  1. Here are a few more Alcoa High players for the pre-2000 list (there are plenty more I have missed): Gary Hart (Vanderbilt) David Davis (Tennessee State, Pittsburgh Steelers, Green Bay Packers) Tim George (Carson Newman, Cincinnati Bengals) David Greer (Georgia Tech) Ned Lidvall (Kentucky) Mark Love (Tennessee) Barry Lail Sam Love Tommy Wimbley Terry Whitted (small college in Georgia) Andre Earls Mitch Love (Appalachian State) Richard Mitchell (MTSU) Chad Smith (MTSU) Kevin Jackson (TTU) - quarterback of 1989 AA state champions and uncle of Randall Cobb Jamie Henry (walk on at Tennessee) Tyris Gilmore (Mississippi State) Korey Conner (MTSU)
  2. I would lean toward the 2009 team as the best ever, primarily because of its defense. The 2009 team started several very good seniors at linebacker and in the secondary. Plus, the 2009 defensive line had both Tyler Robinson and Darrell Warren. Good passing teams (in particular Maryville and CAK) exploited the 2010 Alcoa secondary. On the other hand, the 2010 team was more explosive and better balanced on offense than the 2009 team. Austin Tallant played quarterback for most of the 2009 season with a broken hand, and Alcoa leaned heavily on Jaron Toney to carry the offense. The 2010 offense could pound you with the power running of Tallant, Warren, and Taharin Tyson or score on one play by getting the ball into the hands of Vee Hambrick or Steven Isom. I still think the 1989 team had the best collection of skill players of any Alcoa team. Its line play was underrated but was not nearly as physical as that of the 2009 and 2010 teams. Prior to the arrival of Rankin, Alcoa generally was beaten at the line of scrimmage by Maryville almost every year. That hasn't been the case in recent years. The 2000 team should get a lot of credit for going undefeated. It wasn't overall as talented as the 2004 and 2005 teams, for instance, but it did manage to go 15-0. In summary, my top four are the four Alcoa teams that went through the regular season and playoffs undefeated: 2009 2010 1989 2000
  3. The only school whose nickname and colors I remember that hasn't already been identified is the Knoxville East Mountaineers - colors were blue and gray. I should know the particulars about Austin High and Lake City High, but I'm having a brain cramp.
  4. End of 1st Quarter Webb 14 St. George's 0
  5. Unfortunately, that's not even close to the longest run on sentence. See the example below spawned by gokarns09 in April!!! Call it dumb say what you want I know for a fact that money changed hands several times, maybe a young guy but, I do know this, it doesn't matter who cheats coaches admin or others are willing to cheat to get the upper hand in highschool sports maybe they shouldn't be allowed to be involved with us young people, whats dumb is you guys that want to say you know something didnt happen and you don't go there didn't play there or hang with current players, I just posted the truth cause my friend as taken alot of crap and he was just guided by ADULTS that so call have kids best interest at heart, ya as long as they give something in return, grace should line up all the kids they give money to and see how many of them don't play sports, same thing at karns, what you guys dont understand is khs coaches are so desperate to win they would do anything all it would take is tssaa to go in question the team they would find out whats up, one of my buds could have went to hva this year the coaches went to his house and told his grandpa they would make sure he got to school everyday that one of the coaches would pick him up if needed, my point is punish all the schools that break the rules, its winners or losers because khs as paid a big prices over the years our supermidget team was loaded with talent 6 years ago we had guys go to aloca, webb, catholic, farrgt, bearden, grace, central, west anywhere but karns one of the guys that went to west lived less then a mile from khs, just think if tssaa got all the recuriting schools and held the admin and coaches accountable khs would probably be able to win a few.
