Warner Carries No. 8 Bucs to GSC Finals, 67-59

Zack Warner scored 27 points to carry the No. 8 Bucs to a 67-59 win over West Georgia Saturday, clinching a berth in tomorrow's GSC championship game.
Box Score NICEVILLE, Fla.—Senior forward Zack Warner (St. Louis, Mo., Clayton HS) scored 16 of his 27 points in the second half to lead the No. 8 Christian Brothers University Bucs to a 67-59 win over West Georgia Saturday night and a berth in tomorrow afternoon's Gulf South Conference championship game against No. 3 Alabama-Huntsville.

The Bucs (23-5) never trailed in the second half, but the Wolves (22-8) tied the game as late as 45-45 with 13:01 remaining.  Warner sank three free throws to start a 7-1 burst that put the Bucs in front for good, capped by a Scott Dennis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) layup that gave the Bucs a 52-46 edge with 8:46 remaining. 

The Wolves never came closer than three points again.  When they did cut the CBU edge to 58-55 on back-to-back Da'Ron Sims baskets with 2:56 remaining, Harry Green (Memphis, Tenn./White Station HS) answered with a triple, and the Bucs salted the game away by making six of seven free throws in the final minute.

Warner scored his 27 points on 11-of-14 shooting from the floor, including 1-of-2 from three-point range and 4-of-5 at the free throw line.  He added eight rebounds, three assists, and two blocks as he played all 40 minutes.  Dennis scored 14 points with eight rebounds and three assists, and Green added nine points, seven rebounds, and five assists.

Sims scored a game-high 28 points on 12-of-17 shooting, adding seven rebounds and an assist in 40 minutes.  Ryan Godfrey scored 12 points, making 3-of-5 three-pointers.

The Bucs shot 55.6 percent (25-of-45) for the game, making 76.9 percent (20-of-26) of their two-point shots to overcome a 26.3 percent (5-of-19) shooting night from beyond the arc.  The Wolves were 42.1 percent (24-of-57) overall.

The Bucs out-rebounded UWG 29-27, but the Wolves had a 12-5 edge in offensive rebounds and forced nine CBU turnovers while committing five.

The Bucs play in the championship game tomorrow afternoon at approximately 1:30 p.m. against No. 3 Alabama-Huntsville, 87-84.  The game will be carried live on CSS, Mediacom, ESPN Full Court, and ESPN3.  The Bucs are in the championship game for the second time since joining the GSC, and the first since 2008, when they defeated Harding 93-89.
