Ponte Vedra, Bartram Trail boys tie for fifth in state golf tourney

Both Bartram Trail and Ponte Vedra golfers made big improvements in the second round of the Class 2A boys state championship to finish tied for fifth.

Playing at Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howey-in-the-Hills on Wednesday, Bartram was 16 strokes better than Tuesday’s first round to finish with a team score of 642. Ponte Vedra improved by a dozen strokes to earn the same score.

First-round leader Lakewood Ranch held on to win by six strokes over Spruce Creek with a score of 621.

David Novakoski of Ponte Vedra had the best showing of any county golfer. He shot a 74 in the second round and ended the tournament at 156. Also scoring for the Sharks were Anthony Scolapio (158), Marcus Plunkett (163) and Kevin Slayden (167).

Bartram was led by Kiernan Murphy, who fired a 75 on Wednesday to finish with 157. Other Bartram golfers included: Logan Lanier (158), Andrew Scalf (164) and Devin Surri (166).

Girls golf

Ponte Vedra finished 11th in the Class 2A state championship with a score of 713.

Niceville was the winner at 656.

Baylee Vigil led the Sharks with a two-day total of 176.

Other Ponte Vedra golfers included: Aleya Peete (177), Miri Sumida (178) and Aisha Peete (182).
