2017 Class AAA West Regional Boys' BB Tourney Breakdown (Regions 7 & 8)

Ok ... I've given this some thought because it's that time of year. Trying to figure out who will represent the Memphis Area in the state tournament. I think it is a general consensus that East will be there. The million dollar questions is ... who will be the other team?

The State playoffs pair up neighboring Regions to play against each other in order to determine what teams will be able to compete for the state championship in their particular classification. There are eight (8) regions throughout the state with the eastern most region being number one (1) and the western most region being number eight (8). Each region is comprised of two (2) districts. Therefore, Region 7 is made up of Districts 13 & 14. Region 8 is comprised of Districts 15 & 16. The schools that come from the City of Memphis mostly belong to Districts 15, & 16. The one school that resides in the City of Memphis that is not in either of those two districts is Cordova, which is in District 14. I know most who frequent this forum and read the posts that pertain to Memphis area schools already know what I just stated above. This explanation is given for those who may read this and don't know.

Since I like braketology I've done the following:

I printed off the 2017 Class AAA West Regional Boys' Basketball Tournament bracket from the TSSAA website. Then I went to the CoachT rankings pages to see the standings in each district. The links are below.

Region 7:

District 13 : 1) Brighton [14-10], 2) Hardin Co. [15-5], 3) Dyer Co. [14-8], 4) Munford [6-16]

District 14: 1) Cordova [19-5], 2) Arlington, 3) Bartlett [14-13], 4) Bolton [5-14]

Region 8:

District 15: 1) Southwind [24-5], 2) Ridgeway [22-6], 3) Collierville [14-8], 4) Houston [15-10]

District 16: 1) East [23-3], 2) Whitehaven [18-6], 3) Central [16-8], 4) Melrose [12-14]

Using this information I filled out my brackets. The brackets will eventually get filled out at the TSSAA website when we get closer to those dates and after all of the preceding games have been playedI came away with the following:

1st Round (Regional Quarterfinals)

Region 7 (between Districts 13 & 14):

4) Bolton at 1) Brighton / 3) Dyer Co. at 2) Arlington

4) Munford at 1) Cordova / 3) Bartlett at 2) Hardin Co.

Region 8 (between Districts 15 & 16):

4) Melrose at Southwind / 3) Collierville at 2) Whitehaven

4) Houston at 1) East / 3) Central at 2) Ridgeway

My 1st round predictions based upon these pairings are as follows:

Region 7: 1) Brighton / 2) Arlington

                 1) Cordova / 3) Bartlett

Region 8: 1) Southwind / 2) Whitehaven

                 1) East / 2) Ridgeway

2nd Round (Regional Semifinals)

My 2nd Round predictions based upon the pairings are as follows:

Region 7: 2) Arlington / 1) Cordova

Region 8: 1) Southwind / 1) East

3rd Round (Regional Finals)

My 3rd Round predictions based upon the pairings are as follows:

Region 7: Winner - Cordova, Runner-up - Arlington

Region 8: Winner - East, Runner-up - Southwind

Sectionals ... The Sectionals are played to see who qualifies to play in the state. The pairings are comprised of the Winner of Region 7 plays the Runner-up of Region 8, and Vice Versa ... as follows:

4th Round (Sectionals)

R8RU) Southwind at R7W) Cordova

R7RU) Arlington at R8RU) East

My state qualifiers based upon the pairings are as follows:

Southwind and East

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That's my stab at it. If I do it again tomorrow I might have Cordova beating Southwind in the Sectionals (That IS a homegame for Cordova). I might have Whitehaven beat Southwind in the Regional Semifinals. Who knows.

Great analysis. The Southwind East game should be a good one this weekend, hopefully.

I don't know about all of that. Like I said, I might change my mind on a couple of games before it gets real. LOL.

I have a question for you. Will the games this Saturday have any effect on seeding for the Regional Quarterfinals?

Another Question ... How is it that Cordova was selected to play this Saturday over Southwind?

