History of Nashville Football - Question

Crazebear, you the man. If no problem, tell me about Maplewood - circa late 70's. I'm thinking Coach Grammar and E.J. Junior, which was followed a few years later by that Al Young, Thomas Goodlow team. I remember going to Maplewood and it being packed beyond belief. Those were the days when the newspapers and Nashville fans actually supported their neighborhood schools. Then the man closed Goodlettsville, Joelton, Madison, Bellevue, Donelson, West, East, Pearl, Cohn, North, Central. But I ramble. What do you know about Tarbox?

Maplewood had the goods back in the 70's. If I remember correctly (if not coach763 & shadow needs to give me some of their medicine), almost all of Coach Elrod's assistants went on to become head coaches themselves in Metro, Phil Grammer, Doug Mullican, and lest we not forget "Mama" Johnson (basketball)who is still going strong on football sidelines across metro today!! Yes the atmosphere was great back in the day and so were the players, coaches, and fans!

My biggest memory of those Maplewood teams is BIG (6'8" 310) Ronald Hale. He was surprisingly agile for a guy is size. Earnest Cecil was also a stud on that same team. Last I heard he was a metro policeman. I believe Coach Elrod arrived in 1973 after an 8-2 season at North with Jesse Mathers. he was the head coach at Donelson in '69 and '70. Isn't that right Coach763? :D:D

Scrappy, Donelson, Two Rivers and Cameron all closed after 1971 and were consolidated into McGavock for the fall of '71. Each became a junior high and still operate that way. Litton also closed in 1971. Madison, Dupont, Goodlettsville and East closed after 1986. Hunters Lane was opened in the fall of '86 and took the GHS, Madison and the Old Hickory half of Dupont. East students went to Stratford and Maplewood. Cohn and Pearl High schools were consolidated into Pearl-Cohn after 1982. North and Joelton were joined after 1978 to make Whites Creek. As far as Tarbox, I would have to do a little research on that one.

I know this is a football board but you guy's seem to know your stuff about nashville football so i thought i'd ask?

i'm looking for info on hs players who were drafted from the state of TN, specifically Nashville from the first draft in 1964 thru 1995. any help would be greatly appreciated. and by the way i went to a whale of a clinic bowl when gallatin played maplewood (al young/goodlow) in 78 i think. i think gallatin won on a two point conversion 14-13.

Ronald Hale, as big as he was, was a giant teddy bear in school. On the field he was a monster! Earnest Cecil is a detective for Metro Police. Preston Brown was the running back and was fast! The clinic bowl game with gallatin in 78 was a great game. The game between Maplewood and Oak Ridge in 74 or 75 at MTSU was the coldest game I have ever been to. Probably the most famous Maplewood player was E.J. Junior (Alabama and Miami Dolphins). He was a stud to watch. Jbmtpb, that may be a tall order and i'm sure we would leave someone out. E.J. was drafted by Miami, Shelton Quarles and Robert Davis (Whites Creek)were drafted by Tampa Bay, Jeff Gooch (Overton) went to Tampa Bay, help me out guys :D

    • Who are the keepers in your opinion?
    • Well I believe they got class of 2024* Blake Heckmann  And class of 2023* Cal Grubbs mixed up in with class of 2023 Army DL commit Caleb Graham whom played both sides of the play.
