Its not like Smith County and Riverdale were loaded........... Rankin in fact only won 4 games his first season at Riverdale. There were alot of years that Riverdale overachieved and made it to the state championship game despite not being as good as some Riverdale teams. Rankin also built a powerhouse from decent talent but not good talent, did not have near the amount of D-1 players that you would associate with a big school power like Riverdale.

 

Alcoa was the first job that Rankin has taken where the team was loaded to win from the second he took the job. Prior to him taking the job at Riverdale, Oakland was considered the gold standard among football programs in the area. He is the all-time leader in wins for a reason, not because of good luck

I don't know anything about Smith Co other than the fact that they have had some good teams. However,I do know that he coached at Riverdale at a time when there was less schools taking away from the talent pool. Just look at what's happened since he left. Blackman,Siegel,Riverdale, Smyrna and Oakland all had great teams that went deep in the playoffs and Oakland and Smyrna won it all in some of those years. When Rankin took the job at Riverdale Oakland was the king of the hill and those other schools were either a non-factor or not even in existence. Is it just a coincidence that he left right when those other schools were emerging and Smyrna was a year away from back to back championships? I think not... Don't get me wrong I think he is a good coach. But more than that I think he was smart and really dang lucky. He was smart enough to recognize where it was easy to win and was lucky enough to get those opportunities. He was also smart enough to see the writing on the wall and realize it was about to get alot tougher to win in Murfreesboro. I think that's why he has been as successful as he has.

Ummmmm, Smith County was a DUMPSTER FIRE when he took it over and their long losing streak continued throughout his first year, but I guess it's just a coincidence that SC beat top-ranked Gordonsville in their opening game his second year and he took SC to the semifinals two years later.

I guess it's just coincidence that Riverdale suddenly improved to the powerhouse they were in his tenure there, and also that Riverdale slipped when he left. I guess it's coincidence that Rankin has won Alcoa half of their many championships and won MORE games in LESS time than the two coaches whose win totals he passed (Carlton Flatt and Ken Netherland).

Not trying to start an argument at all. Just beyond tired and bored with the BS a few keep bringing up to continue stirring the s*** pot.... In other words, we still to don't know anything, so how about we let it go until we do? Maybe focusing on football at hand is more productive than living in the past??? Pretty sure Shad's ready to do the same....
