Several Brighton High wrestlers fared very well last Saturday at the Millington Trojan Invitational, including a junior who won his second tournament this month.

It all added up to a fourth place finish for the Cardinals, just 2.5 points behind St. George's, one of the better teams in West Tennessee.

Team captain Joshua Love won the 138-pound class.

Joshua was dominant,” said Brighton coach Larrick Johnson.

Love opened the tournament with a pin in the second period over Millington’s Seth Saigeon, followed by a tech fall score of 18-3 in the second round. In the semifinals Love pinned Joey Zazzara of St. Benedict in the first period in 1:29.

In the finals, Love continued his run by finishing off Paul Gorham of Christian Brothers with another tech fall score of 17-2, not surrendering a point in the match, giving Gorham the two points.

Joshua was one match away last year from qualifying for the state tournament,” Johnson said. “He has put in a lot of hard work in the offseason and it’s paying off. That said, we still have some work to do to be one of the top four wrestlers in the region. I believe he will reach his goal this year.”

Brighton sophomore Zane Mendoza placed third in the 132-pound class.

He went 3-1 on the day, losing only to tournament champion Andrew Adams of Munford in the first round.

Brighton sophomore William (Braxton) Osborn placed third at 220, going 1-2 on the day, losing a close match to Jordan Cheairs of Memphis East.

I thought I had him this time,” Osborn said. “I lost to him earlier in the year. My goal is to beat him before the end of the season.”

The Cardinal parade to the podium rounded out with freshman Gavin Haynes, who placed third at 152. He went 4-1 on the day, losing to the tournament champion Levi Condy of Christian Brothers in the first round.

Gavin went on a roll after that loss,” said Johnson.

In the second round, Haynes pinned Carlos Velez of Millington in just 46 seconds. In the third and fourth round it was much of same as he pinned Michael Bower of Memphis East in 51 seconds and Brennan Cowan of Munford in 52 seconds.

In the third-place match, Haynes was matched up with Munford’s Jalan Huffman, a veteran for the Cougars.

I would say it was the match of the tournament with all eyes on both wrestlers,” Johnson said. “Gavin was able to pull out a last min 12-11 win for his bronze medal … I’m proud of all our wrestlers who contributed to our fourth-place finish.”

Brighton returns to action Thursday, Jan. 11, at Munford, before a home match on Jan. 16 for senior night against Bolton and Bartlett. Both matches begin at 5 p.m.

It’s a rivalry in every sport for Maryville and Alcoa, but wrestling was in the spotlight Tuesday night.

Facing off inside the gymnasium at Alcoa Middle School, Maryville won the first seven weight classes and picked up a 54-24 dual win over the Tornadoes.

After a forfeit win by Maryville in the 120-pound class to start the match, the Rebels reeled off wins from Parker Hill (126 pounds) with a pin, a technical fall from Colby McCall (132), and pins from Michael Steverson (138) and Samuel Morris (145).

That was followed up by a major decision win from Alaeldin Gibril in the 152-pound class and a close 16-13 decision from Jay Russell in the 160-pound class over Alcoa’s William Carter.

After those first seven weight classes, Maryville held a 36-0 advantage on the scoreboard.

With just seven more matches left, Alcoa was left in a tough spot.

“We did very well,” Maryville coach Alex Cate said. “(Alcoa) has some talented middleweights and so do we. I knew it was going to be a good battle and most of my middleweights came out on top and that was the difference in the match for sure.”

Cate feels like the rivalry between the two schools brings out the best in all of the wrestlers on each side.

“A cross-town rivalry,” Cate said. “Anytime we get a chance to beat them we want to and anytime they get a chance to beat us they want to in anything. The guys are always pumped up for the Alcoa match for sure.”

Zuriel Hampton-Coffin won by pin in the 106-pound class for Maryville. Overall, the Rebels won three weight classes by forfeit, but won four weight classes by pin, one on a decision, one on a major decision and one by technical fall.

All four of Alcoa’s weight class wins came by pin.

Alex Richardson gave the Tornadoes their first points as he came up with a pin in the 170-pound class.

That was followed up by a Colton Wade pin in the 182-pound class.

After Alcoa had to forfeit the 195-pound class, the Tornadoes pulled off two more wins, with Grey Carroll pinning his opponent in the 220-pound class and Grant Brace winning in the heavyweight class.

Brace was honored before the match started for winning his 100th career match at an individual tournament at Father Ryan on Saturday.

At the same tournament, Brace finished second in a loaded 220-pound weight class.

“He has worked pretty hard at it,” Alcoa coach Brian Gossett said of the senior wrestler picking up 100 career wins. “I’m pretty proud of him for doing that. Anytime you get a kid that has committed as much time as he has committed then you are happy to see him get the results.”

Besides Brace, Gossett liked what he got out of other wrestlers as well.

“We bumped up Alex Richardson and Colton Wade in hopes that we could get some pins and get some six-point decisions against Maryville and those two kids delivered,” Gossett said. “Grey Carroll at 220 helped us get to 24 points and William Carter at 160 even though he lost his individual effort was really, really good.”

The individual wins were nice, but Gossett needs to see more from the team before the region duals next month.

“We got a lot of work to do,” Gossett said. “We have got to improve our practice habits. We have to improve our day-to-day mentality. I think we learned some good lessons tonight about that because Maryville was pretty dialed in at spots and we weren’t.”

