Does Coaching Matter in High School

Knoxville has an interesting situation. Of the six real volleyball schools, CAK, Bearden, Hardin Valley and Catholic have brand new, young, coaches with zero coaching experience in high school. Farragut and Webb have seasoned coaches, Webb has the best high school coach East Tennessee has ever produced. My question is does high school coaching really matter?

Catholic and Bearden picked club coaches to satisfy disgruntled parents. Bearden has a super star who doesn't need a coach, Catholic is way down and coaching doesn't matter. CAK is loaded with talent, most in town, and HV both promoted assistants. Does it matter.

Isn't most coaching done in club. Can a high school coach have any real impact anymore?

Looking at the AAA schools Bearden and Farragut, the District was won by Farragut, not by coaching, but by the coach and team getting out of the way so the star player could get the job done. Bearden, if they learned anything last Thursday, is let your star player do what she does and stay out of her way. Coaching no longer impacts the game when you have talent let them play.

i guess coaching depends on the super stars on the other side of the net.  Coaching is strategy, making small adjustments and maybe an actual set play when you need a point.  If the other players got out of the way, who set her the ball?

If the superstar hits every position and there are players on the other side of the net that can block and dig, she may hit 45%.  If the players on the other side have some talent and are coached, they can make it hard for the superstar to get the ball, especially when her teammates just get out of the way...

Since this thread started off about does coaching matter in high school?  It would seem to me that using the same logic in club would apply.  Does coaching really matter at the club level when you have the best players from your area on the same team?  Maybe coaching an all-star team is easier than a high school team.  Just thinkin' out loud.

All you have to do it look at a team like Goodpasture that loses its first match in the state tournament 3-1 and then wins out 5 straight  including a 3-1 over the South Greene team that beat them two days earlier to win their 4th straight state championship. All four teams had different leaders and identities. In 2012 and 2013 they were very talented and just plain better than everyone else. However in 2014 and 2015 the teams were not as strong, they just outworked everyone else.

Coaching matters at both the high school and club levels. I have seen really good and REALLY bad coaching in both arenas.Just because you have a roster of all-stars does not mean you are a good coach. People that think that are at best uninformed and at worst just plain stupid.
