I hate that Brayden’s match ended that way. He was wrestling tough and had the lead before the injury cut the match short. I know I’m biased but I think he was going to win even if Sam hadn’t got hurt. He had been pumped up all week and was ready to take Latona out. Hopefully Latona isn’t injured too bad, and can finish the season out.

Agreed. That was one of the biggest matches of his high school career. Latona is one of the best in the country.  #17 nationally at 120 according to flow. And i fully believe Brayden was ready and could hang with him. Getting the first takedown was huge, unfortunately injuries are part of the sport. Hopefully these 2 meet again down the line somewhere. And hopefully Sam is ok.

Palmer and Latona wrestled in Virginia Beach freshman season. Palmer won by fall.

Interesting. Yet somehow Latona is ranked nationally and Palmer ive never even seen mentioned... makes sense. Smh. That’s ok though. Rankings clearly don’t win matches. Congrats to Brayden on the tournament title and to Beech on a great tournament. That lightweight stretch from 106-126 is deadly. Throw in Hulsey and/or Smith, plus Herron at 45 and Rippy at 52 and you have a real murderers row.

There is the link to the match from their freshman year. As for the rankings, I can’t really argue with it after Sam has won Fargo, placed in the Super 32, etc. Latona has accomplished a lot on the national scene since that match from their freshman year which is why he has earned that ranking. I do agree that rankings don’t win the match, and ultimately mean nothing once you step on the mat.

Very true. He has a lot of accolades nationally.

Winning a Tennessee state championship alone will not get anyone ranked as it is not recognized as one of the top wrestling states in the US.

Just beating a nationally ranked kid won’t get a wrestler ranked.  River Henry has 3 wins this season over top 20 nationally ranked wrestlers and he has not been able to get ranked by either intermat or Flo.  River hasn’t competed in the big events other than his 2nd at National Prep last year so he doesn’t have the exposure needed to get ranked.

cbg I would add UWW, Flonationals, Cheesehead, Prep Nationals, NSHCA Senior Nationals, and  who’s number one to your list.  Getting AA at one of these and the ones on your list will help get a kid ranked.

KC STAMPEDE. Prep Slam, Freakshow, NSHCA freshman, sophomore and Junior nationals, Preseason Nationals, TOC, Grappler, anyone of the USA regionals, etc... are all solid tourneys that give a chance for kids to wrestle national ranked wrestlers but they are not they tourneys that getting AA will help get a wrestler national ranked.

As far as state champs, I doubt there is evan a state champ in Ohio, NJ or PA that’s ranked without having an AA at one of the major tourneys.  It helps them where a TN state title doesn’t help our kids but they will still need more accolades to get ranked.

If you look at our TN ranked kids,

1. Mason was on the World team .. enough said..

2. Kramer has back to back Super32 AA

3. Cooper(if we can still count him as a TN kid) Fargo AA, UWW AA, and Beast of East AA.