Walker Valley Wrestlers Rally For 45-26 Win

East Hamilton Shorthanded As Three Forfeits Help Mustangs

Tuesday, January 9, 2018 - by John Hunt

CHARLESTON, Tenn. – The East Hamilton Hurricanes won the battle, but the Walker Valley Mustangs won the war.

The Hurricanes had a 6-5 advantage in matches won at the home of the Mustangs Tuesday night, but dual-meet wrestling teams normally don’t have much of a chance of winning when there are holes in the lineup.

Such was the case in this match as Walker Valley took advantage of three forfeits and ended up winning the match by a final score of 45-26.

Take away those 18 free points and the Mustangs would still have prevailed by a point.

The Mustangs may have been victorious, but head coach Alan Morris was anything but happy when the final outcome had been determined.

“I’m really pretty frustrated as we just didn’t have any intensity tonight,” Morris said afterward.

“We didn’t take many steps forward tonight as we didn’t get any better as a team, although we had a few individuals who claimed some big wins.

“That was another good win for Chandler Davis at 113 and the match at 120 was another rematch from the Central finals on Saturday.  We lost there tonight as their guy was more ready than we were.  And I’m really happy for Tyler King as he keeps improving all the time and has been a pleasant surprise for us.

“We were up 5-0 at 145 and maybe should have won that match, but conditioning got us.  Give Cade Meeks credit as he’s a pretty good wrestler.

“We have a big match here on Thursday with Soddy Daisy and I hope things change between now and then or we’ll get whipped,” Morris concluded.

East Hamilton coach Ryan Cooper was happy for the most part.

“That was a good effort tonight and it’s all about us continuing to get better,” he began his post-match comments.

“It was a big night for Conner Thornburgh as he won after losing to that kid at Central on Saturday.   And Cade Meeks won in overtime, but he just wants to do things his way and can be such a bonehead at times.  It’s tough to come back when you’re down 5-0 early, but he was able to do it.

“We’ve all been sick and we’re just getting back from Christmas break.  We’re just trying to get ready for the final run next month,” Cooper nodded.

Meeks improved to 21-3 with his overtime win at 145 in what turned out to be the best match of the evening.

Zeth Haynie caught Meeks in a throw and had him on his back early in the first period for a 5-0 lead before Meeks scored a reversal to trail 5-2 when the first period ended.

Meeks escaped to start the second period before Haynie got a takedown 25 seconds later.  Meeks scored another reversal near the end to trail 7-5 with two minutes remaining.

Haynie extended his lead to 9-5 with a reversal to start the third, but Meeks shifted into another gear in the final 30 seconds to get a reversal and two back points at the buzzer to force overtime.

Meeks then prevailed with a takedown 38 seconds into the extra one-minute segment.

Elijah Vance got the first of two pins for the Hurricanes in the first match at 106 pounds for a 6-0 lead before Davis got the Mustangs on the board with a 5-1 decision at 113.

The Hurricanes then won four of the next five matches for a 20-9 lead following Meeks’ 9-7 overtime decision at 145, but the rest of the match belonged to the Mustangs.

East Hamilton got a second-period pin from Jason Brumlow at 182, but Walker Valley won six of the final seven bouts, including three by forfeit and the other three by pin.

Joey Vecchione had the quickest fall in 50 seconds at 152 while Nick Buck needed just 56 seconds to win at 220.  Heath Tanksley also had a pin in 4:28 at 170.

Other winners for East Hamilton included Seth Carpenter and Joshua Chisenall, both getting major decisions at 126 and 138, respectively.

WALKER VALLEY 45, EAST HAMILTON 26

106 – Elijah Vance (EH) pinned Karson Huff, 5:44;

113 – Chandler Davis (WV) dec. Te’Nario Thomas, 5-1;

120 – Conner Thornburgh (EH) dec. James Jur, 7-2;

126 – Seth Carpenter (EH) major dec. Conner Fay, 17-3;

The Cookeville High School wrestling team picked up two wins on Tuesday as the Cavs took down Riverdale 57-21 and Shelbyville 60-20 at CHS.

"I felt pretty good about our performance," CHS head coach Scott Cook said. "We've still got some things to clean up as far as our offense and making transitions from takedowns to turns and combinations, but we'll continue to work on that and get better. My guys wrestled aggressively, they were fired up, and they really set a fast tempo. I'm excited we were able to do that, and if we can continue it, we'll continue to get better."

In the first match, CHS jumped out to a quick 12-0 lead as the Riverdale Warriors forfeited the 152 and 160-pound weight classes. The Cavs turned that into momentum as Jeff Enochs (170) and Dyllan Houser (182) both got pins to extend their lead to 24-0.

The Warriors then got on the scoreboard with pins over Ethan Cumby (195) and Kaige Whiteaker (220) to make it 24-12 before Gabe Litchford (heavyweight) and Derico Jimerson (106) picked up  forfeit wins for CHS (36-12). Sebastian Hirbar (113) got the action going again with a close decision victory to make it 39-12 in Cookeville's favor.

The Cavs hit a rough patch towards the end of the match as David Weidner (120) was pinned, and Samuel Hadlock lost a close decision to make it 45-21. However, CHS finished strong as Luke Denney (132), Jacob Mahaney (138), and Hunter Harcum (145) all pinned their opponents for the final score.

In the final match of the evening against Shelbyville, it was more of the same for Cookeville but with even more forfeits. The Cavs received 36 points from forfeits in the 113, 120, 126, 138, 145, and 170-pound weight classes.

