State of Florida Recruiting H.Q. Weekend Recap: McClendon commits to South Carolina

Lake Gibson rising senior S JyVonte McClendon verbally committed to South Carolina on Sunday. 

McClendon had 37 tackles, two interceptions and broke up four passes last season.

The 6-foot-2, 180-pound McClendon had more than a dozen offers, including Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Miami, Oklahoma, Penn State and Virginia Tech. 

He is the second Florida safety to commit to South Carolina in the past month joining Godby's Kajuan Banks.

Lake Mary QB headed to USF

Gunnar Smith, Lake Mary's rising senior QB, verbally committed to USF on Friday. The Buils offered Smith on June 4.

Smith (6-foot-4, 180 pounds) has started for Lake Mary since his freshman year. He has completed 57.9 percent of his passes for for 6,075 yards and 61 touchdowns in his varsity career. 

Kentucky also offered Smith. He is the second player to commit to the Bulls,  joining Sickles WR Javohn Thomas. 

Vanguard's Hopkins commits to Coastal Carolina

Vanguard rising senior ATH Elijah Hopkins verbally committed to Coastal Carolina on Sunday.

The 5-foot-11, 175-pound Hopkins also had offers from Arkansas State, Southern Miss, UAB, USF and others. Hopkins rushed for 703 yards and six scores in 2020. He also had 24 tackles, forced three fumbles and intercepted two passes. 

Hopkins is the third Florida player in the class of 2022 to commit to play for the Chanticleers, joining Rockledge WR Rian Black and St. Thomas Aquinas CB Jerrod Cameron.

Alabama offered Miami Edison rising junior WR Nathaniel Joseph and Seabreeze rising senior P Mac Chiumento. it is the first offer for Chiumento. 

Cardinal Newman rising freshman QB Davi Belfort was offered by Florida State. 

Wekiva rising sophomore DE Sincere Edwards added a Mississppi State offer 

Miami offered Vero Beach rising junior WR Vandervious Jacobs, Jones rising sophomore DL D'antre Robinson  and Vanguard rising sophomore ATH Jamil Watkins. 

Clearwater Academy International rising junior OL Lucas Simmons added an offer from Oklahoma. 

Pinellas Park rising senior K/P Robert Gunn was offered by Clemson. 

West Orange rising senior CB Javan Robinson added a Washington State offer.
