How can TSSAA justify NOT HAVING 4 Classes in Basketball?

With each new class comes increased expenses. If 3 classes barely break even it is highly unlikely that adding a 4th will suddenly make profit. Have to balance supply/demand.

In football, the demand is high. The other sports are nowhere even close. After Basketball breaks even, every other sport loses money. Why do you think colleges separate their sports as revenue and non-revenue?

I am not saying I agree with the monetary stand the TSSAA takes, but I do understand the economics of it.

Please allow me to jump in here as the outsider. I respect your words here and there must be some validity to your assumption, but I don't see how more tournaments would not generate more money for TSSAA. Think about this: All of the good teams play in Christmas tournaments or preseason events.... Why? Because the host school makes money to assist in funding their season. At the risk of losing everyone's respect, I will go a step further and say that ALL of the AAU teams help fund their expenses by hosting tournaments. I would think that as a school team is winning, the fans would get behind them and 4, 5 or 6 state tournaments/ classifications would be a slam dunk financially for TSSAA. Where am I wrong here? I'm ready to be corrected.

The assumption is in the line "I would think that as a school team is winning, the fans would get behind them." True it SHOULD be that way. However you obviously have not been to the state tournament lately. Half the teams have 100 or so people in the stands.

As I said, it is PURELY an economic stand. They post the financials each year from the  state championships in all sports. Footballl is  the only one that makes money each year. The board recommended they go back to 5 classes next year for football in D1. They ignored it. They are going to max out that cash cow.

Football is 3 days rent on the  TN Tech field.  In basketball you currently have 10 days and would obviously have to expand that even more for 4 classes. 2 days in D2 at Allen. 8 days for both girls and boys in Murphy.  Each day Murphy Center costs money. Allen Arena costs money. Security, gate workers, cost money. Referees. Advertising. printing programs, shirts etc.

As a coach, I would love to see 4 classes, but as a realist I know it is not going happen.

It is what it is.

AAU tournaments charge each team a fee to play. That way their expenses are covered beforehand. Then gate and concessions are gravy. Do you want to pay to play in the TSSAA tournament? Doubt it

Christmas tournaments and the like rely HEAVILY on volunteer workers.

I see your points and admit some I haven't thought about. It would seem that there is pretty good revenue generated through the district and region tourneys in the % sent to TSSAA who had zero invested in those events hosted by local schools? I bet that $ is not shown in the report you mentioned?

It's the TSSAA's fault basketball doesn't make money! It's set up horribly! Other surrounding states with more classes make way more money! Alabama made 2 million dollars from basketball last year with half our population (with 6 classes). Now, some genius tell me we're more of a football state than them...lol

The bottom line is basketball does not make money. Adding a 4th class would only raise expenses. They are not going to lose money. Sad but true.

We have 9 classes in football next year because playoff gates make A LOT of money.

You made a excellent point right, I really think it shouldn't be any coaches on the board based on they gone vote how they feel not for everyone else.

BTW- I noticed that Fulton stayed at the very top of 2A in classification numbers. How many think Jody Wright would have changed his vote for more classes if they would have moved to a small 3A instead?

Bigchief, pardon me for butting in here but that is crap. No offense, but TSSAA is making money on basketball. Maybe not at the State Tournament but they are making money on everything else.

You could still have six classes and have a quality state tournament- just reduce it to the Final 4 instead of the Final 8. Alabama does that and they have great crowds at the Birmingham Civic Center. It is a lot bigger than the Murphy Center. I am not saying it is full but they have great crowds.

But then you eliminate 4 teams from each class from "going to state", which defeats the whole participation medal mentality that has taken over high school sports anyway.  That is the real reason for having classes in the first place and the absolute reason that Division 2 was formed. "So and so can do this and go to state and I can't. It is just not fair". Wah wah wah

Sad but true.

    • Yea I agree I will say tho I was a big “ v “ fan if an  opening ever did happen I think it would’ve been good to see him have a shot coming from a power house like Oakland. I’m sure he’s learned a lot from Kevin.  I bet he would bring a really good offense scheme IMO But after all this I just dunno anymore.  Whatever happens with the rumors an such if it did come to and opening I think this messes it all up.  The board members dreams are slowly slipping away now. I haven’t lived there for awhile I just hear what I hear, but my question is would there be any good potential candidates?? That’s why I don’t understand why people want b s out so bad who else could do any better ?? IMO there’s nothing attractive about it? As I stated earlier I went to the last game last year and taking a leak in a porta Potty is pretty sad and still nothing being done they say ..

    • speaking of board members how can a man get arrested 12 days ago and still be head coaching a team in TC school system? looks like your right about the tc board members. I bet it would be different if they had a kid on the team