Of the matches that were actually wrestled, Jimerson won by pinfall, Denney lost by decision, Harcum (at 152) won by pinfall, A.J. Johns won by pinfall, Houser won by pinfall, Whiteaker lost by pinfall, and Litchford lost by pinfall.

"We feel good. We're getting some guys back that have been dealing with sickness and injuries, and we've got a really tough tournament coming up this weekend at Knoxville Halls," Cook said. "We'll kind of use that to gauge where we're at heading into the regional individual tournament. We're going to finish up with some district matches, which will be pretty critical."

Up next, the Cavs will host another try match on Thursday. Matches are scheduled to start at 6 p.m.

The Cookeville High School wrestling team picked up three wins in its second home match of the week on Thursday night at CHS as the Cavaliers beat Livingston Academy 66-12, Coffee County 74-6, and 76-3.

None of the teams CHS played had full rosters, so there were many forfeit wins. However, the Cavs were still able to come up with several quality wins, some from younger wrestlers.

Against Livingston, Ben Reed (132) and Tanner Null (145) scored pinfall victories in the first round of their matches, while Jay Reed (170) and Gabe Litchford (heavyweight) pinned their opponents in the second round. Against Coffee County, Derico Jimerson (106), Sebastian Hirbar (113), Samuel Hadlock (120), Luke Denney (132), Ben Bos (160), Jeff Enochs (170), Dyllan Houser (182), Kage Whiteaker (195), and Litchford all pinned their opponents for 54 of their 74 points, while Hunter Harcum (145) won by decision.

Finally against Upperman, Jimerson, Null, Gage Cravens (160), Nathan Null (170), and Ethan Cumby (220) all scored pins for the Cavs in their final victory.

Up next, the Cavs will head to Knoxville on Saturday for the Halls Invitational.

The Chattanooga Mocs hit the road this weekend for the Virginia Duals in Hampton, Va.  Action takes place on Jan. 12-13 at the Hampton Coliseum.

Founded in January of 1981, the Virginia Duals was an innovator in college wrestling, bringing the dual-meet advancement format into widespread usage.

The tournament grew from eight college teams in 1981 to its current arrangement of 20 colleges in two divisions.

What started out with just four mats on the floor of the Hampton Coliseum has evolved into a 10-mat festival of wrestling, powered by hundreds of volunteers from around the country.

Chattanooga Wrestlers Win One At Virginia Duals

Friday, January 12, 2018
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team opened with a win before dropping its other two matches to ranked opponents at the Virginia Duals today.  The Mocs defeated Kent State 23-15, then lost to No. 11 Northern Iowa (33-7) and No. 20 Lock Haven (22-18).

Kent State brought an 8-4 overall record, including an impressive win over Virginia earlier in the season.  Junior Alonzo Allen set the tone with an 11-3 major decision over Jake Ferri at 125.  The Flashes answered with a 3-2 decision at 133, but senior Michael Pongracz responded with a 7-0 shutout over Tim Rooney at 149.

Kent State took the next two matches to go up 9-7 halfway through the dual.  That's when the Mocs seniors took over and posted four-straight wins.  Chad Pyke scored a decision at 165, followed by the same from Justin Lampe at 174.  Bryce Carr and Scottie Boykin, both ranked No. 15 at 184 and 197, shut the door with tech falls.

Freshman Torrez Finney made his UTC debut after joining the team from the football program.  He had to default after tweaking his knee and did not compete in the Northern Iowa match.

The Panthers won the first five matches to run out to a 20-0 lead in the afternoon bout.  Junior Chris Debien lost in overtime at 133, while Pongracz dropped a tough 5-2 match to No. 8 Josh Alber.

Pyke put the Mocs on the board with a major decision at 165 for his second win of the day.  Carr had another tough battle against No. 11 Drew Foster.  He lost this one 2-1 (TB1) in overtime, for his third loss to Lujan in OT or by a point in the last two years.  Boykin rounded out the Mocs' scoring with an 8-7 win against No. 19 Jacob Holschlag.

Lock Haven jumped out to a 6-0 lead with a pin at 125, but Debien put UTC on the board with a 10-4 win at 133.  Pongracz dropped a close one at 133 to Kyle Shoop (3-2), the first of four wins in a row for LHU.  Justin Lampe won at 174, and UTC nabbed forfeits at 197 and heavyweight to end the evening.

The Mocs are 4-5 overall and back in action tomorrow against Old Dominion.  Match time is set for 10:00 a.m. and live scoring and PPV video links are available on the wrestling schedule page on GoMocs.com.

The Hill hits a milestone...

Richardson Brawl

JEFF BIRCHFIELD • UPDATED YESTERDAY AT 8:42 PM

No wonder they’re called the ’Toppers.

Science Hill beat defending Class AAA state champion Bradley Central 41-27 in a dual meet Friday night and then topped themselves Saturday by winning the 18th annual Fandetti-Richardson Brawl inside the new Topper Palace.

With two individual champions and five finalists, Science Hill beat runner-up Point Pleasant (W.Va.) by a 219-182 margin.

It was the Hilltoppers’ first win in their marquee home meet in a dozen years.

“The Fandetti is always a special weekend for us where we get to stay home and wrestle great competition in our own gym,” Science Hill coach Jimmy Miller said. “We had a good night last night and widened the margin between us and Bradley Central. Today, we’re able to take away a plaque from our own tournament. We got third last year, so to win it today is a momentous occasion for us.”

Senior Luke Story and freshman Braxton Mann captured individual titles with a pair of decisions.

