YOU ARE WHAT YOUR RECORD SAYS YOU ARE

I think the verdict here is that if you're undefeated then you're undefeated. If you have losses then you have losses. Just because you have a better record doesn't mean that you're better than another team. These games aren't played on paper, we actually line up and play until there is one team left. Oakdale is mentioned a lot in this thread. The thing with them is that they're 5-0 and were on 2-3 at this point last year against the same schedule and they've avenged all 3 of those losses on the road. 2 of those 3 are district games and it was the 1st time in school history they've beat one of those teams and the first time they've beat the other team since the 80s. They weren't "scheduling wins" or they would've been 5-0 last year as well.

good post...they are 5-0 and of course, may not be better than another team...but, still 5-0

I think that the Oakdale vs. Rockwood game tells the tale. First...I'm not bashing Oakdale. I love the fact that they've broken out of the "automatic win" category, and the kids should be getting some well deserved attention from their community. However...at 5-0 against Rockwood with a loss on their record, this "you are what your record says you are" nonsense is exposed as completely false. Score is at 48-0 as I'm typing...not the score to be expected from two teams with one loss between them. Just as an undefeated team might not be as good as their record advertises them to be, a mediocre record doesn't mean that the team isn't pretty good.

    • The only thing that was said at half time of the 45-0 game was Coach Story, he said: "I know y'all have been out there a lot, but kick-off team, y'all need to get down there faster!" Then he and the other coaches proceeded to go into the coaches office and we all went nuts!  It was the only time I can ever remember coaches not saying anything at half time. Definitely a great memory!!!
    • Boyd could actually be a grade below what he is now, but his parents didn't see the need to "redshirt" him like the other city school down the road would have pushed for....

    • When Danny was a senior he was the quarterback on the 82 team and also the placeholder on extra points. At the end of the game Heritage scored a touchdown with very little time left and went ahead 9-0. On the following extra point Danny rose up and threw a perfect pass to one of his receivers which made it 11-0 and Heritage's first win against Maryville since the series started in 77. Maryville fans were highly ticked off because they felt like it was rubbing salt in the wound. The following year when both teams met again at Maryville  the Rebels ran away with the game and after the first couple of touchdowns they went for two points after each score for a pay back and the score was 45-0 at halftime. The following Monday Bob Gilbert the sports eiditor for the local paper bashed Maryville in an article called the Humilation of Teenagers and tore into Maryville even though he was a graduate of the school. Those were the good ole days when Heritage had decent teams and the rivalry between them and Maryville was a fun event to see.
