  2. Jim, Sorry for being so late on this. Below are the 5AA brackets that I was able to derive from the Cleveland Daily Banner: Feb 17th 6:00pm Sequoyah Girls(#5) vs Sweetwater Girls(#4) Feb 17th 7:30pm Sequoyah Boys(#4) vs Meigs Co Boys(#5) Feb 18th 6:00pm McMinn Central Girls(#1) vs winner of 4/5 Feb 18th 7:30pm Polk County Girls(#2) vs Meigs Co Girls(#3) Feb 22nd 6:00pm McMinn Central Boys(#1) vs winner of 4/5 Feb 22nd 7:30pm Sweetwater Boys(#2) vs Polk Co Boys(#3) Feb 23rd 6:00pm Girls Consolation game Feb 23rd 7:30pm Girls Championship game Feb 24th 6:00pm Boys Consolation game Feb 24th 7:30pm Boys Championship game Note: While the 1st/2nd round match-ups are correct, the article was a little fuzzy on the consolation and championship dates/times
  3. Sequoyah Football is broadcast at: http://www.wrkq.net This is the site for WRKQ 1250 AM in Madisonville, TN
  4. I have heard that he applied for the girls varsity job at Sequoyah. Why would he leave this program for another program that has struggled nearly as much? He appears to have helped improve things at Dekalb with his 10-44 record in two years. This is quite an improvement over the 3-75 record for the 3 years before he came. What were some of the things he did to get the program heading back in the right direction?

  6. Congrats Tiffany! Did Taylor Neal Play? Do you have the scores for the girls and boys games?
  7. Here is where the teams stood going into the last week last year. I would expect something similar for the 2008-2009 season. Central and Brainerd holding the 1 and 2 spots. Polk, Tyner, Tellico, and Sweetwater fighting for the middle spots. Sequoyah, Meigs, and Boyd will be fighting each other to stay out of the play-in game. Girls District 5AA Feb 8th 2008 ---------------------------------- McMinn Cen(06) 15-0 Brainerd(18) 12-3 Polk County(22) 9-5 Chat Tyner(52) 9-6 Tellico(43) 8-7 Sweetwater(42) 7-7 Boyd Buch(77) 4-12 Meigs Co (78) 3-12 Sequoyah (99) 0-15 (Coacht Rank) (02/08//08)

  9. Since there is a discussion going on about using the "Z" plan for basketball, then I would suggest that they try the "Z" plan with a holiday tourney over the last half of December. The six classes that the "Z" plan implements would make it much easier to run a state holiday tourney in 3 weekends, since there would only be 50-60 teams in each of the classifications.
  10. Dear Coacht: Your blog has stirred up some old discussions from my 40 years of living in Indiana. I have lived in Tennessee for the last 10 years, and I have generally like the 3 class Tennessee format for basketball based on the geography and number of teams. But for the sake of this discussion, then lets start from scratch with my proposal(s). Lets work toward one eventual state champion at the end of the season, but lets have a holiday state tournament divided into 4 classes during the last half of December. This would become a compromise for the smaller schools who will have a better opportunity to advance in their own classification. For the end of season tournament: (Played over 4 weekends) 16 Super Regionals with 16-20 teams in each regional. This is where Indiana went wrong. Prior to implementing a multi-class tournament, Indiana had what they called were ???Sectionals??? that preceded the ???Regional???. But the Sectional had the same 5-8 teams every year. So there were many cases where one school could dominate the Sectional for years. I think the record was 29 years straight. My suggestion (for both Indiana and Tennessee) would be not go to a multi-class state championship format, but shuffle the teams that feed each regional. So each regional would have 4 initial sites and no team could play on their home floor. This would be single elimination, and winning teams would advance to the Super Regional finals at a pre-determined site. 4 Sub-state sites with the ???Sweet Sixteen??? teams remaining. State Tournament with ???Final Four??? Lets use last years calendar to layout some dates: Thu March 6th: Play-in games for sub-regional sites with 5-6 teams Fri March 7th: 4 teams ??“ winners advance to Saturday Sat March 8th: Sub-regional Championship Fri March 14th: 4 sub-regional teams Sat March 15th: Super Regional Championship Fri March 21st: Sub-state semi-finals Sat March 22nd: Sub-State Championship Fri March 28th: State semi-finals Sat March 29th: State Championship Note: Both girls and boys could be played on the same dates if state will allow 4 games at a site in one day. For the Holiday Class Tournament: Pool of teams will be divided into 4 classifications played over 3 weekends. Each class will then be divided into 8 regions with 8-12 teams. Lets use last years calendar to layout some dates: Tue December 11th: Play-in games for regions with 9-12 teams Fri December 14th: 4 teams each at 2 different sites Sat December 15th: Sub-region Champions Tue December 18th: Region Championship Fri December 21st: Sub-State finals (Sweet Sixteen) Sat December 22nd: Sub-State Championship Fri December 28th: State finals Sat December 29th: Class state champion Note: Schools can still schedule their local holiday tournaments. Their will be a total of 16 teams playing in the state finals who will gladly skip the holiday tournament for a chance to win a state championship title.
  11. July 22nd Monroe County Advocate & Democrat newspaper states that Eric Baird is the new boys varsity basketball coach at Sequoyah. It says that he is an East Tennessee native who has been coaching in Pensacola, FL the last few years. Anyone have any other information on Eric Baird?
  12. Here are some names of players who didn't make it but should at least be honorable mention: Madison Lee, McMinn Central Hanna West, Sweetwater Hanna Powers, Tellico Nikki Mynatt, Boyd Buchanan Based on their play in D5AA games these should have probably ranked higher than Latisha Smith or Krista Bowman. Krista is a much better player than the way she played in D5AA games, so I can understand why she made the all district team. Latisha would still deserve nothing less than honorable mention.