Story beat Kyle Burns of Bearden by a 9-4 decision in the 138-pound final, while Braxton Mann escaped with a 9-8 win over Elijah Hicks of Sullivan East to capture the 113-pound crown.

Three other Science Hill grapplers reached the finals.

Sophomore Joseph Frye lost to Adnan Moaz of Potomac Senior (Va.) in a 16-2 major decision in the 132 final. Senior Arthur James lost a 3-1 decision to Andy Robinson of Bradley Central in the 145 final and junior Chase Diehl dropped a 5-2 decision to Paul Searcy of North Henderson (N.C.) in the 160 final.

Other Science Hill efforts included third-place finishes for Tyler Seeley at 120 and Denzel Medina at 220, and fourth-place finishes for Ian Marek at 152, Weston Brown at 195 and Jesse Cross at heavyweight. Jim Kalogeros was fifth at 182 and Javelle Gillespie placed seventh in the 126 class.

In addition, Isaac Wright from Science Hill wrestled unattached and finished sixth in the 138 division.

“We got five in the finals and missed a couple matches at the end,” Miller said. “Denzel and Jesse lost a couple of close ones. I was glad we wrestled well in the medal rounds and snatched up a few more points.”

Kaleb Bare of Sullivan East finished third in the heavyweight division, while his Patriots teammate Dylan Chase was eighth at 145. Greeneville’s Trent Knight emerged as the individual champion at 182 with a 4-3 division over Ethan Olinger of Pigeon Forge.

Josh Blatt of North Henderson (N.C.) had three pins and a 19-4 technical-fall win in the 120 final to be named the most outstanding wrestler for the lower weight classes (106-145). Andy Aldridge of Lee Davis (Va.) took the honor for the heavier classes (152-185) after scoring four pins and then beating Max Grayson of Bearden by a 23-6 technical fall in the 170 final.

With the Fandetti-Richardson title in hand, Science Hill now turns its attention to a home match with Dobyns-Bennett and Morristown West next Tuesday.

“We get banged up in these tournaments,” Miller said. “There are a lot of bruisers here, a lot of tough matches. So, we’re just trying to get through the next week with Dobyns-Bennett and Morristown West at home to finish out the conference season and to get ready for the postseason.”

Poquoson, Virginia Tech fall in Virginia Duals wrestling finals

The 38th annual Virginia Duals Wrestling 2018 held at the Hampton Coliseum Friday and Saturday.

 (Joe Fudge)
Jim McGrath, Correspondent

The Poquoson High wrestling team, one year removed from capturing the Black and Blue title, made an inspiring run for the American High School Division crown but fell short in the championship match, dropping a 40-26 decision to Camden Catholic on Saturday night, as the 38th Virginia Duals concluded at Hampton Coliseum.

Virginia Tech, also in the championship round, beat Oklahoma in the National College final last year but failed in its title defense, falling to Arizona State 21-15.

AMERICAN HIGH SCHOOL DIVISION

Poquoson had some dramatic moments leading to its championship berth, but ran out of magic as Camden Catholic dominated in the middle weights, scoring 28 unanswered points in the 132- through 160-pound bouts to turn a 13-3 deficit into an insurmountable 31-13 lead.

The Islanders were strong in the early weights. Trevor Wiggins (106) opened the match with six points, scoring a fall with just 13 seconds remaining, while the McCormick brothers, Cole (120) and Patrick (126), added seven team points to give the Islanders its early edge.

After the Fighting Irish from New Jersey dominated, the Islanders’ Colten Hicks (170) won a 12-7 decision to keep Poquoson mathematically alive at 31-16 with four bouts remaining. But Camden’s Ronald Crane narrowly defeated Ian Burress 6-5 in the 182-pound bout to provide the winning points and halt the Islanders’ opportunity for back-to-back championships in different divisions.

NATIONAL COLLEGE DIVISION

Ryan Millhof (125) and Ali Niser (132) earned seven points for the Sun Devils in the first two bouts, and the Hokies could not catch up.

Zack Zavatsky (184) and Jared Vaught (195) won major decisions toward the end of the match to pull Virginia Tech within 18-15, but Arizona State’s Tanner Hall won a 6-1 decision over Tech’s Andrew Dunn at 285 pounds to provide ASU with the championship.

AMERICAN COLLEGE DIVISION

King University of Tennessee defeated Liberty 30-8 to claim the American College title.

The Apprentice School earned a berth in the third-place match but lost to Ferrum 24-16.

The Greeneville High School wrestling team has made earning a trip to the state tournament in Franklin an annual thing.

But where some programs might become complacent, GHS head coach Randy Shelton said Monday afternoon, ‘Each one is special.’

The Greene Devils earned their sixth consecutive ticket to the big dance by winning the Region 1-A/AA Duals Tournament championship on their home mat Monday. Elizabethton gave Greeneville a good fight, but the Devils were able to walk away with a 48-35 victory.

The TSSAA State Duals Championships are scheduled for Feb. 2.

“We did what we had to do today,” Shelton said. “It wasn’t pretty, it wasn’t the most elegant win we have had, but our guys wrestled tough.”

“I can’t say enough about my seniors Malachi Owens, Garrett Wright and Seth Brown. The fight of a lot of our kids was really good.”

Greeneville, which won the state title in 2013, now will begin preparations to improve on last year’s state runner-up finish.

“It really is exciting for these guys,” Shelton said. “You think it would get to the point where we are used to it, but every one is special. I think it helps that we have been there because our kids want to go back, they love going back. They fight a little extra hard to make sure that they are not the team that doesn’t get to go.”

