Region 5A-3 final

North Fort Myers 2, Kissimmee Osceola 1: The Red Knights are in the state Class 5A semifinals for the first time in school history after Tuesday’s road win. North Fort Myers (17-2-3) takes on Archbishop McCarthy (17-4-1) on Friday in Fort Lauderdale. North spotted Osceola an early lead in the eighth minute, then got the equalizer from Sophia Kerns about five minutes later. The Red Knights took the lead for good with 22 minutes remaining in the match on Evie McCarthy’s goal. McCarthy, who assisted on Kerns’s goal, had a helper from Hannah Billhorn on her game-winner. It’s the first Final Four berth for the Red Knights.

“Unreal effort in the second half,” Red Knights coach Nick Erickson said. “Our girls deserved the result. Very scrappy game with some missed opportunities on our end. However, at the end of the day it’s survive and advance!”

North, playing the road warrior role after an upset at the hands of the Cape Coral Seahawks in the District 5A-11 final, is the only Class 5A girls Final Four team to get there as a district runner-up.
