points but were outlasted by Lakewood St. Edward, 13-10, in overtime of the state Division 1 quarterfinals.
50. Colerain (Cincinnati, Ohio) 12-1 (25)
The Cardinals outgained defending state Division 1 champion Cincinnati Elder, 379-191 in yards, but bowed, 24-23, in a quarterfinal playoff game on a late
missed conversion kick.
