Sportswriters across the state need your input about players in this classification. Please keep in mind: Negative comments do not impress voters. Positive comments about your choices may have an impact.

The Mr. and Miss Basketball Awards will be presented to the top girls and boys in five classifications of the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association at the state basketball championships in March.

This group is to include three finalists for Miss Basketball and three for Mr. Basketball in each classification. The winners of the coveted award are to receive the distinguished Mr. and Miss Basketball trophy with the other finalists being presented plaques.

The awards will be presented to the top girls and boys in five classifications of the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association on the floor of Murphy Center on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University on Tuesday, March 7 at 7:00 p.m. A reception for the finalists and their families will be held prior to the awards presentation.

Any player at any of our member schools is eligible to receive votes, and I would encourage you to take a moment and give careful consideration to any player with whom you are familiar and who you think deserving of the award.

These votes are a nominating process only. A selection committee that will include representatives from each area of the state will meet to vote on the finalists and winner of the Mr. and Miss Basketball Award for each classification. You may nominate up to three players in each classification for the awards. It is not necessary to nominate three players in every category, but that is your option. Also, please take into account the statewide aspect of this award as you consider your nominations.

In order for your ballot to be counted in the selection process, it must be submitted no later than noon on FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 3.

Taylor Lamb- junior, South Greene

Kara Meadows- senior, Clarkrange

Chelsea Perry- senior, Middleton

I know I'm probably saying the obvious but I look for Taylor Lamb to be back on the list this year. Even though she didn't win last year... as a sophomore... she proved she was the best player at the state tournament last year leading her team to a state championship and being the state MVP. She's a great player who can shoot from the high post at will and is very hard to stop down low.

Kara Meadows is having a great year after coming back after sitting out last year due to injury. The senior has committed to MTSU. Very very hard to stop in the post with her size. Not only that but if you leave her open outside she can drain a three if needed. She led her team to the state championship game her sophomore year but came home with silver.

Chelsea Perry is having a great season this year. She will be heading to play her colliegate career at UT-Martin. Perry wipes the boards clean on the defensive and offensive end of the court. She has taken on some big roles after helping lead her team to a state championship in 2015. She was also named the state MVP that year.

When it comes to candidates for Ms. Basketball in Class A, you must consider Brynne Lytle from Trinity Christian.  The multi sport star has signed to play college ball at CBU.  Through 21 games, Lytle is averaging over 20 points per game on 48% shooting from the field.  She also averages over 33% from 3pt land and is nailing free throws at a 77%+ clip.  She also has over 80 steals and 80 assists to date while only committing just over 2 turnovers per game as her teams primary ball handler.  Brynne Lytle has lead her team, so far this season, to four victories over teams who reached the TSSAA final four in both Class A and AA last season.  Those victories were against Middleton twice, Gibson County on the road, and a win this week against 2016 AA semi finalist Martin Westview.  She is also the all time leading scorer at TCA with over 2000 points  Brynne Lytle of TCA would be an outstanding choice for Ms. Basketball in Class A.

Taylor Lamb- South Greene

Kara Meadows- Clarkrange

Chelsea Perry- Middleton

I have been to the state tournament for several years now and each year it seems like there are new amazing players to watch for. Here are my thoughts for the candidates this year:

Taylor Lamb (South Greene)- Lamb is a junior post with a deadly fake to get her defenders in the air and allows her to drive down the lane. I also made note from the season before last that she had added the ability to knock down jumpers very efficiently. She is averaging 13.2 PPG and shooting at a 51% clip. Some may think it is a low PPG but having seen South Greene play these past two years at the tournament, scoring is of equality for them, and other players get involved. She is the reigning tournament MVP and last year showed why she is my pick for the winner of Miss Basketball. She averaged 26.6 PPG and 10.6 RPG at the state tournament. She even went 10/10 from the free throw line in their game against Community. She takes over when she has to and is the leader for this team. South Greene is ranked 1st in the AP poll and has a record of 21-4 and has a strength rate of 2nd and a schedule rank of 10th. It is clear the wins are hard earned. I have noticed their losses are to current AP ranked teams such as Class AA sixth ranked Gatlinburg-Pittman, Class AAA sixth ranked Oak Ridge and eighth ranked Morristown West.

Kara Meadows (Clarkrange)- Meadows is a paint controller who is very hard, nearly unstoppable down low. She missed last season due to tearing her ACL, but that has not slowed her down from coming out strong for her senior season. She has had huge games this season, having some 30+ point games. Clarkrange does a spectacular job at getting Meadows the ball and letting her go to work. She can also step out and knock down a three. The team has had some solid wins this year, one recent being against AP Class A third ranked Pickett County where Kara had 31 of her team's 66 points. Her sophomore year was also a good year and she has greatly improved since then. With that being said Clarkrange has a strength rank of 11th and a schedule rank of 21st. Their record is 19-6. I have been to several of their games this year, including the ones they lost and it has been proven one cannot do it alone, no matter the stats.

Chelsea Perry (Middleton)- Perry is a tall, lanky player who swats shots and gobbles down rebounds. She has led Middleton to a state championship in 2015 over Meadows and Clarkrange, and was the tournament MVP. This year she averages 14.5 PPG and shoots at 50% from the field. She is averaging a double double so far with 12.4 RPG as well. Middleton has a strength rank of 26th and a schedule rank of 61st. They have kept it close with other Class A schools such as a solid Trinity Christian, but they have came up short in the end. In a very strong district, Perry is still finding great success within herself. Although with her success someone else needs to step it up. Perry is having to do much work to keep them in it. Warren is their leading scorer at 17.8 PPG but outside of scoring Perry is carrying them. Middleton's record stands at 12-6. Look for them to be back at the glass house this year.

These three are clear cut nominees and I would include two more on the list to make a top 5 list of candidates.

Courtney Pritchett from Pickett County- Jr. Averaging 21 ppg. in the TSSAA state tournament the last two years (as a freshman and sophomore against both years State Champions). Her numbers won't line up point for point with some of the others, but she does it all. Leads a 1 loss team in points and rebounds, and has not played in very many 4th quarters this year. A big game player in the true sense of the word.

The other one I would throw in there is Ali Golden from Huntland. She's a sniper and leading a team that very well could make a state tournament run as well. I don't have all her stats but would bet they will line up with the best in the state.

Brynne Lytle has to be the choice over anybody else out of West TN. Averaging over 20 pts per game, close to 4 steals & 4 assists per game. Scored over 2000 career points. Played big in wins over Middleton, Gibson Co & Westview

Great player that proved me wrong a few nights ago, but I don't think those stats will be enough to get her in the running.

My vote is Taylor Lamb (South Greene)

Ali Golden's stats: 23.4 Points per game, 4.2 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 3 steals.  As of now 2,325 career points,  3.93 GPA.  Has led her team to a 21-3 record and a top ten ranking in the ap poll.
