I know that most of these Pre-season selections are mostly popularity contest. I'm a west Tennessee guy, more exactly, i'm a City of Memphis, west Tennessee guy. I know that these things have to be taken with a grain of salt. I also know that there are a lot of young men that are deserving.

That being said ... not a single player from that dominant Memphis East defense is listed. Also, the best WR/Ath in 5A football (according to 4 different recruiting services) Johnathon Jones (JJ) from Memphis Melrose isn't on this list. I can see missing on a Memphis East player being selected on the 5A All State Defense because if you aren't in Memphis and you haven't seen them play, you wouldn't know that it is a travesty not to select a player from that team's deffense. However, overlooking JJ is downright demeaning. Murphy has been doing this for years and yet I see where he thinks that the QB/WR duo at Campbell County should both be listed on the 5A All State team. I have to disagree with that selection. When you have a player to be offered by six (6) D-1 programs in the summer at a particular position and not another player in that position is even mentioned in the recruiting services in that classification, you have to make an informed decision and select the better player. JJ's the best WR 5A football has to offer in the state of Tennessee according to the recruiting services.

Some things are just blatently obvious. This is one of them.

Seems like Murphy Fair has some sort of bias.  What do you think that is?

All Murphy does is take the players from last year they were three qb make all state last year the other two graduated so he just took one on his preseason picks 3 Rbs made all state last year they were all juniors and they are all on this list that is why he only took one wr they take 4 wr on the all state team last year

I suspect that freebird is right and that MF is biased toward last year's numbers.  That would be relatively easy to check with the two receivers in question but I haven't done that.  Or I could be completely wrong.

Great to see Anderson County Maverick Matt Fox on there. He is deserving of the award as he led the state in rushing last year. Hard to argue his numbers. He continues to have a productive summer, and a big senior year. Congratulations to the AC program for having another player listed on this team.

Facts:

I personally don't think that MF has an axe to grind, nor do I think that he is geographcally biased. I agree with another poster on here who suggested that Murphy uses a different set of criteria when he selects his players for his pre-season all state team. I just don't agree with his selections for the reasons that I stated ... but that's why I prefaced my comments saying there are a lot of deserving young men out there and most of this stuff needs to be digested with a grain of salt.

I have no doubt that the QB/WR combo he selected had a very fine season last year and if you looked at their numbers, they are deserving. I would probably have selected JJ instead of the WR he selected. That's all. MF's list is still solid, and it's going to be nit picked to death by people from around the state who probably feel the same about some other deserving young man that they think should be on the list.

MF did do one thing I think we can all agree on ... he's got us talking about it and anticipating the up and coming season. That's the whole idea behind the pre-season lists in the first place.

Have fun with it!

How else can u make a preseason all state team if u don't use last year's numbers. Everybody can't be on the team fellas

I agree that everyone can't be on the list.

However, you may want to look at who is being recruited and by whom when you are making your selections. The object is to put together the team with the BEST players. The BEST, may not necessarily have the best numbers, but all things being equal, they may be heads and shoulders better then another player. Stats from the previous year alone may not be enough.

It's all relative to the observer.

I was wondering if the Melrose WR Duo from last year graduated. So I guess one is still Around... 2 Shelby Metro Players SMH LOL

    • Yea I agree I will say tho I was a big “ v “ fan if an  opening ever did happen I think it would’ve been good to see him have a shot coming from a power house like Oakland. I’m sure he’s learned a lot from Kevin.  I bet he would bring a really good offense scheme IMO But after all this I just dunno anymore.  Whatever happens with the rumors an such if it did come to and opening I think this messes it all up.  The board members dreams are slowly slipping away now. I haven’t lived there for awhile I just hear what I hear, but my question is would there be any good potential candidates?? That’s why I don’t understand why people want b s out so bad who else could do any better ?? IMO there’s nothing attractive about it? As I stated earlier I went to the last game last year and taking a leak in a porta Potty is pretty sad and still nothing being done they say ..
    • I have a sophomore that can do 177 (preferred) or 192. Sent you an email.
    • speaking of board members how can a man get arrested 12 days ago and still be head coaching a team in TC school system? looks like your right about the tc board members. I bet it would be different if they had a kid on the team
