CHS splits league twinbill with Irish

After having a lead slip away in the first game, the Concordia High School softball team hung on for a 10-7 victory in the second game of a North Central Kansas League doubleheader Tuesday at the Concordia Sports Complex.
Concordia had a 5-1 lead through three innings in game one, only to have Chapman rally for an 11-10 victory.
The Panthers got up 10-4 in game two, and turned back a comeback attempt by the Irish.
Chapman scored two runs in the first inning and one in the top of the second to go up 3-0.
Sending nine batters to the plate, Concordia put up five runs in the bottom of the third inning and would not trail again.
Rachelle Anderson and Hailey Budke singled.
Kira Kearn tripled to drive in two runs and scored on a ground ball by Arista Bombardier.
A run in the top of the third inning left Chapman trailing just 5-4.
The Panthers answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning, and led 7-4.
Anderson led off the inning with a single. She would score on the second triple of the game by Kearn.
A ground ball by Kassidy Leiszler got Kearn home.
Concordia added three runs in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 10-4.
Haley Lewis got things started with a base hit.
Taegen Larsen reached base on a fielder's choice and Kendall Reynolds singled to drive in the first run.
Larsen scored on a ground ball by Allison Poore.
Budke singled to drive in Reynolds.
Scoring three runs in the top of the fifth inning, the Irish closed the gap to 10-7.
Concordia shut Chapman out over the final two innings to earn the split.
McKenzie Widen picked up the win. She gave up seven unearned runs on 10 hits, struck out five and walked three.
The Panthers scored 10 runs on 13 hits.
Anderson had three hits in four at bats and scored two runs.
Kearn was 2-for-3 at the plate, drove in three runs and scored two.
Larsen had two hits and scored two runs.
Reynolds and Lewis had two hits each.
Game one was tied at 1-1 through two innings.
Four runs in the third inning gave Concordia a 5-1 lead.
Reynolds and Poore each singled with one out.
Poore doubled to drive in two runs. She scored on a double by Anderson.
Budke knocked in a run with a single.
A base hit by Kearn plated Budke.
Chapman tied the game at 5-5 with four runs in the top of the fourth inning.
Larsen singled and scored on a ground ball by Anderson in the bottom of the fourth, and the Panthers had the lead back at 6-5.
Chapman tacked on four runs in the top of the fifth inning to go on top 9-6.
Concordia, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth, knotted it at 9-9.
Leiszler singled and Kearn reached on a fielder's choice.
A double by Larsen got two runs home.
Reynolds then singled to drive in Larsen.
Chapman took an 11-9 lead with two runs in the top of the seventh inning.
With two out in the bottom of the seventh, Reynolds singled. She stole second and third and scored on a passed ball to get the Panthers within a run, 11-10.
A strikeout ended the game.
Budke pitched all seven innings, and gave up 11 runs, 10 earned, on 16 hits. She struck out two and walked two.
Reynolds had five hits in five at bats and scored three runs.
Anderson had two hits and drove in four runs.
Larsen was 2-for-5 with two runs batted in.
Budke, Leiszler and Kearn had two hits each.
Concordia will host Abilene next Tuesday.
