College signings: Eight from Naples High sign letters of intent Friday

Naples High School had a signing ceremony for eight student-athletes moving on to college Friday morning.

Three of the players were from the boys basketball team, although one, James Cone, will be in a different sport in college. Cone is going to Rollins College, an NCAA Division II school, for crew/rowing, and is going to the highest classification of the eight signees. 

Guards Byntley Theork and Zach Johnson are going to Ridgewater Community College, a junior college in Minnesota. 

The boys basketball team went 25-5 this season, a year after making the state semifinals. They lost in the regional final this season.

Theork was Daily News second-team All-Area, and Cone received honorable mention. Theork was second on the team in scoring at 13.9 points per game, while Johnson averaged 5.6 and Cone averaged 5.4.

Girls golfer Ashley Zimmermann was the lone Daily News first-team All-Area selection to sign Friday. She is headed to Southern Union Community College, a junior college, in Wadley, Alabama.

Zimmermann was second at the CCAC and district tournaments, and placed fifth at regionals. She shot 87-80/167, third-best among area players at state tournaments, and tied for 29th in Class 2A.

Boys soccer players Stephen Bole, Mischael Francois and Andry Salazar are going to Oglethorpe University and Eastern Florida State, and State Fair (Mo.) Community College, respectively. Oglethorpe is an NCAA Division III school in Georgia, while Eastern Florida State and State Fair are junior colleges.

Francois was second-team All-Area, while both Bole and Salazar received honorable mention.

Baseball player Carson Fellows will be going to Lakeland (Ohio) Community College, also a junior college. He had four homers and 30 RBIs this season.
