MLB,

Is the same true for college football?  They have a playoff system.

Apples and bananas.

In the NCAA FBS division, poll position is a part of the formula that dictates what 4 teams get in to the college football playoff.

Not so in high school football.

Polls are meaningless at all levels! Personally never pay much mind to them. The only time they matter is at the end of the year. Not where you start but where you finish. JMO

I'm going to have to disagree with the "at all levels" portion of your statement. I agree, in principle with that assessment, as it pertains to high school football in Tennessee. The region record determines seeding and all of that is done on the field. The poll is just for discussion purposes.

However, the polls matter a great deal in major D-1 college football. It's influence permeates the entire system. Marquee match-ups on prime-time television are based upon these polls ... and the polls start before the season even begins. Prime-time television games directly affect marketing and TV pay-outs to the institutions that participate in that particular prime-time game. Therefore ... polls can directly affect the bottom line of all of the schools involved. Polls directly and indirectly affect recruiting because the teams listed in the polls are constantly talked about ad nauseam  on sports radio talk shows, tv sports talk shows, etal.

Polls directly affect who gets into the NCAA playoff at the end of the year to determine the national champion. So ... they matter and they are meaningful in that regard. Debate is intense as to who should be placed where in a poll at any given point in the season ... but they matter a great deal in the NCAA. They matter in the Beginning of the year MOST of all, because a deserving team may NOT get a shot in the current system just because the polls started them out too low at the beginning of the season, and therefore, it affects where you land in the poll at the end of the season. They DO NOT ALWAYS work themselves out. As in most cases every year. They matter, and they matter all year long ... ESPECIALLY at the beginning of the season.

The HS polls are worthless because the 8-12 sports writers that do the voting have mostly NOT even seen a HS game until the playoffs.

That's why most of us laugh at them.  For a prime example was when there were only 5 classes.  They constantly had DB as number 1, until they CHOKED in either the first or second game of the playoffs.  Then most of the voting writers were in East Tn and teams from there were heavily favored.  Teams like Maryville in 4A then really DID deserve to be number 1.  Except for Germantown in west Tn was virtually ignored in 5A then.
