  1. Unfortunately that's not correct. Each district selects a host region site when it is their turn to host and sends that info to the TSSAA to post. If one district does sweep the tournament is allowed to go back to the district with the 4 remaining teams are left and that district decides where to play usually it's whoever hosted the district tournament but doesn't have to. I have seen a few of the games in 12AA a this time and the 4 teams coming are pretty solid teams as I am sure 11AA is as well just looking at their schedules and results. Pretty hard to sweep these days but you never know. I am sure will be some good basketball at East Hickman I hope this rain allows me to make it for a night. Good luck to all!
  2. I think this district tournament will be a fun one for sure. Any of these teams can get hot and make a good run. Most of the scores have been pretty close for the most part all year. There are some very talented teams and I have seen some entertaining games. Nolensville is very good for sure and will be very tough as a lot of teams will be down the stretch. Will be fun to watch in a great place to host a tournament at Forrest. In the old 9A district there were some great tournament games played there. If Community can iron out their free throw issues which have cost them a few district and non district losses I think they have a shot as does Marshall, Magnet and an athletic Giles team and I wouldn't count out Forrest they are very capable of turning it on here at the end. Will be some fun basketball for sure. One thing I have noticed is the atmosphere in a lot of these games I have seen this year and last just isn't the same as the old districts. The Marshall and Forrest matchup was a fun one and Community and Forrest had a good atmosphere as well. Hopefully that will change during the tournament. Good luck to all teams going forward. Been fun to watch a lot of these teams all year. I have enjoyed just coming to watch basketball in this area for a few decades and I appreciate the time and effort the players and coaches put in for all the fans of basketball.
  3. Just curious..why does the TSSAA classify softball and baseball with basketball? I understand doing baseball/softball together but no other sport was grouped with basketball. The sports are suppose to be divided evenly among participants but are not. There are several districts especially in baseball looking at it that only have 3 to 4 teams playing baseball/softball but 7 to 8 in basketball. Volleyball, track, cross country, golf..all other minor sports we done differently.
  4. I would say it will be very difficult to predict how Forrest and Community will do in the new district. I don't think you can judge past teams based on what you have this season. I would say most teams will have a distinct advantage over both since both schools were barely over the enrollment number for 2A and had more privates stayed at least Community would still be 1A. For most years I don't think either school will have enough athletic depth to compete with the bigger schools but some years both have some very good athletic players. Hopefully, and this is wishful thinking, that the TSSAA will fix this and add more classifications to make it fair for all TSSAA schools in sports other than football. Again, wishful thinking. In the years I have watched the old 9A I can tell you both teams will play hard as I am sure the others do in this district as well. Forrest has had success winning the district a few years back and Community has made the region the last 5 years including 2 sub state appearances with one being last season but there is no way of looking at that and seeing how you will do in another classification. Community I believe graduated most their starters from last year and Forrest returns most of theirs if I am not mistaken. Both teams will be very young or at least inexperienced. I am sure it will be an adjustment especially since both schools are losing their natural rivalries and have none in this new district besides each other. I think the other schools will enjoy going to both places to play as I have seen many games in all the gyms in the old 9A. TSSAA ruined a good thing with that district by breaking it up. The district tournament atmosphere in 9A was amazing especially on the girls side the last few years. A few years ago 9A boys had 2 Mr. Basketball finalist in same district and Community had a player who made all state. I'm sure other schools will find going to both these new schools a fun atmosphere and very friendly people in both places.
  5. My best guess is it was senior night and was letting the kids have a little more freedoms. Although they have scored in the 80's a few times this year looking at scores. Games I have seen especially in the tournament they try and play the style that is most effective against their opponent. Last year was a little slower because they were very big and athletic in the post.
  6. I think there will be some upsets. That's what makes this tournament worth the 5 bucks every night on the boys and girls side. If you like basketball this tournament over the last several years on both sides has been a lot of fun. I don't think the 1 and 2 seed in this tournament has both made the finals the last several years. I may be wrong my memory isn't what it use to be.