In the region finals showdown on Monday, the Devils fell into a quick 12-0 hole with Joseph Ketcher (285) and Hunter Morrell (106) of Elizabethton both earning pins.

A pair of forfeits by the Cyclones then tied things up at 12-12 and a hard-earned pin by Morgan Montgomery (126) in the third period of his match gave Greeneville its first lead of the afternoon.

In the first period, Montgomery was thrown out of bounds and off the mat by Cory Lawson. The hard fall stunned him momentarily, but on the restart he came out inspired, quickly tying the match before taking the win.

Montgomery is one of several football players on the Greene Devils’ wrestling roster. The gridiron Devils won a state championship last month and in doing so extended their season by five weeks.

That cut into the start of wrestling season and has made it difficult for Greeneville’s wrestlers to assemble a cohesive lineup. They will hope to do that over the next three weeks.

“We need the kids to gel,” Shelton explained. “We’ve not put the same lineup on the mat very much this season. We’ve had the flu, injuries and even coming out of football way late has had our lineup all over the place.

“We need to get the best 14 kids we can in the right weight classes to be ready for state duals.”

Elizabethton tied the match again at 18-18 on a pin by Andrew Fontanez (132) before Greeneville got big pins from Malachi Owens (138) and Seth Brown (145) to move in front 30-18.

Issac Haynie (152) had one of the biggest performances of the day for the Devils, though it came in a losing decision. Kilroy Hill, who placed third in the state as an individual last year, was a tough opponent for Haynie, but he refused to let himself get pinned in an 18-2 loss that only gave the Cyclones five team points instead of six

Greeneville senior Garrett Wright (160) followed with a pin in just 50 seconds.

Deuce Morton (170) answered with a quick pin for the Cyclones to narrow the gap to 36-29.

Trent Knight (182) – the defending state champion at 170 lbs. – then won by forfeit, which put Greeneville on top 42-29 and mathematically clinched the matched.

“Elizabethton is a great team and they field state qualifiers and state medalists,” Shelton pointed out. “Anytime we can get tough competition and still come out winners, it helps for the three matches at state duals.”

In the final two bouts, Chris Taylor (190) of Elizabethton pinned Ashton Greenier and Michael Moore (220) of Greeneville pinned Alexander Conley.

Greeneville will now turn its attention to its own Greeneville Invitational Tournament this weekend, where it will have an opportunity to see some of the top Class A/AA in the state before they head to Franklin in February.

“We have the GIT this weekend,” Shelton said. “We will see a lot of these Elizabethton kids there. Pigeon Forge, Greenbrier, Hixson and Chattanooga Central will be there. A lot of A/AA teams are coming in and it will be like a mini state tournament. We will be tested and that is the key. We want to test ourselves over and over and eventually the best kids come out on top.”

Greenville started the day by beating West Greene 84-0 in the semifinals. The Devils took advantage of seven forfeits in the win while Carter Adams, Colin Reed, Robert Freeman, Haynie, Wright and Greenier all earned pins.

West Greene won the first match of the day over Happy Valley. The match finished tied at 30-30 but the Buffaloes won the tiebreaker of most matches won to advance 31-30.

Both teams traded forfeits but in the three contested matches West Greene won two with Dakota Wood and Zack Ricker earning pins.

Happy Valley and West Greene met again in the third-place match on Monday and in the second meeting Happy Valley won 42-18.

Sullivan East placed fifth in the region tournament.

Following a complete beat down of Franklin County in a 57-18 victory, Tullahoma High School Head Boys Wrestling Coach Al Morris was caught off guard by a surprise on Monday evening.

The victory in the Boarder Battle at Old West Middle School, was Morris’ 100th career victory at helm of the Tullahoma program. The Wildcats went on to win two other matches on the night, downing Coffee County 54-24 and beating Shelbyville 44-12, to move him up to 102 career wins.

Morris, who had no idea what his career win total was heading into Monday’s action, was surprised after he was pulled to the middle of the wrestling mat. With two matches left to go on the night, Morris said he was ready to get the next dual match underway, and was shocked by the recognition.

“I was anxious to get going again,” Morris said. “It kind of caught me off guard for sure.”

The THS coach was also surprised to learn that his brother, Andy Morris, and father, Alan Morris, were in attendance specifically for the occasion. Morris joked that he might have reached the milestone sooner had he not continually scheduled tough opponents, something he believes can only make his team better.

“That was awesome that they were there,” Morris said. “I wasn’t expecting that to happen. For them to be a part of that, you know wrestling has been a part of our whole family’s life. My dad is still the coach at Walker Valley and for all I knew, they still had a wrestling match that night.

“Overall, it was just a great experience and if I might not have scheduled all of these tough matches, we might have been there a year or two (sooner).”

In his 100th career win, Morris saw his team completely dominate from the start against Franklin County, as the Wildcats won seven-straight matches to grab a commanding 39-0 lead. Six of those first seven wins for Tullahoma came by way of pin (six points).

Luke Price (132), Sam Dean (138), Harvie Halliburton (145), Zack Bonee (152), John Smith (170) and Brenden Adkins (182) all won their matches by pins. Eli Dean also added a win, defeating William Dykes by way of a 7-2 decision (three points) in the 160-pound bout.

Tullahoma’s final three wins against Franklin County all came by forfeit (six points). Akil Hicks (220), Luke Champion (285) and Xavier Sanson (126) all went unopposed in their matches.

