Local: Palatka defeats SAHS girls in OT

Palatka hit a late 3-pointer to force overtime, then held off St. Augustine for a 63-60 win Thursday in girls basketball.

The Yellow Jackets dropped their second straight game to open the season, while Palatka is off to a 2-0 start against county teams after besting Menendez in its opener.

Jasmine Kearse tallied 27 points, including 15 from the free throw line. Briana Maxwell and Dariana Tobler each added eight and Allison Abbott chipped in with six.

Bartram Trail 64, Ponte Vedra 41

Nine different players scored as the Bears toppled the Sharks.

Allie Mano led the way with 16 points, while Melissa Coggins contributed 14 and Madison French added 11.

Kelsey Chisholm tossed in nine as well for the Bears (2-0).

For the Sharks (0-2), Megan Piggott tallied 13 points. Taylor Runge had 10 and Tori Koski tacked on seven. Katie Dalton also pulled down eight rebounds.

Mandarin 58, Nease 47

The Mustangs nailed seven 3-pointers to sink the Panthers in their season opener.

Niki Perez scored 19 points to pace Nease. Sam Paczkowski added 12 points and 11 rebounds.

St. Joseph 48, Creekside 37

The Flashes picked up their first win of the season with a victory over the Knights.

Cassidy Bailey scored 16 points. Heather Volk added 12 and Nicole Sarris tacked on 10.

Jackie George contributed with nine rebounds and Sara Stephens had three blocks.

For the Knights (0-2), Nicole Tufano had 11 points to lead the way. Lindsay Stevens followed with nine and Jeanie Verderese chipped in with seven.

Girls soccer

Sarah Raynor scored three goals to lead St. Joseph Academy to a 5-1 victory over Eagle's View.

Morgan Burgess and Ashley Downs each added a goal for the Flashes (2-1). Recording assists were Emily Bartlett, Chloe Petito.

Boys basketball

Denzell Hayden scored 18 points in a 63-45 preseason win over West Nassau. Blake McClain added 17 points, and Jared Washington chipped in with eight.

Palatka 57, Menendez 54

The Falcons played a tight preseason game with visiting Palatka. Tityus Mitchell led the Falcons with 15 points. Dakota Dobson added 13 points.

St. Augustine 50, Middleburg 43

The Yellow Jackets won their second preseason game as Richard Bryson scored 16 points.

Nick Stultz and BJ Esguerra each added nine points.

Boys soccer

The Yellow Jackets improved to 3-2 with a shutout win over the Blue Devils.

Gerald Rachbauer had two goals and an assist. Juan Narvaez added two goals and an assist. Mauricio Coloma tallied a goal and an assist and Arnold Ramon recorded a goal. Slater Canan notched the other goal.

Goalkeeper Carl Aycock had six saves in the win.

Danny Almeida scored two goals for the Bears (0-4) in a losing effort. Goalkeeper Justin Smith collected eight saves.

Creekside 1, Fernandina Beach 1

Bryce Overbey scored on a pass from Steven Youker as the Knights played to a tie.
