JONESBOROUGH — Bella Ferguson might hold more than just a David Crockett girls basketball record if she keeps this up.
Honored before Thursday’s game for having recorded 529 assists, a Lady Pioneers record, the junior added nine more in an 81-41 triumph over Hampton.
One more assist and one more point would’ve given Ferguson a double-double. She buried two 3-pointers in the second quarter to help the Lady Pioneers (5-1) pad their lead quickly. And she also grabbed six rebounds.
“Bella is just a true leader, very unselfish,” Crockett coach Thomas Gouge said. “Crazy that she’s already over 500 assists six games into her junior year. She’s a great teammate. Best passer I’ve ever seen, boys or girls side. She’s just an unbelievable player.”
Four Crockett players did score in double figures, led by a 20-point effort from Brylee Tullock. Her second triple gave the Lady Pioneers a 13-2 lead right out of the gate.
Laney Britton and Aaliyah Story flirted with double-doubles themselves, each grabbing seven rebounds. Britton hit from deep twice in the first half before finishing with 19 points.
“Laney played some really good basketball tonight,” Gouge said. “We also got a lot of energy off the bench from Kayleigh Doner and Hailey Wilson. First time this year we felt like we clicked.”
Like Britton, Story made two field goals in the opening quarter. Story finished with 14 points and blocked three shots. Doner added 10 points and Wilson eight off the bench.
Hampton (3-4), which moved up to Class 2A this season, got nine points from Taylor Berry and eight from Brea Hicks.
Berry’s 3-pointer helped the Lady Bulldogs cut the early deficit to 24-8, and Hicks made two 3-pointers in the third quarter. Faye Carrico and Ella Eastep both had six points.
Crockett, fresh off its Hardee’s Classic championship, scored the game’s first 10 points and steadily built on its lead throughout the game.
