FRANKLIN – In an epic TSSAA D-II state duals finals which came down to the final two matches, defending champion Baylor relied on its Murderers’ Row, composed of three state champions, earlier in the match to edge Father Ryan, 32-30 for the state championship here Saturday night at the Williamson County Ag Expo Center.

Trailing, 15-7 after six matches, Baylor then gained a major decision from Blake Sutherland (160) and consecutive pins from Cayman Seagraves (170), Cole Holloway (182) and Ryan Parker (195) to lead 29-15 with four matches remaining. Sutherland, Holloway and Parker are past state champs.

Baylor, extended its lead to 32-15 with a decision win by Jon Schmissrauter (220), before the Purple Irish from Nashville mounted a comeback but fell short of a win by three points.

Needing 18 points in the final three matches (three, 6-point pins) for the team win, Ryan picked up a fall at 285 from Jeremy Darvin to trail 32-31, but could only gain a technical fall (worth five points) at 106 from Christian Simpson and a major decision (worth four points) at 113 from Ray Eason.

* Bonus Points the Difference: With each team winning seven matches each, bonus points was the difference as Baylor led 11-9. Thus Ryan had to win the match outright as Baylor would win according to the tie breaker system if the match had ended in a tie at 32-32.

“The difference in the match came down to bonus points and we picked up pins where we expected to get them and had guys keep from giving up bonus points in some crucial matches,†said Baylor head coach Ben Nelson.

Father Ryan coach Pat Simpson said before the match that his team needed to win eight matches and the Purple Irish came up one win and three bonus points short.

“Our senior heavyweight has only wrestled for three weeks, was pinned by the Baylor wrestler a couple of weeks ago and, of course, won a huge match for us tonight with a head throw to give us new life and chance to win,†said Simpson.

“After Jeremy’s win Christian and Ray battled hard for pins but were not able to get them.â€
