RonMexico3
I sure hope goals 11 thru 17 were scored from mid field. If not Notre Dame will have some awful karma coming their way later this year.
tarp
I agree Ron! If Bledsoe team like last years', it's basically a rec coed team. It is a district game for Signal, ND and CCS but we didn't push it last year. Let a defense guy score who had never scored a varsity goal, but was mandated it had to be a header. This is another clear example that soccer needs a mercy rule like football or softball have in place.
RonMexico3
Notre Dame should be ashamed.

saw4ND
Notre Dame has been shout out two straight games.....HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA The boards are dead, so I'll bite, it is obviously going to be an obsession with Ron..... If you think ND getting shut out the last two games has something to do with Karma, well then you got problems. ND has been shut out like five times this year, and it isn’t because of Karma, it’s because they are not playing very good soccer and their offense is pretty much non-existent. They lost their last two games 3-0 to Baylor and McCallie, and it was not because our coach deserved some type of payback. It was because they are both much better than ND is right now. As for the 17-0 score against Bledsoe, ND could have easily put 30 in the net if they wanted to, and so could other teams in our District like Signal and CCS, that also have to play Blesoe. Here is a serious question: if you are the coach of a team that is totally outmatched, which would you rather have your players do? 1. Chase the ball around for 60 minutes with almost no chance of gaining possession, or 2. Just play the game to the best of their ability against the other team’s weakest players? Personally I would pick scenario 2, since I would be trying to develop my players, and the margin of loss is meaningless with regards to development. The only thing a weaker team gets out of scenario 1 (i.e., keep away) is a good workout. At least in scenario 2 they actually get to touch the ball and chances to execute. I have seen all forms of burning the clock and I think the game of keep away is the most humiliating for the poor kid(s) who has to go through the fruitless motions of constantly trying to pressure the ball, when he knows darn well that if he ever does get the ball, he will be too exhausted to do anything with it. As for the “only score on a header†thing, that quite often just becomes a big joke as the stronger team starts goofing around trying to come up with creative ways to do it, which can also be humiliating for the other team. All in all, I don’t think it is that big of deal. Crappy things happen in life, and kids need to learn how to handle adversity. If losing a soccer game 17-0 is the worst thing that happen to you in high school, then I would say you are living a great life. If your kid gets all bent out of shape when his team gets slaughtered, then you need to figure out a way to help him get over that problem. Actually I think most kids are resilient and get over it pretty fast, it’s the parents that take it way too seriously. And yes, Tennessee needs to implement a mercy rule, badly!!

I was just trying to get people stirred up a little. I thought your original post was quite humorous. I also realize that it is an ND fan that usually starts the "running up the score" thread each season (cough, cough, Champ). I don't think I have ever chimed in before on the topic, because I just don't see what the big deal is about lopsided scores.

saw4ND
Have you ever been on the 0 side of a 17-0 loss? I was on some pretty lousy sports teams, so I am sure I experienced a similar beating somewhere in my youth, but I didn't commit it to memory. My son was on the 0 side of many double-digit beatings in his early days of playing club soccer. Don't know if he lost 17-0, I usually quit counting at about 8-0. My daughter lost her first basketball game in 5th grade 40-2 and the other team still had the full-court press on in the second half. All we could do was laugh about it. Three years later she beat that team. I don't care what anybody says, there is no perfect way to burn 60+ minutes in a soccer game when the difference in the two teams is as vast as it was last Tuesday at ND. It is just my opinion that playing keep away for for an entire half (or more) is more humiliating than a very lopsided final score, and keep away does absolutely nothing to help the weaker team improve. CoachLogan74
I'm not sure how you can be affiliated with a faith based school and be completely okay with a merciless beating like a 17-0 soccer score. There should NEVER be a score that high, whether be mercy rule or a coach having some class about himself/herself. When a team pulls these kinds of shenanigans, or Hardin Valley last night, it's obvious that either 1) the coach has no control over his players or 2) the coach has ZERO class. This is HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS. I'm the last person you'll ever hear wanting a coach to take it easy on a team of EQUAL CALIBER but there's also something to be said of a team showing mercy on a team who can't defend themselves. Isn't sports supposed to teach us lessons about life? So how about we look at it from the other side? Are you suggesting that you want your children to see someone who can't defend themselves, say the "nerdy kid" getting picked on all the way to homeless man who's begging for change and not show that person mercy... Should our children look at that person and say "oh well, life is tough"? You can come back and tell me that it's not the same but why are sports supposed to teach us lessons about life but only the ones that are convenient? A coach who allows a team to beat down a team who is noticeably inferior should be removed from his position because that man or woman obviously has no intention of teaching our children proper life lessons, which is their true job. I don't know much about Notre Dame but I know Hardin Valley well and I expect more from Coach McLean than this. Absolutely disgusting acts. MountainTroll
In general, I support the idea of putting your worst, most inexperienced team in and let them go all out. If even your worst are whipping the other team, there's not much you can do in some sports. I suppose in soccer, if both team were agreeable, you could treat it like an intra-squad, practice scrimmage, where your better players were helping/coaching the not so good players. But, whatever.
