Tremendous 10: Sabat, Lopez led offensive charge

Here are the top performances from the week of Feb. 22-27.

1 Lakeland Christian sophomores Maddie Lopez and Carly Sabat (girls soccer) led the Vikings' offensive outburst in helping to lead their team back to the state title game. Sabat scored three goals in two matches, and Lopez finished with two goals and an assist.

2 Bartow senior Walter Clayton (boys basketball) had a double-double with 30 points and 10 rebounds in the regional final and averaged 29 points, 7.5 points and 5.0 assists in the two regional playoff games.

3 Kathleen senior Marcellus Thomas (boys basketball) scored 23 points on 8 of 11 shooting to lead the Red Devils to a three-point victory over Plant City in the regional semifinals. 

4 Lake Gibson's Tristan Middlebrook (wrestling) won all three of his matches in the 220-pound weight class, pinning his opponents, to run his record to 24-1. His match clinched the Class 2A, Region 3 team title for the Braves. 

5 Lake Wales senior Mac Updike (boys track and field) ran a personal-best 9:24.30 to win the 3,200 at the Satellite High Reggie Johnson Memorial Meet. He is now ranked fourth all time in Polk County since 2000.

6 Lakeland senior Gabriel Brownlow-Dindy (boys track and field) won the discus and shot put at the St. Cloud Invitational. He won the discus with a throw of 165-01 and the shot put with a throw of 52-08.75.

7 Bartow freshman Katelynn Oxley (softball) pitched a three-hit shutout over eight innings with 13 strikeouts and just one walk in Bartow's 2-0 victory over Lake Region.

8 Kathleen senior I’Asia Wilson (girls track and field) ran 11.91 seconds to win the 100-meter dash and set a meet record in the event at the St. Cloud Invitational. 

9 Auburndale sophomore Kassidy Pontbriant (softball) went 3-for-4 and supplied the power with a home run and three RBIs, and Gena Stutz proved the pitching with she allowed just one run on six hits with seven strikeouts in a victory over George Jenkins.

10 Lakeland Christian pitcher Joey Willis (baseball) pitched a one-hitter over six innings with nine strikeouts and three walks in the Vikings' 9-0 victory over Tampa Prep.
