Merritt Island soccer teams lead FHSAA academic awards

Merritt Island's soccer teams swept the FHSAA Academic Team Championship this season, the girls leading the state with a 3.842 grade point average and the boys doing the same at 3.734.

The FHSAA recognizes teams each season for posting a team GPA of at least 3.0 on an unweighted 4.0 scale.

Rockledge's boys also made the soccer list with a 3.265, and West Shore was on the 3A list at 3.583. The Rockledge girls (3.493) and those from West Shore (3.687) also made their class lists.

Merritt Island was fifth in Class 5A boys basketball with a 3.511, followed by No. 8 Rockledge (3.358). West Shore placed ninth in 3A boys basketball (3.475) and Covenant Christian (3.235) made the 2A list.

Merritt Island's girls basketball team was sixth in 5A at 3.454 and Rockledge 10th (3.382). West Shore's qualified in 3A (3.519) as did Covenant Christian in 2A at 3.401.

Wrestling teams from Merritt Island (3.207) and Rockledge (3.201) both made the 1A list of honorees.

Rockledge grad honored at FGCU

Rockledge graduate Mason Studstill was named the ASUN Pitcher of the Week after starting his season with an 8-0 win over 21st-ranked Florida Atlantic.

Studstill pitched eight innings, allowing two hits and walking three. He had seven consecutive strikeouts during the course of the game. Studstill's ERA is 1.33 and he has struck out 20 batters.
