  1. When and where was Dick Butkus coaching in the pros? Know he did the XFL thing in early 2000's with Chicago.
  2. So the father was not a certified teacher at MJ, but the kids can go to the school and live out of zone? Not blaming the dad, I would take advantage of whatever the powers that be in Wilson Co. let me get away with all in the name of winning a few more football or basketball games. My question would be does the janitor get the same privileges? Does the lunch lady? No. Yes I get it that Wilson Co. is open zoning but only if the school is below capacity which MJ is not. And you have to at least live in the county, remember it is our property taxes that pay for a big chunk of schools. It is amazing how many kids Mj has gotten in their school in the past few years that do not live in their zone, and all of them are athletes. No band kids, no FFA kids, If you call MJ and tell them you have a kid in the Walter J. Baird middle school band who wants to play in MJ band but you live in Lebanon zone they tell you that you have to move, but if you have a kid who is a good basketball (girls and boys), football, or baseball/softball player they suddenly have room for you. I get it that a good athletic program is good for the overall health of a school, but what about those kids who have worked their way through middle school and played jv and now as a junior or senior you are getting replaced by some kid who does not even live in your school zone? Something is wrong about that, we are putting way too much emphasis on sports and it has gotten out of hand. This is an extracurricular activity we are talking about.
  3. just to let everyone know Troy was the coach from start of the school until 2013-ish, then we had the great Tyler Brown for 2 years "hate that we lost him" (don't really know how to type sarcasm), then Coach Carney who has left to take job at Mt. Pleasant. Carney did a good job with the hand he was dealt. Good kids, just not good basketball players. Not their fault, just no development at the lower levels. Even when Bond was there and had his good runs his best players came from Southside, which is K-8 and has maybe 60 8th graders a year compared to West Wilson which has 500+
  4. My guess would be that Troy left because of the pay raise he got going to Rutherford Co., can't blame him. Great coach, great guy, proving it again at Oakland. He started the program at Central and took them to Murfreesboro 2 or 3 times (maybe 2 with 1 substate appearance). He is the real deal. The big problem at Central is the apathy ( coaches and administration) at their largest feeder program, West Wilson Middle School. The coach they have now and the one that preceeded him would not do the extra work required to be successful. No open gyms in the summer, taking 3 weeks off in December for your 7-8th grade team, not taking advantage of the rules for practice in the summer. Mt. Juliet people get it. Great 6th grade program at MJMS with a guy who has been doing it for 10+ years who keeps 14-15 kids a year, open gyms all summer long, playing AAU all spring with incoming 5th graders. Then you turn them over to Cheri Abner (not fair to have someone like her) for their 7-8th grade years and she is fantastic. West Wilson has nothing like that going on, new coach at Central is going to be lucky to get 2-3 kids a year from one of the largest middle schools around. This is going to be a tough job for anyone to turn around, and until it changes at the lower level I don't think it is going to get better.
  5. owe you an apology. I read that wrong. But I do think we are missing out on kids being able to play because of this dumb rule. How many kids in Tennessee go on to play after high school? 1-2%? My worry is the kid who needs basketball, or any sport for that matter to maybe push him or her in the right direction later on in life. We have to get over this thing of making dumb rules that keep kids from playing. That is the most important part of sports, making the kids feel like they are a part of something. Make it fun, have rules that the kids need to follow to be a part of the program, but don't let kids get gone just because shorts that don't fit.
  6. warmachine 7954 you said If disallowing rolled waistbands ruins a game it's not much of a game to start with. But then you replied to me with this "Organized game, standards are expectations, blah, blah, blah." so what is it? were you in between meds, cause it sound like you are talking out both sides of your neck. Bob bigelow Just Let the kids Play read it
  7. and by the way guess none of yall had to wear "high waters" to school when you were growing up. Kind of embarrassing. Imagine being the kid who has to wear a uniform that is 2 sizes too large when you are a sophomore or freshman. Yall need to go back to complaining how bad the refs are and get off the kids wearing different shorts.
