How can TSSAA justify NOT HAVING 4 CLASSES in Baseball?

Here is an idea.   Make 4 classes in every single sport.  Have the same schools in every district/region which establishes rivalries.  If a school doesn't have a team in a sport, ok you don't play them.  Don't say why it can't be done (glass half empty) figure out how it can be done (glass half full).

I have a theory, and only a theory. While football expands classes and makes playoffs more and more abundant to make more money, I think the smaller, non-revenue sports are kept smaller to save money.

Ask an AD or coach what their biggest expense in-season is, and a majority of them will tell you buses. In baseball, because that's what I know, if you make more 'A's you spread teams out more which means longer bus rides which means the budget goes up in a non-revenue sport.

I'll hang up and listen to your comments off air.

That would be spot on.  I was Told by our then A.D. here at Camden that we were colicky in that all our sports supported themselves money wise but many schools are not that lucky. I would imagine in those schools football supports them all.

Not trying to be hard on you Beagle, but it's your community that supports...not the individual programs. You are lucky (same as we are here)...some schools (metro mostly) just don't have solid fan bases. Parents come and go in cycles, but there are over half the usual crowd here that changes little decade by decade.

My main reason for 4 classes is: 1. probably balances out the state more than 3 classifications as far as population from top to bottom (yes 5 classes would balance it more), 2. would keep districts closer for travel and probably not have as many teams in a district as 3 classes would have.

I have not studied this or have any facts to base my ideas on, just a guess.

It's been done for basketball, and should be similar...and yes, it would better all the problems you have listed.

  • 1 month later...

Having to compete with schools more than twice your size is not being SOFT. All schools deserve the chance to compete with schools of similar size. Small or Large... With that logic, you might as well get rid of classifications all together. The system currently is set up for the private schools to be successful because that is where the money is. That is who the T$$AA is and will be concerned with...not the small schools or the large schools but...What is best for the Private Schools. Where did the classes get added? ..Private schools

dude shut up.. the tssaa hates privates.. three classes is fine in baseball and basketball it makes it where you actually have to be good to win state and not skate by playing podunk nowhere teams all the time

    • When Danny was a senior he was the quarterback on the 82 team and also the placeholder on extra points. At the end of the game Heritage scored a touchdown with very little time left and went ahead 9-0. On the following extra point Danny rose up and threw a perfect pass to one of his receivers which made it 11-0 and Heritage's first win against Maryville since the series started in 77. Maryville fans were highly ticked off because they felt like it was rubbing salt in the wound. The following year when both teams met again at Maryville  the Rebels ran away with the game and after the first couple of touchdowns they went for two points after each score for a pay back and the score was 45-0 at halftime. The following Monday Bob Gilbert the sports eiditor for the local paper bashed Maryville in an article called the Humilation of Teenagers and tore into Maryville even though he was a graduate of the school. Those were the good ole days when Heritage had decent teams and the rivalry between them and Maryville was a fun event to see.
    • I get all that.  And I agree too.  However, if the coach is only there to coach that would give them more time to do those things. The school system and booster clubs combine and pay them.
    • 3 sides to every story….Someone getting kicked off for saying the F word then it seems maybe your star player? Probably was the last straw.
