My most favorite OR team ever. And the only team I personally witnessed to win it all being I am only 35. Shawn Summers and the late great Richard Howard. Both went to play for UT. The loss to paducah was a heartbreaker. Their QB was Billy Jack Haskins who went on to star for the UK Wildcats in the 90s. Some other OR fan correct me if I am wrong I was just 13 at the time. I think we lost on a goal line stand by Paducah on a 2 pt conversion or a missed xp. Paducah used to be a powerhouse in KY and they have historically been a great team in KY. The QB Mike Underwood was a neighbor of mine and a good friend. The Central games especially the last one were two of the greatest games I've ever personally seen. An awesome team. They were like Alcoa is today. A smash mouth run it down your throat and made you like it lol Shawn Summers toss sweep right and left all.night.long.

Do you think the 1980 OR team was the best ever?

Well the 80 team finished ranked #3 in the nation that year and had 3 or 4 D1 recruits on it so if going by that yes the best. But its so hard to compare eras like that. Just different times and styles and players.

91 team finished #20 in the national polls that year. Emory Hale had 3 teams finish in the top 10 in the national polls in his time @ OR. '75, '79, and '80. Emory had a great run. Ran the old traditional veer offense. Nobody could figure it out in those days.

I think what Georgia Tech runs these days under Paul Johnson is pretty much the veer. If you have a shifty quarterback it can be effective.

Yes. Doug Martin was the QB that year. He went on to play for UK. He is now the HC for New Mexico St. He got hurt in college and never really played, unfortunately.

A great team for sure. These days are coming back though. Obviously I haven't been to Blankenship Field anytime recently, but based on what I've read in the KNS, those days are coming back to OR. It's not often that a coach can relive past glory, but JG looks to be headed in that direction.

A great team for sure. These days are coming back though. Obviously I haven't been to Blankenship Field anytime recently, but based on what I've read in the KNS, those days are coming back to OR. It's not often that a coach can relive past glory, but JG looks to be headed in that direction.

I'm not sure we can ever get back to those days. OR was just a different place in those days. A lot more kids were in the town and the town was just livelier as a whole, but I will always hold out hope. But, we may not have to get back to those days to be honest. If we can get close we will be fine because barring Maryville football around here just isn't as good as it was back then and it was much harder to get in the playoffs and advance back then because their were only 3 classes. Now it's more watered down and as I said the competition just isn't as formidable. Central was a powerhouse in those days and Halls was real good in those days, too. Clinton was even a lot better in those days. Much stiffer competition in those days in these parts.

He sure did. I remember that game well. He was a great one for Paducah.
