Preps notebook: City track athletes shine at Little KU Relays

Lawrence High junior Ella Stewart launches a discus during the Little KU Relays Wednesday afternoon at LHS. Stewart won the event for the Lions.

During warmups, Lawrence High junior Ella Stewart was off by herself. And there is a reason for that.

Stewart discovered that she’s been getting too amped up during the discus competition. Her best throws are in warmups. So, as a result, Stewart has started to work on ways to ensure that she calms her nerves down.

Due to advice from her dad, Stewart will sometimes listen to classical music before a competition. She will always find time to herself in the moments leading up to her best event.

“I’ll be fine in warmups, I’ll be launching throws way further than I’ve ever thrown,” Stewart said. “Then I’ll hear my name when it’s my turn, and my heart just starts beating so fast. I just overthink everything.”

That wasn’t the case this time around, as Stewart won the girls discuss competition with a toss of 105 feet, 7 inches Wednesday afternoon at LHS. It is still less than her personal-best toss, though it is a step in the right direction.

But the Little KU Relays was the perfect place to see it all come into fruition. Stewart wanted to compete in KU Relays, but understood that she hasn’t hit her peak yet.

“This meet is on my home turf and I’m used to that ring,” Stewart said. “My goal this year was to do KU Relays, but I was really struggling to get out of my head in the previous meets. I’m glad I made the most out of this meet.”

Free State sophomore Cole Wenger finishes the 300-meter hurdles during the Little KU Relays Wednesday afternoon at LHS. Wenger won the event for the Firebirds.

That was the case for many city athletes, who thrived in a less-intense meet. Stewart was one of seven Lions to take home individual victories in the event. On the girls side, Mariah Reed won the high jump with a leap of 5-00.00. Krissy Howard, who signed her national letter of intent to Ottawa University before the meet, won shot put with a throw 34-00.00.

Brenna Schwada won the 200-meter run (27.76) and 400-meter run (1:02.17). For the boys, Ben King recorded a winning-throw of 151-03 in the javelin competition. Corbin Pruitt clinched first in the 110 hurdles with a 16.42. Jack Ryan won the 3,200-meter run with a time of 10:41.45.

The Firebirds, meanwhile, had four different first-place finishes during Wednesday’s meet. Liliana King-Wilson won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.98, while placing first in the 300 hurdles with mark of 50.79. Haley Hippe recorded a launch of 117-03 to win the girls javelin competition.

Henry Nelson of Bishop Seabury competes in the 800-meter run Wednesday afternoon at LHS during the Little KU Relays on April 17, 2019.

Sophomore Cole Wenger was the lone boy to win for FSHS, finishing first in the 300 hurdles with a personal-best time of 43.40. He also placed second in the 110-meter hurdles.

“I feel like I could have pushed myself a little bit more in the 110 hurdles,” Wenger said. “This meet is good, I like the competition. Having the LHS guys here is nice.”

Henry Nelson was the lone Bishop Seabury athlete to win an event, placing first in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:35.17.
