Officiating

I know this is beating a dead horse but this is pathetic. The kids deserve better than what they are getting. Their egos stand in the way of doing a good job. We fans deserve better as well. They are paid pretty well to officiate these games to not have to answer for the job they do. T$$AA should be ashamed allowing this to go on. But here you go, here's my $5, I want to watch these kids bust their butts so the "officials" can steal the show.

Please explain how high school basketball officials are paid "pretty well"?

High School (girls/boys) $85

JUCO (1 game) $135

Division II (1 game) $225

Low Division 1 (1 game) $900 or more

Other high school sports officials pay (all of which are much easier sports to officiate)

Football (1 game) $90

Baseball (1 game) $65 (2 games) $105

Volleyball (1 match) $65

In addition, basketball is the only sport that requires calls be made in a split-second.  The only other time an official has to make decision that quickly is calling balls/strikes.

Also consider that if an official has to drive very far to a game, they are probably spending $25-30 in gas.

Officials DO have to answer for to the TSSAA.  I know for a fact an entire crew in football got suspended 2 games for a variety of mistakes during a game this past season.  In addition, the white hat who tried to eject Ricky Bowers ended up losing his spot as white hat in a state championship game.

Good and bad refs, which most of the time do not affect outcomes.  Sad to say but most girls games are double digit margins of victory, very few come down to a play or two, or call or two).  There are also way too many parents/fans who WAY OVER COMPLAIN about officiating.  Many of whom do not understand the rules themselves.  Crazy when a crew calls 3 quarters well, and then a couple of calls are missed and everyone wants to yell at them and blame them.  It is a very hard job to call bball games.

On the other hand, I completely disagree that the Refs are held accountable.  At least not in Chattanooga area.  Just take the test, pay the fees and go call a game is about the process.  This is from actual GOOD REFS who hate the system and lack of accountability.

This year alone at the varsity level we have had the following occur 1) jump ball where ref set up players on the wrong side which resulted in confusion and a easy basket for one team (the stop clock for 5 minutes to talk about it, then say NO REDO and count the basket which was technically scored in the wrong goal), 2) clock was not started so REF blows the whistle with one team dribbling in for a wide open uncontested fast break basket, 3) and the very common blunder of allowing girls to jump on top of a player on the floor to tie them up with no foul called.  I can't wait to see what else happens this year...

I have one... Tuesday at the Boone SH game SH player shoots and is fouled, ball goes into the hoop. Ref says no foul was on the floor and then SH shot 2 free throws. How is that even possible? If it's in the floor should be ball out of bounds on the baseline, or if she is shooting the the play should have been an and 1. Some refs do a great jobs but it's the ones that are terrible ruin it for the good ones.

Has anyone seen the letter from Gene Meneese about chairs being brought on the floor during timeouts? The whole tone of the letter is ridiculous.

"There is a trend beginning where coaches are having chairs/stools placed on the court during time-outs just like a lot of colleges are doing.  We are still just high school."

What a smart aleck!

Our coach got a technical this year for "being out of the coaches box" because his pinky toe was on the sideline...literally! No exaggeration. He wasn't talking to the official or talking at all. The teams were transitioning from one end to the other and the coach was just standing there IN THE BOX. Whistle blows, everyone looks around, tech on the coach because his toe was on the line. Why don't we focus on calling the action in the game and worry less about where the coaches are standing and/or sitting? They put so much emphasis on being the fashion police and watching the coaches box but 90% of officials don't know the difference between a block/charge. There are some good refs but the vast majority of them are stealing money... not earning it. There is very little accountablity, if any. Two of my good friends are officials and they work hard at it. But they will also be the first to tell you that there are less than 20 other officials in the midstate that they like working with. The rest are so bad that it offends the good refs to have to work with the other clowns.

Just curious, was the team over the double bonus (10) fouls?

Officiating over the last couple of years has gotten worse. Most of the good older officials are having trouble keeping up with the speed of the game. I am seeing a lot of older officials who are continually out of position. You can't be fat and old and be a decent official.

Many of the younger officials are complete power tripping wanna be's. I have seen many in the last year or two refuse to talk to coaches at all. A lot of them are obviously not athletic, and I have seen way too many who call walks on anything that looks athletic, while not noticing things like the pivot foot, and the fact that many kids don't use one.

Still see officials who don't really understand simple rules like over/back, and the 3 second rule. Saw a 3 second call a week or so ago where a kid drove to the basket, shot, rebounded like 4 times. He got called for 3 seconds.....

As for being paid pretty well, well yeah they are. I don't see many people spending 25-30 in gas to drive, but if they do then ok Most make $125-$150 for a pair of games. Minus your theoretical $25 for gas and you come up with 75-100 for 3 hours worth of work. So $25-33/hour. Not bad, most people would take that.