  6. Just to muddy the water a little more, here are a couple of computer rankings of Alcoa's and Greeneville's regular season opponents. I want to say up front that these rankings in NO WAY indicate the relative strengths of the Alcoa and Greeneville teams or should be used to predict which team might win if they played head to head. Let me say that I'm kind of skeptical about the absolute validity of the computer polls, but they are a rough indicator of the relative strengths of the teams across the state. The two systems used are the Ken Massey and Sonny Moore computer rankings. All teams that participate in TSSAA football are ranked from strongest to weakest regardless of classification, with the ranking of 1 indicating the best team in the entire state. Both teams finished 10-0 against their schedules. Greeneville Opponents Sullivan South ********** Massey 72 Moore 43 Jefferson County ******* Massey 107 Moore 91 Tennessee High ******** Massey 125 Moore 101 Elizabethton *********** Massey 152 Moore 136 Claiborne ************* Massey 208 Moore 251 West Greene ********** Massey 226 Moore 247 South Greene ********** Massey 247 Moore 237 Chuckey-Doak ******** Massey 254 Moore 284 Grainger ************* Massey 292 Moore 296 Cumberland Gap ****** Massey 296 Moore 286 Alcoa Opponents Maryville ************ Massey 7 Moore 1 CAK *************** Massey 39 Moore 37 Loudon ************* Massey 79 Moore 90 Howard ************ Massey 87 Moore 98 Fulton ************** Massey 98 Moore 105 Scott County ******** Massey 131 Moore 125 Kingston *********** Massey 141 Moore 133 Stone Memorial ***** Massey 229 Moore 215 McMinn Central **** Massey 316 Moore 270 Middlesboro, Ky Not Ranked Neither team played a juggernaut of a schedule this year, but at least according to these two computer rankings, Alcoa's schedule appeared to be somewhat tougher. According to both Massey and Moore, 6 out of 10 of Greeneville's opponents were ranked 200th in the state or worse. Massey's rankings say that Greeneville beat only 1 of the state's top 100 teams. Moore says they beat 2. According to Massey, Alcoa beat 5 of the top 100 teams in the state. Moore says they beat 4. What all this means - probably very little. Just thought I'd add it to the conversation.
  7. Since we are straying from the original topic, I would like to point out that the Friendsville Falcons beat the 1959 Alcoa Boys Basketball state champions in a regular season game. Does that mean Friendsville has a claim to being #1?
  8. Congratulations to Alcoa High Alumnus Richie Marsh on getting the Wildcats to the playoffs in his first year as head coach. As the fans at Alcoa and Clinton already know (and as Sweetwater fans now know), he is one of the up-and-coming young head coaches in East Tennessee.
  9. You are absolutely correct about the Kingston band. They are by far the best high school marching band I have seen this year. Kudos to their director and band members.
  10. I interacted quite a bit with Earl Nall in his previous life, when he was an Information Technology guru in Oak Ridge. In fact, his steadfast dedication to the Perl programming language was an important factor in my project's decision to develop a major application in Perl that is still in use today (14 years later). He is a class act, and he has shown great dedication to TSSAA over the years. I followed the Prep Performance Ratings closely over the years. They were both informative and fun to argue with. As crawdad correctly stated, by playoff time, the Rating's point differentials were spot on.
  11. Turns out that there are at least two Kentucky teams weaker than Middlesboro: Middlesboro 13 Letcher County Central 9 And, Letcher County Central had won its first game the week before.
  12. I think my band uniform was retired when I graduated, but it probably was due to the odor, not because I had distinguished the uniform in any way.
  13. This was absolutely a great game. I'm showing my age, but it reminds me of one of the many college football games billed as Game of the Century, the Thanksgiving Day 1971 game between #1 Nebraska and #2 Oklahoma. That game also seesawed back and forth from start to finish and was filled with great offensive plays, with Nebraska finally winning, ironically by the same score as tonight's game - 35-31. Those two teams won their bowl games easily and finished #1 and #2. It is very possible that both Alcoa and Maryville will bring home championship trophies this year. Both showed championship character tonight and played at a consistently high level throughout the game. One turnover between the two teams in a game filled with such tension! Amazing!
  14. Apparently, Karns is not the only rebuilding football program to return to its TRUE colors. From Thursday's Middlesboro (Ky) Daily News...... “One of the the first things I think people will notice when they come in is that we have gone back to the true gold and black of Middlesboro,†Middlesboro Schools Superintendent Dr. Rita Cook said. “They are going to see that we have paved around the field. All the seats have been pressure washed and brightened up, we’ve done extensive painting in and out. There will be new turf on the sidelines. I think people will be very pleased with what they see at the stadium this year.â€
