Region 6 5A: 2015 (9AAA & 12 AAA)

Well... 2014 season is complete and much change is ahead. Hillsboro is fresh off a state title appearance in 5A and Hendersonville an appearance just one year ago in 6A and one in 5A in 2013. Beech has has a couple recent championships in 5A as well in 2009 and 2012. We should see some tough competition and top notch players. Let's see how 2015 looks... 

 

Beech

2014 Record 6-6

Enrollment: 1275

Outlook/Key Players: Returns QB Ian Hefner and a trio of RBs Auston Van Zant, Alex Van Zant and Rodrick Nappier who may be the best player returning in Region 6 5A.

 

Cane Ridge

2014 Record 5-6

Enrollment: 1660

Outlook/Key Players: Many athletes at multiple postions. Need metro posters here.

 

Gallatin

2014 Record 7-4

Enrollment: 1495

Outlook/Key Players: Loses QB Julian Meador and WR Dedarius Redding to graduation but returns many skill positions including UT commit Dorian Banks, Jordan Mason and Dezmond Chambers. DL will be solid but much youth/limited experience on OL.

 

Glencliff

2014 Record 1-9

Enrollment: 1433

Outlook/Key Players: Need metro posters here.

 

Hendersonville

2014 Record: 10-2

Enrollment: 1510

Outlook/Key Players: Loses QB Jeremias Elston, RB Cameron Turner and DB Braden Schwerdt to graduation but returns RB Terrell Carter and RB/DB Jack Towe. Many returning players to fill spots from a team with depth this past year.

 

Hillsboro

2014 Record: 14-1

Enrollment: 1188

Outlook/Key Players: Loses QB Michael Hughes, RB/WR Vincent Perry, DE Kyle Phillps and MLB Jonathan Young to graduation. Many key positions to fill will some returning lineman and young/limited experience skill players.

 

Hunters Lane

2014 Record: 3-7

Enrollment: 1640

Outlook/Key Players: Need metro posters here.

 

Station Camp

2014 Record: 5-6

Enrollment: 1537

Outlook/Key Players: Loses QB Kyle Anderton, RB/LB Tra Malone, RB Josh Gilley and WR Jace Alford to graduation and much youth needed to step up including WR/RB Marcus Duvault and RB Sirtavious Perry. DT Peyton Anderton may be best returning lineman in Region 6.

I believe 1-3 can be easily switched and 4-6 can be flipped as well.

Hillsboro has 4 starters returning on the OLine & their #1 TE, #1 WR, & 2 RB's who have started off & on all year returning. Have some holes to fill on Defense but the cupboard is far from bare. I've been told if they find a QB they can be very similar to their team this year.

If what you say is correct about Hillsboro, they sound to be a favorite is well. I know Hendersonville will be a contender as long as they can transition in a new quarterback who can effectively and efficiently run their offense.

Hville by group:

OL- 2 starters return plus a 3rd who started 2 games

TE- could have a star in 6-6 JR to be in Jordan Amis with 2 solid backups behind him

Offensive skill players- Towe and Carter return at RB, Carter averaged 9 yds a carry and Towe scored 11 TD's. Carter may move back to half back to allow 225 lb junior to be Frankie Small to move in at FB. Small was the JV team star RB and had success in limited varsity action. Also look for soph Anthony Hughes to be in the mix. He sat out this year with a knee but should be good to go for spring ball. Big question is at QB where 4 are competing for the job (Ferguson, Oschlager, Ernst, and Richard)

DL- very talented and deep with Cull, Richardson, Banks, Dove, Brown, Amis and others

LB- Should be okay here with Tate, Harris, Kincaid and others

DB- Towe and Carter are returning starters along with some guys who played a lot (Head, W Schwerdt, Burton, Carver)

 

Overall- biggest question marks will be at QB and O line and somewhat in the secondary

Strengths- Skill players and D line

A lot of work need to be done in the weight room, must get bigger and stronger.

Losing 9 seniors on defense alone could cause major issues. Not too mention a 3 year starter at QB. Hillsboro will take a step back next year. Still good but not near what they were this year.

I wish i was as optimistic about Beech as others on here.  True, they return a ton of talent in the backfield.  The spot that still needs to see a lot of improvement is QB.  Two players with experience at that position return in Sr Hafner and SO Smith, but both were still learning to play the position last year.  Top returning OL is SR Jowan Garrett (6'4" 250 Tackle) and JR Jacob Phillips (6'3" 225, TE, offers from Ole Miss and UT). No receivers return that have had much success, because no receivers had any success last year.  Hopefully some of the talent in the backfield can pick up the slack at receiver.  Top returners on D are Jacob Phillips at LB and Ian Hafner at S.  The major weaknesses of last year's D, DL and CB, will have to be developed.  Lots of ???  

 

I don't mean to be Mr. Negative, but I have to confess I paid extra attention to the news story about the young man who was arrested at a Hunter's Lane basketball game last week with a loaded Rueger in his waistband.  Sadly, whether we want to admit it or not, there will be a whole new dynamic added to our Friday nights.

That small pipeline of talent would seem to have issues now that Hunters Lane is in the same region. Predictions starting now have the consistency butter. So many trials/ tribulations to go through before we have an idea. I will say Spring will be entertaining and things will start to shape up then. The only vague prediction I will flaunt is that Hillsboro will be nowhere near the 14-1 team they were this past season. Besides that teams will still have to deal with quitters, injuries, transfers, coaching changes, etc.

That's a shame but I am not surprised. I have heard bad stories about some of the kids that go there. But let me say before somebody gets all defensive, every school has bad kids.
