It's tournament season, and the Volusia-Flagler area produced a "sweet 16" of its own this weekend.

Sixteen local wrestlers, representing five programs, qualified for this week's Florida High School Athletic Association wrestling championships. The state finals are set to begin at 10 a.m. Friday from the Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee.

New Smyrna Beach crowned a pair of individual champions en route to a first regional team title since 2000  — Jamey Bruner (34-3, 126 pounds) and Michael Shannon (36-2, 145). Shannon scored a major decision victory over Mosley's Nick Hejke in the final, and Bruner defeated Middleburg's Riley Girgis by a 10-5 decision.