  7. Don't really know what records has to do with a night where both teams were making shots. Guess you would have had to see the game. Both teams have double digit wins for the season and I know Community non district schedule is mostly AA and AAA teams. Only games that matter are the district games.
  8. I agree completely. Glad I got out and watched this one. The score may say no defense but it was actually not so. Both teams created a lot of turnovers and transition baskets but what was most impressive was both teams shooting percentage. Had to be way over 50 percent from 2 and 3 and each team I don't think missed many free throws. Both teams played a lot of kids and was a great back and forth game with neither team getting a large lead until the end. I believe score was 51 to 50 at half. The people I was sitting next to said Community bench that played were mostly freshmen especially in their second unit. White House played a lot of kids as well and their overall size hurt Community but all in all a well played fun game to watch to end the season. Hope both teams do well going forward.
  9. They are decently sized. Have a 6'5" post and a couple other bigs that play some. Lost 2 really good athletes last year. You can never really judge them by their record because come tournament time they seem to play their best basketball. They played a decently tough non-district schedule it seems. Lost in region semi last year to Nashville Christian but beat MTCS in district semis and I believe they are 3rd or 4th in the district this year. A team you really don't wanna play usually in the tournament especially if they are the lower seed. They don't really play a specific style just depends on the match up it seems the games I have seen in the past. They can play decently fast or can walk it up and play a slower pace. They are fun to watch in the district tournament.
  10. What does the field umpire have to do that he couldn't keep a clicker in his pocket and count every half inning? You would rather a manager or a parent do it for the home team? Most programs in the smaller classes have 1 or 2 coaches at best? Don't think this would prohibit them from call balks, safe and catch in the field? This isn't basketball it's not like they couldn't keep up. The problem is they do not want the responsibility. Last thing you want is coaches arguing with each other in a tight game over pitch counts or worse home coach telling the visiting coach he needs to remove his pitcher..think that should come from the umpire. Just my opinion though
  11. IMO this needed to be done. The old rule was just too much for pitchers and some coaches did abuse this. And I don't think in the higher classifications this will be an issue because a lot of schools have a varsity and a true jv team. The problem is for the mid to smaller schools who have kids regularly play varsity and jv because by the new rule the JV games count towards this as well. For sure something had to be done. The part I don't agree with is the home team being the official counter. This should be done by the field umpire and he informs the coach after each half inning how many pitches he threw that inning. The home team already is responsible for official book and there is usually no problem there but imagine if the counter is off a few pitches and the home team has a kid at the limit but the visitor says he has one more batter and your in a close district game. Just think the count needs to be kept by an umpire so if they mess up the count we are use to them making a few bad calls! just kidding for the most part umpires do a solid job. I was wondering does it say what would happen if a coach forgot his forms? I'm sure with this being new this is bound to happen. With so many games played on back to back days the pre game meeting with umpires may take a while now to sort who can and can't pitch! lol good posts guys good opinions all.
  12. If Greenback would have had Tom Izzo as their coach the other night would they have beat your team? Don't think he would have made a 50 point difference. Coaching comes into play when both teams are somewhat equally talented on some level and like it or not a school that is double in size has an advantage. The high school game is about Jimmy and Joe and not so much X and O. There is only so much a coach can do with a team under 6 ft. Not like college or pro where you can go out and get players to fit "your system" unless your recruiting players in high school to open that can of worms. Maybe your a fan of a private school that attracts better players which is fine but the small county school in Tennessee doesn't have that luxury to no fault of a coach. You have to play with the hand your dealt. While we are at it let's take out the Wing-T offense in high school football because that is straight out of the 50's and it's slow, boring and dull. Who cares about 3 yards at a time and controlling the clock and time of possession in football let's spread em out and fling it all over the yard. The facts are there are games where one team is just better and sometimes the only way to defend them is to hopefully keep it away from them a little longer. Your opinion is a shot clock is needed and maybe in your situation that can be very accurate..in other schools it would be detrimental to schools chance to make the game competitive. I agree with other posters..if your team is superior just go get the ball..or maybe those teams need help from the shot clock to make the team shoot because they just may not be that superior after all. It is a competition..we have the ball so come get it..if you can't you will lose..unless you need the shot clock to help you. You started this post to get opinions..sorry I do not agree as others do. This seems to frustrate you from your comments that we all aren't on board with a shot clock. Sounds like you have a very good team wish them the best. Scoring 70 on anyone in high school is tough shot clock or not.