With the score tied at 6 after two matches against Coffee County, Tullahoma answered with seven-straight wins, taking a commanding 48-6 advantage. Four of those seven wins for the Wildcats came by way of pins, while three were forfeits.

Bonee, Adkins, Galen Raines (182) and Champion all won their bouts by pins. Smith, Brian Nelms (195) and Hicks all went unopposed in their matchups.

Sam Dean previously won his matchup by forfeit for Tullahoma, before Price added the final win for the Wildcats with a first-round pin, making the final score 54-24.

In its final matchup of the day, Tullahoma seized control early over Shelbyville, winning seven of the first eight matches, grabbing a commanding 38-6 lead, on the way to a 44-12 victory.

Tullahoma won the first five matchups against Shelbyville, two by pins, two by forfeit and one by technical fall (five points). Halliburton and Smith won by forfeit, while Bonee and Nelms won by pin. Adkins then dominated Gregory Guiln by way of a 20-5 technical fall victory.

Hicks followed with a narrow 8-5 win over Frank Watts, before Champion pinned Austin McBee for the Wildcats. Sam Dean added the final win for Tullahoma by way of a forfeit.

Tullahoma is scheduled to head to Forrest High School on Thursday to take on Forrest and Cheatham County, with matches starting at 5:30 p.m. THS will then head to Lawrence County on Tuesday for a match starting at 6 p.m.

Eight Patriot wrestlers earn IMAC titles

Eight Jefferson County wrestlers earned Inter Mountain Athletic Conference individual championships on Monday morning, winning their weight classes in the annual conference tournament.

Jaycee Reff, Landon Fisher, Logan Fisher, Cody Harris, Cameron Evon, Aaron Lawson, C.J. Pinkston and Taylor Thomas all earned the top conference awards.

Reff finished first in the 120-pound weight division after receiving a bye in the quarterfinal and then defeating Seymour’s Jason Barnes in the semifinal and Sevier County’s Nick Moreno in the championship bout.  Both of his wins came by pin in the first period of action.

Likewise, Landon Fisher defeated Seymour’s Easton Joyce in the semifinals of the 126-pound division before going on to earn a major decision, 11-2, over Morristown-West’s Juan Rodriguez in the title match.

Logan Fisher also received a bye in the quarterfinal round, which then pitted him against Seymour’s Chad Washam in the semifinals of the 132-pound class.  Fisher made quick work of Washam, winning by pin in a mere 36 seconds. Fisher went on to defeat Morristown-West’s Adrian Bautista in the championship match by pin in the first period.

Harris and Evon each received byes in their opening quarterfinal matchups.

Harris pinned Morristown-West’s Connor Lawson in the 138-pound semifinal to move on to the championship where he defeated Sevier County’s Samuel Jennings by fall at the 4:37 mark to earn the 138 championship.

Evon also received a bye in the semifinal round and took a 20-14 decision over Morristown-East’s Codie Hadley in the championship matchup.

Aaron Lawson needed less than a minute combined in both of his matches, both the semifinal and championship bouts, to earn the 170-pound title.  Lawson defeated Seymour’s Ryan Breeden in just 17 seconds in the semifinal round and then made quick work of Sevier County’s Ethan Arwood in the championship match, pinning his opponent in only 26 seconds.

Finally, Patriot heavyweights C.J. Pinkston and Taylor Thomas earned division titles. Pinkston received a quarterfinal bye before downing Morristown-East’s Jacob Williams at the 1:48 mark of the semifinal match. He went on to defeat South Doyle’s Tyrese Torey in the championship bout of the 220-pound division, pinning Torey at the 3:29 mark.

Thomas was given byes in both the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds, sending him straight to a championship matchup with Seymour’s Jesse Dunaway for the 285-pound title. Thomas needed just one period to earn the division championship, as he won by fall in 1:49 to earn the title.  The Patriots are back in action this weekend at the Heritage Duals, the last match before next Thursday’s Region 1-AAA Duals.

Farragut’s McKeefery, CAK’s Chinique champs in annual Halls Invitational

January 18, 2018

KNOXVILLE --- Five area high school wrestlers earned medals at one of the Volunteer State’s prestigious tournaments Saturday.

And two of those athletes left North Knox County with championships at the Halls Invitational Jan. 13, which is traditionally contested during the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday weekend.

Tyler McKeefery, Farragut High School junior, claimed the championship in the 113-pound weight class. Eli Chinique, Christian Academy of Knoxville senior, claimed the title in the 285-pound division.

Admirals freshman Zach Garabrandt finished third in the 126-pound weight class.

The Warriors got a runner-up finish from freshman Gavin Cagle in the 152-pound bracket. CAK’s Brendan Jarvis [132 pounds] came in fourth.

McKeefery, one of the area’s top lightweight wrestlers, defeated Chattanooga McCallie’s Emory Taylor by injury default in the title match. Taylor, 2017 Division II state champion and the state’s top-ranked 113-pounder in Division II this season, retired with 27 seconds left in the third period.

McKeefery had an 8-3 lead when the Blue Tornado coaching staff stopped the bout.

“This was a big win. I came in really wanting to win this tournament,” said McKeefery, who recently went up a weight class after spending both his freshman and sophomore campaigns as a 106-pounder and making the Class AAA State Tournament in each of those seasons. “It was a tough [championship], but I thought I could beat him because I had beaten him before.

“This was good for me because I haven’t seen any really tough competition in this region,” he added.

“We’re starting to get over some of our injuries and these kids have really come a long way,” Farragut head coach Bobby Hampshire said. “They’ve worked really hard.

