Mr. Goose......still another couple of months away before the teams hit the court full time.  I'm as interested as anyone about how things are going to shake out.  Who do you think is the front runner going into the season?  I'm sure there are several teams that are in the mix, but lead me into your insight first and I will give you my take.

My front runner right now is Coalfield. Though they lose Layne, they return a lot of guard power along with Foster and Berry down low. They aren't too far ahead though. I didn't see Oneida or Jellico any this summer, though I imagine Oneida will be rather good. Oakdale may lose Fred Snow this year, because he took a job with the Central Office and a law in the school system states you can't work there and coach (I think).

I have it:

1. Coalfield- Good, balanced team. Depth is an issue

2. Oneida- Returns size & good guards (I think)

3. Wartburg- Good, balanced team. Still have Olivia Hamby. Melton is sneaky good in the post, don't think she was used enough last year.

4. Oakdale- Surprise team IMO. Loses two starters, but Everett & Coffey are capable scorers. Davidson (5'8") will be returning from an injury that sidelined her most of last season. Calling it now, Kaylee Headen will be the surprise star of the team. She can PLAY

5. OS- Looked human again in summer after 10 straight years of dominance. NEVER doubt a Michelle Christopher team though

6. Sunbright- Has a good core, but the supporting cast will hurt. Stephens was hurt this summer, so I didn't see their whole team.

7. Jellico- Didn't have much last year, but should be improved with this coaching staff having another year under the belt

Well.....IMO the district champion will end up being either Coalfield or Oneida, but unless someone is hiding a real jewel the other teams will have to play well to knock both of them off in the season.  I'm going way out on the limb here, but I expect Oneida to steadily get better and better as the season goes on.  They have the goods to win the district if some of the pups make good strides like they did over the summer.  Wartburg is a solid #3 and I have no idea if Oakdale can hold off OS because Christopher throws so much at you.  Like to see Sunbright or Jellico stir the pot but don't sense that they are going to make much of a splash.

Oneida - Best individual player in district (Newport) and good rising players (Dishman and Bertram)

Coalfield - Bench strength could hamper solid line up

Wartburg - Will fight you for wins,,,,,players play hard most nights

OS - unless Lady Eagles take it from them

Oakdale - Respect, like wins, are earned

Sunbright - Still needing some upgrades to compete

Jellico - who knows.....?  still a mystery

Coalfield has the most complete starting 5 in the district, but the lack of firepower behind them can hurt. Of their starting 5, Berry (5'11") is their only true size (and she's more of a finesse player). Their lack of huge players won't hurt them as bad as it should, as the district as a whole is leaning on the small side this year.

Coalfield's depth is NOT all bad,  plus they will  have a freshman that will be contributing by Christmas that may give them a spark to be a  real GOOD team. Also, watchout for the Sunbright Tigers to finish in the top tier  this year  with their  new coach.

who's the freshman? I saw the mid school team (CF) last couple years quite a few times. Pretty weak... I doubt any contribute for a couple years. Who did I miss? Transfer?

Not saying their bench is bad, but they lack size and scoring ability. They are solid role players

Their bench is unproven. Right now that's the weakness of the team. I think the district comes down to Coalfield and Oneida, I'd give the Indians the edge right now but that could change. Edited by TheMan2015

    • HVA is a dump and will never be good at football. It's a baseball school. Look at the types of homes being built and families moving in. Not football families. People will move in and look at the school and choose to play for another program. This issue has been snow balling for a decade now
    • Also no shot at an indoor facility it took ya'll almost a decade just to turf blankenship
    • You will not be able to replace Dozier he was a stud and wasted for years. Heyward started strong and then fell of but he will be missed still Rembert could fly and was also underused. Not being replaced. Track has started to close the gap with football. It does not help that the current AD is just stealing money(collecting his check) while the assistant AD is a XC/Track guy who always hated football. Current AD is too worried about not hurting anyone's feelings to do anything at all. Heck he is gotta be 70 plus and looks like a fool wearing kid shoes
    • Will Trez remain 2A after the influx of another 2A school?
    • As I said somewhere earlier in the thread, the original plans had no outdoor athletic facilities being part of the campus.  The original plan was for HVA to use facilities at nearby schools.  Very late in the process they came up with a plan and found budget to have minimal facilities and crammed them in to space that never was intended for athletic facilities.