  8. Ok i will give you the "uniform rule", no rolling shorts. But why does the TSSAA not make all the kids wear the same shoes? We are missing the point here, the most important part is to get as MANY kids as possible playing. Who gives a rats #### if they have the same shorts, top, shoes. It is about kids playing middle school and high school basketball, football, volleyball, whatever. Yall are making this a waaaaay bigger issue than it ought to be. Does not have anything to do with AAU. We are missing kids, especially in basketball, football because of uniform restrictions. What a joke. LET THE KIDS PLAY. By the way there is a great book out there with the same title. Some of you dummies ought to look into it .Seen way to many times where a kid does not get to dress because a coach does not have enough "uniforms" for all the kids who deserve it. And we wonder why little Johnny quits when he is a sophmore. None of these kids are playing after high school. Why mess it up for them?
  9. what does it matter if we are uniform or not? why does it matter if we roll or don't roll? I can get my finger caught in pocket as easily as i can get it caught in a sleeve or any other corner. As long as one team wears white, or any light color, and one team wears a dark color just let the kids play. Dont care if all the shorts don't match, don't care if one kid has a different color undershirt. You guys who are complaining about this are the problem, not the kids. A bunch of these schools can't buy size specific uniforms every year, and why should they? Aren't we about "Just lettting the kids play". This might be the most ridiculous rule on TSSAA book. You guys are the same bunch worrying about who is transferring somewhere. A Joke.
  10. Mondo-safety was at the scoreboard end of the field, missed field goal was at the opposite end. Funny story one of my best friends is the guy who missed the field goal. One morning i was going fishing and meeting him at his house and I ran into Ed Rice (country ham master) at the gas station and he had been to the gallatin/mj game the night before (maybe 2012???) and knew that I was on the team for the 2-0 game. Was talking about how good of a game it was and then got on the 2-0 game. He said "I was standing in the corner of the end zone and that boy kicked the ball to me." I laughed all the way to my buddies house and told him about it. He had some choice words for Mr. Rice
  11. Golden-sign your name. where did you play? what years? Old bear sign your name. Hide behind a screen name. Classy. I played at mj. We played the best of the best 1981-1983. MJ playing a cupcake schedule right now in the worst 6a region in the state. Yeah Wilson central is falling on hard times but the kids (the most important part) compete. Then have to read or see pics of some wanna be posting how this is a dumpster fire. Y'all ought to be ashamed. Busting on 15-18 year old kids. It is a shame this site can't be more positive. My father played college football for 5 years, coached in high school for 40+, member of the tssaa hall of fame. When someone like that speaks after yall idiots post something that stupid you might want to take a step back and take a look at yourself. I enjoy going on this site a looking around from time to time, but guys like yall need to get a life. David Elrod Once again sign your name, years you played. Keep picking on kids, classy
  12. no need to go through the school for anything, we found it was going to be a hassle if kids wanted to go out of town to fish a tournament, among all the other red tape issues that would come up. Go to the bassmaster.com website or the FLW website everything is explained on both sites. We started one in Mt. Juliet a year and a half ago and have 25 kids from 3 different schools in Wilson co. on the team.
  13. Brown is doing a great job at Central, has the boys playing hard. He better enjoy the next 2 years because he does not have a lot of talent coming. Good kids, just not very talented basketball players. Coach at his largest feeder school(West Wilson)is not doing a good job of developing kids or getting enough kids involved in basketball to overcome attrition or any defections to other sports. West Wilson is the only middle school in Wilson County that does not have a separate 6th grade boys and girls program. We had one for 3 years and then someone (coach, administration) decided he wanted the whole program together, so now we have 21 boys on a 6-8th grade team practicing all together. 6th graders have 7 guys on the team, with the best one transferring after Christmas, and will play 8 games this year, right down the road the Mt. Juliet Middle 6th grade team has 16 boys on the team, will play 25+ games and have separate practices from their 7-8th team. We have 41 boys and girls grades 6-8 involved in basketball, 3 years ago when we had a separate 6th grade program for boys and girls we had 70. Our boys team this spring had 4 practices and 1 scrimmage, 4 open gyms throughout the summer. If your middle school coaches are not busting their tails in developing numbers of kids and fundamentals, and taking advantage of the time in the spring and summer it is going to be tough for the high school coaches to be successful. Unless Central gets a few good transfers it is going to be very lean after this sophomore class is gone
