Santa Fe Catholic, Discovery fall in region finals

FORT LAUDERDALE — Fort Lauderdale Calvary Christian jumped out to a 10-point lead after the first quarter and defeated Santa Fe Catholic 75-58 on Friday night in the Class 3A, Region 3 final at Calvary Christian.

"They were the better team tonight," Santa Fe coach Mike Blicher said. "Last year when we lost, I thought we were the better team most nights. They were the better team this year."

Calvary Christian jumped to a 16-6 lead after the first quarter, and Santa Fe never recovered. By halftime, Calvary Christian led 36-17.

Santa Fe outscored Calvary Christian by two points in the second half, with most of the advantage coming in the fourth quarter, but by then it was too late.

Alvin Tumblin led Santa Fe Catholic (14-11) with 17 points. Johnny Torrence scored 11 points. Trey Lane, the 3-point specialist, was held scoreless until the fourth quarter and made just one 3-pointer to finish with five points.

Carl Cherenfant led a balanced attack for Calvary Christian, which had four players score in double figures. Cherenfant finished with 15 points, Gregg Glenn scored 14 points, and Taylor Hendricks and Dylan Canoville scored 12 points each.

Astronaut 59, Discovery 45

TITUSVILLE — Astronaut earned a spot in the state tournament with a victory over Discovery in the 4A-3 region final.

For Astronaut (26-3), it matches the longest postseason run in school history. The program was represented in the state semifinal round in 1976 and '80.

For Discovery (14-7), the trip to the region finals was its best finish in the school's short history of varsity basketball.
