Tri-County Seven Week #2

All our teams have a few games under their belts.  I have made a couple of changes to the rankings.

1. Elizabethton- (AA) (2-0)-  Beat Pigeon Forge by 28 and Science Hill by 15.  Stating the obvious, but this is a very good basketball team.  Keeping them focused, happy, healthy, and hungry without peaking too early may be the challenge.  Play in the Happy Valley Thanksgiving Tournament this week.

2. Happy Valley- (AA) (2-1)-  Beat West Greene and Sullivan North.  Lost to Grainger.  The Lady Warriors may be pretty good.  They are hosting their annual Thanksgiving Tournament this week.

3. Unicoi Co.- (AA) (1-3)-  Lost to Science Hill by 27, Cocke Co. by 6, and Madison, NC by 10.  The Lady Devils beat Crockett by 13.  Not a great start, but they will be a factor.

4. Hampton- (A) (1-0)-  Beat Crockett by 1. Coach Hazelwood's team is a bit of a mystery to me.  I know they have Alexus Grubbs and Kim Swearingen, but do not know much else.  Can the Bulldog faithful tell us about this team?

5. Cloudland- (A) (0-1)-  Coach Matt Birchfield's Lady Landers lost to Sullivan East by 28.  Kendall Mull and Faith Russell are two good players.  What else does Cloudland have?

6. Johnson County- (AA) (1-2)-  Lost to South Greene by 51 and Mitchell Co., NC by 1.  Beat Unaka by 10 to move up a spot.

7. Unaka- (A) (0-2)-  Lost to Cosby by 16 and Johnson County by 10.  Coach Kenneth Chambers has returned to Stoney Creek after a few years at Cloudland as an assistant.  It may take some rebuilding, but I look to see the Lady Rangers improving as the season moves along.

Going to be a very long season for a lot of area teams this year King.  Take Elizabethton out of the equation and the rest of the teams are average at best.  Happy Valley probably being the better of the bunch.  Don't see any of the Greene County teams being challenged in single A or Elizabethton being challenged in AA.  Johnson County may get the opportunity to be ranked the highest its been in many years.  The Bowers girl not playing for Hampton this year really sets them back some and not sure they can recover from that, so they'll have to play with youth like Cloudland and Unaka.  Probably going to see a lot of ugly basketball the first couple of months but with time maybe the youth will mature enough to be competitive with teams outside the conference.

Lady Dogs...OK gonna be VERY young. Played with 4 sophomores and 1 freshman for while in the first couple of games. 3 girls are gonna have to score a lot of points IMO. Kim Swearingen, Alexus Grubbs(soph) and Tatum Street(soph). All 3 started multiple games last year. Street had 17 against Chuckey Doak with Grubbs and Sweringen scoring about 8 each in a game they lost and did not play very well. That was about all the points they had but those 3 will have to produce. Madi Wear(jr) started some too last year when she came off her injury. She brings a lot of size(6'2) along with Megan Garland(soph) who is also 6'2 but is still a little raw but coming along well. Hope Bridgeman(soph) is probably the future point guard and shoots the ball well and handles the ball well she just needs some experience. Cheyanne Tuelle is freshman that has started both games so far and looks like she could be a good one. The Dogs strength is that they can go really big with 6'2, 6'2, 6'1 across the front line but they are a little short on outside shooting. Ball handing could also be an issue.

    • QUICK UPDATE -  First, I see a lot of wrestling names that I recognize on that GoFundMe.  THANK YOU so much for helping this family.   After the long surgery on Sunday morning to repair his neck, Jacob suffered a collapsed lung.  Sometimes this happens after long surgeries.  They had to put him on a ventilator to get his breathing back on track.  He came off the vent on Monday morning and they put a BIPAP on him to help control his breathing.  As of today, Thursday, the BIPAP came off and he is breathing well on his own.  He is working towards drinking a glass of water and hopefully eating some solid food at some point in the near future. Jacob can "feel" when someone touches his legs, but there is still no movement.  His parents are beginning to prepare for him to be moved to the Shepherd Center in the next few days.  He will be there in Atlanta for 30-45 days.  Im sure he will receive excellent treatment. Please continue to pray for healing for him and if you are so moved, please contribute to the gofundme link above to help in any way you can.  The go fund me is doing well, but this is going to be a very long road for these guys Im afraid.. Thanks again! Sells
