One Broward County baseball player and two Broward coaches earned state-wide honors in their classifications.
Archbishop McCarthy pitcher Andrew Ildefonso was voted the Florida Dairy Farmers’ Class 5A Player of the Year. Stoneman Douglas coach Todd Fitz-Gerald was voted the Class 7A Coach of the Year, and North Broward Prep’s Brian Campbell was voted Class 4A Coach of the Year.
Ildefonso helped take the Mavericks to the Class 5A title game. The sophomore starred in the batter’s box and on the pitcher’s mound. He went 9-1 with one save and a 1.10 ERA, striking out 78 batters in 63 2/3 inning. Ildefonso hit .352 with a .943 OPS, driving in 17 runs.
Fitz-Gerald piloted one of the best teams in the nation to its second state championship. Stoneman Douglas went 28-2 and finished the season ranked second in the nation by Perfect Game and fourth by MaxPreps. Fitz-Gerald has a career record of 446-119.
Campbell led the Eagles to a 20-10-1 record and the first state title in program history. North Broward Prep excelled in close games, winning five straight one-run games to reach the state title game. Campbell has a career record of 206-165.
Ildefonso is a finalist for Florida Dairy Farmers’ Mr. Baseball. Fitz-Gerald and Campbell are finalists for the state-wide Coach of the Year award.
Stoneman Douglas outfielder Roman Anthony finished third in the voting in Class 7A. Dwyer coach Alex Morales finished third in the voting in Class 6A, and Cardinal Gibbons coach Jason Hamilton finished second in the voting in Class 5A.
