Prep Roundup: West Port holds off Wildcats, 10-9

The West Port softball team defeated the Forest Wildcats 10-9 on Tuesday night at Forest High School. The win was the Wolf Pack's first-ever against Forest during the regular season.

Madison Duncan went 2-for-3 with a grand slam home run, and Alyssa Pugh finished 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs.

West Port's Tiara Chavis had six strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings pitched and Ryleigh Bauer (3-0) picked up the win after going 3 1/3 innings with two strikeouts.

West Port (5-0) is now ranked No. 10 in the Miracle Sports state softball poll. It's the first time in school history that the Wolf Pack softball team is ranked in the top 10.

West Port plays at North Marion on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Vanguard 19, Lake Weir 17 (8 innings): At Lake Weir, Lia Vanrijk (2-for-2, 3 walks, RBI), Victoria Graham (2-for-5, double, 2 RBIs, 4 runs) and Regan White (double, 4 RBIs, 2 runs) led the way at the plate for Vanguard.

Bryanna Curry pitched eight innings and had eight strikeouts for the Knights (1-1) who host North Marion on Thursday at 6 p.m.

For Lake Weir, Leelee Graham (3-for-6, double, 2 RBIs), Jessica Hallford (2-for-6, double, RBI), and Melani Mister (2-for-4, 4 RBIs) paced the Hurricanes at the plate.

Lake Weir (0-5) travels to Forest next Friday for a 6 p.m. first pitch.

BASEBALL

North Marion 18, Belleview 1: At North Marion, Cooper Jones (3 hits, double, home run, 5 RBIs, 4 runs scored), Deric Fabian (3 hits, home run, 2 RBIs, 3 runs), Nate Fennewald (2 hits, double), Wyatt Campbell (2 hits, home run, 2 RBIs), and Connor Burks (2 hits, double) led the offensive attack for the Colts.

Wyatt Caley (1-0) picked up the win after giving up only one run on two hits with three strikeouts. 

North Marion (2-0) plays at Trinity Catholic on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Vanguard 4, Lake Weir 2: At Vanguard, Brayden Ballard surrendered only three hits with four strikeouts over five innings to help lead the Knights over the Hurricanes on Tuesday.

Jake Tompkins (1-0) picked up the win in two innings of relief with two strikeouts. Lake Weir's Manny Geisel pitched five innings and gave up zero hits or earned runs with eight strikeouts. Geisel also went 1-for-3 with a double. Austin Dodd (double, run scored) and Johnny Dobkowski (1-for-3, RBI, walk) contributed at the plate offensively for Lake Weir.

Vanguard (3-0) hosts Tavares on Friday at 6 p.m. Lake Weir hosts Leesburg on Friday at 7 p.m.

Forest 16, Williston 8: At Forest, Brady Vowinkel was the winning pitcher for the Wildcats with four strikeouts in four innings. Adam Muniz (2 hits, 2 doubles), Tyler Rodgers (2 hits), and Brady Degroot (hit, 2 RBIs, 2 runs) led the way for Forest.

Forest (1-1) plays at Lake City Columbia on Thursday at 7 p.m.