  13. No shot clock. When you have schools in your district twice your size the only hopes a team may have of being competitive is to shorten the game and limit possessions. If the other team is more talented they should be able to press and create turnovers but you take an option away from coaches with less talented teams which would encompass a large number of schools in all classifications. Then you would have to get a shot clock operator which would be another expense for schools as well as purchasing the clock. Then if you have a malfunction in the clock in a high school game what do you do? In college games they usually have a spare clock or backup plan. A lot of schools run on very small budgets in Tennessee It's just an unnecessary expense most schools can't afford. Plus just my opinion it would lead to more bad shots cause the clock is running down which in turn makes for bad basketball. A shot clock to me would just put the advantage even more to the larger schools in the classifications.
  14. That's a great point it is so much about expenses for sure. Then if that's the case why not group volleyball, golf, soccer the same as baseball/softball? Those are even more of non revenue making sports. Why wouldn't you group them as they did the rest of the non-revenue sports? The TSSAA termed that basketball/baseball/softball is "divided evenly" but then by volleyball they posted "divided evenly by participation"..so which is it because baseball/softball are not divided evenly..when you take out the schools that do not play these sports the number is a lot less especially in A and AAA. If you divided it evenly based on participants wouldn't that allow for more balance and less travel? I don't know but I think if you asked a coach which would you rather take longer bus rides or playing schools the you have a more competitive balance with as far as enrollment goes they will probably take the latter. Here is an example..Tullahoma, Stone Memorial and Lawrence Co. are barely above the AAA cutoff..If you take out the schools who do not participate these schools would probably go to AA. That would put Tullahoma and Lawrence in a district with Marshall Co., Giles, Murf.Central, Nolensville and Stone would be in with Bledsoe, Cumberland Co., Grundy, Marion and Sequatchie I think. I know there is not an easy solution there are4 variables on all sides for sure. Just think in my opinion that Baseball/Softball need to be separated like the other non revenue sports and not grouped into basketball. If you look under baseball districts they even have Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy listed in District 4 in Class A baseball. I guess saddest part as we will both agree for sure it is about money which is the worst. Most coaches who coach baseball and softball are underpaid or volunteers and all they really want is a chance to compete during the season. Will be tough for schools like stone to beat a Cookeville that is twice their size. And several of the smaller schools in AAA and AA don't have the capacity to expand to ever catch the other schools in enrollment numbers.
  15. I don't have a dog in this fight and honestly don't know where the school is located or past history so I am speaking kinda blind on this but do we know if the players quit after the season or the coaches and school made the decision not to play? To me that would be the deciding factor. Don't know as a coach what you are to do if your team turns their stuff in and says we are done. Do you show up with the 8 or 9 kids left and say we are here at least we tried? If the coaches told the players we are done then punish the football team next season not the basketball team. Some if not all of the kids that play basketball may have nothing to do with the football situation. Did they also punish the football team for the following season as well? This is like a NCAA coach cheating, resigning and moving to a new job and then the school he was at get violations because of him. What are you really showing them by doing this that if someone else does wrong the innocent pay the price and not those who committed the crime? Flip it around...if the boys basketball team would have done this you think TSSAA would have suspended the football program at any school knowing they would lose a playoff gate possible? This just kinda proves everyones thoughts that they care only about football and football money.
