The John Allen era of Powell football begins in earnest today as spring drills open up on the banks of Beaver Creek.

Powell will travel to Rhea County for a scrimmage this Friday, and then will close spring practice by hosting McMinn County for a scrimmage next Friday (May 16).

Powell supporters are interested in seeing Coach Allen and his staff, all but 3 of whom are new staff members to Powell football, in action with the team.

HTV, make sure you have some refs for the McMinn scrimmage. You don't want to go up against those guys with no refs. Last time West scrimmaged them their was a brawl that started when McMinn players began kicking a West player that was on the ground on their sideline. Then, there was another skirmish afterward when the parents of a McMinn layer started mouthing off to a West player as he was putting his gear in the trailor. Every time OR plays McMinn it's cheap shot after cheap shot and that's with referees. I'm just sayin' fair warning.

Spring looking good in Powell country?

I had the opportunity to get out and watch spring practice yesterday.  So far so good.

Two thoughts:

1.  With Coach Allen and all but 3 of his assistants being new, this spring is a "get to know the personnel" time, so that is what a lot of this spring is about - seeing the players in pads for the first time and getting an idea of who fits where in their system.

2.  With the success of the Powell baseball team several key players are missing from spring drills, so it is an opportunity for some younger guys to get some reps.

I'm not going to be able to make it to Rhea County tomorrow night, but I will be at the scrimmage with McMinn County next Friday.  Looking forward to seeing tape from tomorrow and then the live scrimmage next week.

As people, I like both guys.  They are personable and seem to know their stuff.  Probably know more about the OC than I do the DC at this point, but I haven't been able to see much practice this week due to other commitments.  I'll see more next week.

Why is Middleton still at Powell? Is he playing next season since they have new coaches in football and basketball?

He's finishing the school year at Powell.  He is still zoned for Powell.  Where he ends up next fall is still up in the air, but I don't expect him back at Powell.

Wherever he ends up he will have to move in to the zone to be eligible according to TSSAA eligibility rules.