“This year, our team is a little small but these guys have been very competitive,” he added. “Tyler did great. That kid [Taylor] was a state champ last year. Zach has really come a long way. For a freshman, he’s been awesome.”

Chinique won the heavyweight title by fall when he pinned Ooltewah’s Kevin Chang with two seconds remaining in the match.

“I had to wrestle some good competition,” said Chinique, who was the top-seeded heavyweight competing at Halls. “Even though some of those guys were younger, they really gave me a run for my money.”

“This tournament also helped me in my preparation for the regionals,” he added.

In the 152-pound title match, Cagle faced Grace Christian Academy senior Eric Beecham in an extremely tough match with both athletes refusing to yield.

The match appeared to be heading to overtime in a 6-6 deadlock. But after a conference between the two referees, Beecham was declared the winner after he was awarded a point for an escape. He won 7-6.

Hawkins said that his freshman learned a valuable lesson from the heartbreaking loss.

“That was a senior wrestling a freshman. It was great to see Gavin make it to the finals,” Hawkins said. “Gavin learned a lesson. He learned that you can’t leave things in the hands of the officials and you can’t leave things in the hands of your opponents.

“He learned that you have to control the match. He let his opponent control the match.

Archer High School topped North Forsyth in the 2016 Class AAAAAAA wrestling state duals, and head coach Keith Jannett said some doubted whether the Tigers could return after graduating six state finalists, despite the fact Archer was a four-time defending champion.

The Tigers made a run to the finals the following year, edging North Forsyth in the state semifinals and losing to Camden County in the finals. But surely Archer’s streak was over this year, as the team battled injuries and illnesses and lost in the Area 8-AAAAAAA duals to Rockdale County. The Tigers’ road back to the finals last week led them to a quarterfinals match against No. 3 seed North Paulding and another semifinal dual against North Forsyth, before finally meeting Camden County in the finals for another rematch.

After Archer took a brief lead to start, Camden ran away with its second consecutive title 47-13. There was plenty of Archer to be proud of, Jannett said, with Archer wrestling’s streak of six consecutive finals berths in state duals intact.

“It was still a good accomplishment,” he said. “Your goal is always to win state, but after you graduate six state finalists, a lot of people don’t expect you to get back there and most people weren’t counting us as a team to be there.”

Archer didn’t start state duals with the position it desired after losing to Rockdale in the area duals finals. The contest was tight and came down to the final match. Nonetheless, the Tigers were going into state as No. 6 seed. It was there the team banded together and returned some wrestlers after bouts with illnesses. The Tigers steeled themselves for a stretch run.

“If they only wanted the top team from each area, that’s all they would take, but they take the top two,” Jannett said. “A lot can happen at the state tournament. Doing this for 20 years, I’ve seen teams go on runs that people did not expect. I’ve seen teams pull together after a disappointing weekend. I had told them that we had a week of practice to get prepared and fix some things. If they believed we were better than we showed and we could show everybody at the state tournament.

“The goal is to win a state championship, but I was really proud to make it back there.”

Archer leaned on some of its most consistent wrestlers throughout the season to score against Camden. Peter Myndresku scored an early point for Archer, and Will Choloh put the Tigers back on the board before Camden pulled away.

Clarksville Area Coverage...

http://www.theleafchronicle.com/story/sports/high-school/2018/01/17/8-burning-questions-clarksville-basketball-wrestling/1038534001/

Rossview's boys wrestling team has had an outstanding dual season, but this question is posed for the girls' side.... The Lady Hawks have three undefeated wrestlers: Robbin Yunis (125 pounds), Emma Walker (132) and Brielle Bissonette. They are a combined 57-0.

George Robinson | USA TODAY NETWORK - TennesseeUpdated 5:09 p.m. CT Jan. 18, 2018

Most of the high school wrestling dual season is wrapping up this week and early next week, and several schools in Montgomery County will have a chance the district duals.

Clarksville High originally had a four-team dual match Friday against Rossview, Mt. Juliet and Fort Campbell. But after heavy snow and ice blanketed much of Middle Tennessee, that quad has turned into a two-team dual match with just the Wildcats and Hawks.

The Leaf-Chronicle will take a look at a few wrestling nuggets as well as other quick highlights from high school sports around Clarksville in our weekly notebook.

ROSSVIEW BOYS WRESTLING IS LEADING THE PACK

The Hawks' dual record is 30-3, which seems like it should be enough to garner consideration among the state's top wrestling teams this season. But the Tennessee High School Coaches Wrestling Poll has these teams ranked in top 12:

  1. Cleveland
  2. McCallie
  3. Christian Brothers
  4. Science Hill
  5. Baylor
  6. Wilson Central
  7. Bradley Central
  8. Soddy-Daisy
  9. Blackman
  10. Arlington
  11. Brentwood
  12. Halls

Rossview seems to have the horses to pull off a district dual title next week and maybe upset Wilson Central in the Region 6 dual meet.

The Hawks' top wrestlers are Enrique Gonzales (152 pounds, 43-4 dual record), Andrew Arias-Lynch (220, 38-3), Antonio Mariscal (195, 34-6) and Logan McMillan (285, 33-7).

DON'T COUNT OUT CHS, WEST CREEK ON THE MAT

Both Clarksville High and West Creek will not go away quietly. CHS, in particular, seems due after basically controlling this district and its region for nearly 20 years.

