I agree with your logic, but think that it's selfish and stupid not to allow these two teams to promote Tennessee basketball and Tennessee kids to the nation. Your point is "why the urgency to change the rules now?", and my point is why is there such a rule to begin with. Governing bodies shouldn't be reactive, they should be proactive, and I agree that this would be a reactive decision. If there's no valid reason to prevent teams from participating in after season tournaments (I've not heard one), they should set a limit on time and number of events, and let them play. Looks an awful lot like they (TSSAA) have nothing to gain from it , so they are indifferent.

The sole reason is because the by-laws state that after the season is over, all play stops. That's it. The TSSAA board listened to the plea. Looked at the by-laws. Made the decision. Currently, the TSSAA wants the season to end with the state tournaments, with no playing afterwards. Put the uniforms in moth balls. Until the TSSAA changes its view on post season play, then it will continue to be so. You don't have to agree, but you do have to abide. National rankings or tournaments DO NOT MATTER to the TSSAA. They can care less about them. Defined seasons DO MATTER.

 

It's going to take a concerted effort by others to get the board of the TSSAA to change how they view this. Their mind is made up on this. They aren't going to allow post season play, national tournament or whatever. It's not an urgent issue with them. It's urgent to Memphis East and Riverdale.

 

They already know that some folk are going to be upset with this decision. It comes with the job.

 

If you wonder where I stand. I agree with the TSSAA on this.

You have misinterpreted my stance...I wholeheartedly agree that there has to be a logical thought process when dealing with policy, and not using a "special circumstance" such as a high national ranking or prestigious tournament invitation to invoke a knee jerk reaction. My disappointment is with the disregard that the TSSAA has for the interest's of the kids. Once in a lifetime opportunities are just that...it's gone for this class, but needs to be addressed for the future, and should have been discussed before now. I get the whole "defined season" standpoint, but extending that timeframe beyond their tournament couldn't have much of a negative impact except to diminish the perspective that the TSSAA is the be and end all, and has total dominion over member schools.

Anybody from the Memphis area know anything about my comment above?

 

Ramirez and other district leaders have been meeting with East families and alumni in recent months and working through issues related to the redesign — not the least of which is what will happen to the school’s athletic programs. Sports teams have long been a source of pride for East and its midtown neighborhood. Just last fall, the school’s football team brought home a state championship title. Ramirez said the new all-optional school will continue to offer the same athletic programs for boys and girls.

I agree. However, listening to the local radio sports talk during the day, it seems that some folk didn't think too highly of the idea of sending the team to NYC on the County's dime. There will always be a hater in the crowd.

Nice gesture of sending the team there even though they are not playing, I think its a way of the SCIAA implying that they support their boys even if the TSSAA won't.

I agree. I think that this has Dorsey's fingerprints all over it. The school system pays for the trip. The marketing firm pays for all of the activities that the team will participate in. That's pretty cool.

      Began as a discussion, and evolved into a trainwreck...   Don't know how many of the TC "old guard" are left, but I feel for y'all.   Everybody has to get the last word... no matter the cost and sometimes the cost is high.

      He may have possibly said that to get the best out of him. Back when I was in school word got out I was going to transfer and Coach Story popped off and ask Coach Wilson in front of the team if Maryville was going to get a jock strap in return on this trade. That got back to me and I got fired up and stayed just to show them up. Now today Coach Story is one of my best friends.

      Dylan's Dad, I'm glad you replied. I wanted to reply but wasnt willing to take the bait. There were 20 wrestlers on the team. I may be mistaken and correct me if I'm wrong but I believe 5 of the 20 attend McCallie right now and one will next year. At most, there are/were 6 kids on that team who attend McC. That leaves 14 other team members who have ZERO affiliation with McC (outside of maybe some friends) who represented our state to the best of their ability and wrestled their butts off that weekend. That weekend was a first for Tennessee and obviously a small step in the right direction for us as a state. Congratulations TEAM TN BLACK!