Oh wow I automatically assumed it was Southwind. Cordova was kind of snubbed last year by Gtown maybe it’s a makeup game. I always thought the city championship was just a region 8 thing but as you said Cordova is in the city. And the games don’t have any effect on regional seeding, this weekend is nevertheless just bragging rights. Bragging rights which some think is a curse lol bc if you look back there are teams that win the city championship and don’t make it to state, such as last year’s Gtown.

Cordova was selected over Southwind for the same reason that Germantown was selected over Cordova last year.

Cordova vs East is who the SCIAA thinks everyone wants to see. (I'd rather see SW vs East.)

I think Bolton can beat Brighton because of Bolton's post players. They're very physical but Bolton will have a hard time doing anything with Gatlin. This is a toss up in my mind

Bartlett can beat Cordova on any given night.

The DC vs Arlington winner will be determined by which Arlington team shows up. They've had some games where they've looked really bad.

Anyone in the SCIAA can play in the county championship.

Yes, it can be a curse. We didn't want to play East in the county, we would have much rather of had them in the region for a first time match-up.

The SCIAA set up the game based upon who they THOUGHT everyone wanted to see? You are kidding me ... right? Of course you are.

I think that SW and East would be a better game as well. I have to admit though ... Region 7 looks like a cakewalk for Cordova. I don't see them losing to anybody else in Region 7. Region 8 however ... murder's row with a bullet to the brain!

Great analysis! Bolton, Bartlett and Cordova all beat Brighton this season. Arlington didn't have a game against Brighton. I truly believe it's going to be a battle regardless of who we play. All the teams are talented and well coached in my opinion. If we play our best basketball it will still be a tough task but I like our chances better when my team has been switched on me before jump ball. lol

Why do you think I'm kidding?

Cordova was clearly the team that East should've played last year according to their tie break rules. Everyone knew it, we knew it at G-town. Then we got a call saying it was G-town and East for the county.

The SCIAA exists for what? To make money. Why do we need another governing body that forces you to play in a worthless jamboree and takes 15% of your gate?

Cordova can lose to anyone on any night because if you don't turn it over they have a hard time scoring. Arlington beat them by 17 a few weeks ago.

Stop the Tyler circus show and you got a chance lol. I dont really see him sticking around by himself next year at cordova. They're losing Blake to graduation and Brown to age restriction.

    • Shopping? His family is loaded and he's 6'6 I'm pretty sure he could start anywhere in upper East TN,So no need to shop. Word is Witten got caught trying to work him out on campus and some 7 on 7 while playing athletics for Sullivan East. Word got around pretty quick and Someone turned them into TSSAA.
    • Quick update on Jacob -  Jacob celebrated his 16th birthday at Vanderbilt on Tuesday and has been in decent spirits.  His sense of humor has begun to show as he was visited by many friends.  He is swallowing a lot better now and has eaten some of his favorites (Chik-Fil-A and Five Guys).   He is getting prepared to head to Atlanta to the Shepherd Center first thing tomorrow morning.  His family has been waiting on insurance approval. In case you dont know the Shepherd Center it a world class facility and supposedly one of the best in the country for spinal injury rehab.  Praying for perfect results there. Considering the circumstances, Jacob is in decent spirits.  He has some reflexive movement in his legs which I think is probably a very positive sign.  Don't read too much into that just yet as there is no telling what the real prognosis is... just hopeful that is good thing.  I am really just happy that it seems like he has a punchers chance of getting something back.  He is a strong young man and very determined so I think he will fight as hard as he can in physical therapy while down in Atlanta. More than one of you has asked me about an address to send donations.  I know GoFundMe isn't for everyone.  If you want to go that route, you can make a check to "Blackman Wrestling Club" and we will pass anything received directly to the Kinderdines.   Jacob Kinderdine c/o Blackman Wrestling 4836 Trevino Court Murfreesboro, TN  37128 Also, want to thank everyone who has donated so far.  Jacobs dad will take a month off work and stay in Atlanta with him.  They need to learn how to take care of him and do home therapy work..... and surely Jacob will be glad his dad can be there.  All that could not happen without you all.  Depending on what happens, they will probably end up doing some home remodeling in order to accommodate Jacob at their home.  Thanks again. Here's a pic I lifted from Facebook of Jacob on Oxy talking to his Uncle.  LOL
