The Flagstaff High School boys golf team earned first place at the Continental Country Club golf course Tuesday during a nine-hole match hosted by Coconino High School.
In the process, Flagstaff’s Kyle Jacobsen shot a 37 to finish as co-medalist, tying a Mingus Union player for the low score. Jacobsen recorded his second of five state qualifiers in individual play.
Also for Flagstaff, Cole Lockwood and Matt Ryan both ended the day with 40, while Josh Lovett notched a 42.
Flagstaff sophomore Matt Arrollo played his first varsity-level match.
Eagles head coach Jim Barquin said he was impressed with Arrollo for his level of play in the qualifier.
Flagstaff as team scored a 159, which was not enough for a team state qualifier — the state qualifying score for a team at Continental is 154.
Barquin said the weather played a large role during the match, saying the wind picked up and caused the greens to play fast. The course was also starting to dry out. He said his team had to adapt to the firm conditions of the course compared to the previous wet conditions.
Coconino followed Flagstaff with a score of 166, while Mingus (177) earned third place and Page (188) finished fourth.
“We’re on pace to qualify as a team for state if we stay on the course we are on,” Barquin said about the progress of his team.
Flagstaff will play in its first tournament of the season Friday at Continental Country Club in which nine of the holes will be qualifiers. Those holes have not yet been selected.
VOLLEYBALL
FLAG HIGH 3, MONUMENT VALLEY 0
Flagstaff High School’s volleyball team played through soreness and fatigue to sweep Monument Valley on the road Tuesday.
Eagles head coach Beth Haglin said her team came out slow due to playing in the Coconino Classic tournament over the weekend but managed to earn the win with some good serve/receive play from Hailey Leffel, Courtney Leffel and Randy Powers. “They enabled us to attack with all three hitters,” Haglin said.
Flagstaff (3-1) edged the Mustangs in the first game 25-23, pulled away in the second game 25-18 and wrapped it up in the third, 27-25.
Hailey Leffel notched 19 digs while sister Courtney had 10 digs and two kills. Emma Rogers led the team with 23 assists while recording two kills and five digs. Powers provided 16 kills and Taylor Moody added three kills.
Haglin said the Mustangs had a large following but noted her group played well considering the hostile environment.
“Monument Valley had a huge crowd, which can be intimidating,” Haglin said.
The Eagles return home Thursday to host Tuba City at 6 p.m.
NPA 3, ASH FORK 0
Northland Prep Academy girls volleyball team recorded a road win Tuesday night in Ash Fork, blanking its scrappy competition 25-18, 25-22, 25-14.
Despite the sweep, NPA head coach Sheri Bain would like to see her team come out ready to play hard.
“The girls played harder in practice yesterday than they did at Ash Fork tonight,” Bain said. “They got behind and lost their focus and had to work really hard to get it back. We have to address that. You have to start quickly when you play tougher teams.”
Senior Hailey Settle had four aces in the win as did Scottie Manson, who also notched 10 kills. Hailey Phoenix and Michaela Nation totaled nine kills each.
Bain gave credit to Ash Fork, saying they are “a scrappy team. They worked hard for the points they got.”
NPA hosts Scottsdale for its next game at 6 p.m. Thursday.
GIRLS SOCCER
The Northland Prep Spartans defense allowed just one goal by Desert Christian in Tucson, but that goal was enough as NPA fell 1-0 Tuesday.
NPA co-head coach Anna Canning said the Spartans started the match strong and dominated the first half with passing and defense, but Desert Christian picked up steam in the second half. Desert Christian scored the game-winning goal in the last 10 minutes of the match.
“We played a defensive match and played really well,” Canning said. “They were coming at us hard and we tried a different formation at the end because we were down to 10 players.”
NPA keeper Karen Heppenthal let the one goal in but played “an excellent match,” according to Canning.
“Also, Riley Quigley and Allison Budwin played great defensively,” Canning added.
NPA struggled to get shots off despite controlling the game with passing.
Canning said Desert Christian was double- and even triple-teaming NPA attackers.
NPA’s next match is at 5 p.m. at Snowflake Monday.