Christian Isbell (120) has a 31-2 dual record and is ranked No. 2 in the state. He should be the favorite to win a region individual title while teammate Bradley Williams is ranked No. 1 at 190 pounds with a 23-1 dual record this season.

Kenwood's Nate Thacker (285) and Northwest's Trevor Hanson (170) are the other two area wrestlers ranked. Both are ranked third in the state in their weight class.

With opponents typically outweighing him by at least 50 pounds, Ben Stacey as a "heavyweight" for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team signifies a loose definition of the term.

His match Friday night against Southern Illinois-Edwardsville had no bearing on the final team score, but his result garnered the most adulation.

Stacey registered a 13-7 decision over Bryce Shewan in the final match of the evening, solidifying the Mocs' 29-15 win. UTC improved to 5-6 overall and 3-0 in the Southern Conference and will have another league match Sunday at The Citadel.

The coaches asked Stacey — a 197-pounder who currently weighs 195 — to move up in weight to fill in for regular Connor Tolley, who has been injured. Friday was his first win at 285.

"It felt good to go out and get a win," Stacey said. "I put a lot of work in. Unfortunately our heavyweight is hurt, but Coach asked me to step in, so I give my all for the team and try my best. I love this challenge; it's why I do it. If it was easy, I wouldn't be doing it, but there's something about overcoming the challenge.

Tied at 7 in the final period, Stacey got a takedown of Shewan, then earned four back points to seal the win.

"I stayed consistently on him and was always going at him," he said. "I knew he would break late in the match, so I just kept pushing."

Added Mocs coach Heath Eslinger: "Ben Stacey is what athletics should produce in young people, that model right there. He's resilient, tough, a great teammate; that's what athletics should produce in people. He's a prime example. That's why his teammates were going crazy, because he comes in every day, does what he's supposed to do and gets the job done, and people cheer for that guy.

"The crowd was going crazy tonight because Ben got in a fight with the guy. It was a horrible technical fight, but what it was was a fight and people like that and we've got to do that everywhere. We have some guys that are talented enough that if they would get themselves there, we could be really good, but you've got to go there."

The Mocs got pins from Chris Debien (133) and Bryce Carr (184) and another six points with a forfeit at 174 pounds for Justin Lampe. Michael Pongracz (141) won by technical fall, and Scottie Boykin (197) claimed a 6-3 win.

"All wins are good wins," Eslinger said. "There are ways to get wins; I thought we could win nine of 10 weights, and we didn't. We're going to have some guys that have some off matches, but I thought we had two too many.

"We had a couple of matches where we weren't off: We just didn't do the work to win."

UTC Wrestling defeats SIUE 29-15

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team posted a 29-15 Southern Conference win over Southern Illinois-Edwardsville in Maclellan Gym Friday night.  It was a tight match halfway through the evening before UTC took control.

Chattanooga split the first four matches, but led 11-6 thanks to bonus points.  Junior Chris Debien scored a pin at 133, while senior Michael Pongracz had a tech fall at 141.

"Chris Debien got his weight down and that is how Chris has to go out and wrestle," stated head coach Heath Eslinger.  "When you do that, great things happen."

The Mocs seemed poised to take over when junior Dylan Forzani went up 6-0 at 157.  However, he got caught in a scramble in the second period and was pinned by Karsten Van Velson.

"Dylan Forzani lost, but it is the best he has looked all year," said Eslinger.  "It is not just about winning and losing, it is about effort.  Are you getting better in the things we worked on?  He got caught and it stinks, but I can live with that."

Not only was UTC now trailing 12-11, but senior Chad Pyke gave up a quick takedown and was almost pinned in the opening seconds of the 165 match.  He managed to fight off bonus points before falling to Nate Higgins 10-3.

A forfeit at 174 put UTC back in front 17-15 in the team race and the Mocs won the last three to close out the Cougars.  Senior Bryce Carr, ranked No. 15 at 184 this week, moved to 19-5 overall with an impressive first period pin.

Senior Scottie Boykin had a tough bout with Christian Delaney at 197.  Both Boykin (11) and Delaney (32) are listed in this week's NCAA Rankings.  Boykin was steady in his match and posted a 6-3 decision to improve to 20-5.

That was career win No. 88 for Boykin (88-40), passing Pat Murphy (1980-83) for No. 10 on the Mocs' all-time wins list.

The most entertaining bout came at heavyweight, featuring freshman Ben Stacey.  Stacey weighed in at 195, but moved up to heavyweight due to injuries for the fourth time in a dual this season.

SIUE's Bryce Shewan had a couple of takedowns and took a 4-3 lead into the second period.  Stacey scored a takedown of his own in the second to tie the match at 5-5.  The match was tied at seven in the third when the crowd really got going.

The fans went nuts when Stacey took down Shewan late in the final frame and nearly pinned him for the win.  Instead he scored four backpoints to seal a 13-7 win.

"Ben Stacey is what athletics should produce in young people," added Eslinger.  "He is resilient, tough, great teammate, all of those things.  That is what athletics is about.

"That is why he is fun to coach and that is why his teammates were going crazy.  He comes in every day and he does what he is supposed to do and he gets the job done.  People cheer for that."

Tonight was career win No. 98 for head coach Heath Eslinger (98-60 - .620) in nine seasons with the Mocs.  He is an astonishing 50-4 (.926) in league duals.

Up next for the Mocs is a quick trip to The Citadel.  The Mocs take on the Bulldogs on Sunday, Jan. 21, at 2:00 p.m. in Charleston, S.C.  Follow the action via live scoring links on the wrestling schedule page on GoMocs.com.
