I could have sworn Davis was older, but I could be wrong. I did find a link on TACA that shows a Keith Davis in the Class of 1984 at Overton.

One way to figure is out is if anyone remembers if he went JUCO, or if he redshirted at UT. He lettered 1985-88 at UT; if he went the JUCO route, his first year out of high school should have been 1983; if he went straight to UT and redshirted, his first year out should have been 1984.

I think you are right. I know I played baseball against Fruit in spring '83. I was thinking Davis was a year older. Keith Davis was the 200 meter state champion at the state track meet in '84. Must have been a year younger.

Terry Potter is a solid choice as well.

Cary Curd finished up at McGavock so I included him there as well as Buck at Maplewood.

Sorry I left off Cumberland High. Unintenional.

As I said, feel free to add to the list. It was fun making it up.

Keith Davis was from Overton but if my memory serves me correctly he graduated with the 1981 state championship team & the NIL folded around 1979.

Keith Davis graduated in 1984. He was named NIL MVP fall of'83. He was a great player. I can name many from Overton. Mark Femster, Greg Cornell, Mike Beckham, Charles "Fruit" Bell, Phil Hoard, Chris Coutras

In the fall of 1961, Overton in only their 2nd year of varsity competition and being only Juniors had a 9-1 record with their only loss being to Chatt. Brainerd in the last game of the season. Some names that played during that time were super freshman Roger Green, along with David Graeflin, John Kearns, Ed Hessey, Wayne Clendenen, Tommy Harper, John Norman, Bryan Smith and Billy Harris just to name a few. They also had a German exchange student by the name of Ulrich Wolff, who at that time was a soccer style kicker which, of course, was unheard of. He kicked a 37 yard FG against Hillwood, I believe, which at the time was a modern day KIL record. He kicked several FG's that year, one to help beat Maplewood 10-6. I am sure that I left out some of the members of that team but when you are my age, memory is the first thing to go. Thanks to everyone on here in helping bring back some wonderful memories.

IMO, the following players were the best ever in the old NIL:

Defense: E.J. Junior (Mapelwood) & Greg Gaines (DuPont) both of these guys had long careers in the NFL

Offense: Bill Wade (MBA), Mike Wright (Father Ryan), and Ingle Martin (MBA) all played professional football or professional baseball.

MVP: "Jefferson Street" Joe Gilliam (Pearl, Tennessee State & Pittsburgh Steelers)

Better than Terry Bradshaw and proved it but the NFL was not ready for a minority to play QB on a Super Bowl championship team.

The NIL was gone by the time Ingle Martin played.......

The NIL was around in the 1980's.

Wasn't there a player at Bellevue that was pretty big in the late 70's by the name of Tim Clem?

I graduated in 1982 and the NIL was still around. I graduated from Maplewood. I was there when the Maplewood-Father Ryan games were classic. I can remember having to park all the way down to Dickerson Road and walk to the stadium. We even had an incident where the Ryan coaches where on the overpass with binoculars spying on the practices. Boy those were the days!!!!!

Bigchief:

William Douglas at Hendersonville had the nickname "Chicken Man".

Would have included both Eddie Preston and Ricky Gwin from Hillwood.

Tony Glover from Antioch? was a heck of a player.

Barry Munda from Madison ran like a blur.

One of the best that never finished because of a blown knee and "old" surgery was Barry Duke from MBA.

Two from Hendersonville stand out, Doug Holland and Jeff Lane.

Glad you mentioned George Volkert from Litton. Got the pleasure of knowing him before he passed away when his wife worked for me. Was an All-American at Georgia Tech I do believe. George was the person who brought this thing called a "mall" to Nashville.

I recall Bear Bryant going to a Hendersonville game to see a 6'4", 245 lb. linebacker, (in the '70's), who was a junior and gave up football in the middle of the year.

Someone mentioned Terry Potter from Goodlettsville, long blonde hair and could fly.

I thought Harry Majors played more than one year at Mt. Juliet but was talking to someone not too long ago who said he just played his senior season. He and Preston Brown would duel it out at the Optimist and Banner Relays in track.

Good Post! :thumb:
