The Lions have done it again.

Lawrence’s baseball team scored three runs in the fifth to erase an early deficit en route to a 3-1 win over Shawnee Mission West Thursday night at LHS. Lawrence (11-4, 6-3 Sunflower League) has now won eight games in a row, and hasn’t lost since April 4.

Garrett Romero started the rally with a one-out single, and Caleb Mondi followed suit with a base knock. After a walk by Ryan Lauts, Devin Neal played all three runs with a triple to right to give the Lions a 3-1 advantage. Payton Cummins was the only Lion to notch multiple hits, including a double.

Jake Miller went the distance, allowing one run off four hits over seven frames. He threw 52 pitches, striking out two batters and walking one.

Lawrence plays host to Bishop Miege at 5:30 p.m. Monday.

Free State’s win streak snapped

All streaks must come to an end.

Free State’s baseball team finally lost for the first time since mid-March with a 5-3 defeat at Olathe East. It ended a 14-game win streak by the Firebirds, who recorded five hits and committed four errors in the loss.

Free State (14-3, 8-1 Sunflower League) gave up nine hits and dive runs. It marked the first time since the season opener that FSHS gave up more than two runs in a game.

FSHS will play host to Shawnee Mission South at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Seahawks cruise to 7-1 win

The Bishop Seabury girls soccer team rolled past Topeka Heritage Christian Academy for a 7-1 win Thursday night.

Due to injuries, BSA was only able to field 10 players but the opposition showed great sportsmanship by also playing 10 players. Emily Heinz scored six of the team’s seven scores, including five in the first half. She now has 17 goals in only seven matches after her third consecutive game with at least four goals.

Summer Hartzler scored the other goal for the Seahawks.

Bishop Seabury will play host to Heritage on Monday.

Firebirds claim 4-1 win

Free State’s softball recorded a 4-1 win over Olathe East Thursday night on the road.

Two days after pitching a perfect game, sophomore Tatum Clopton struck out 12 batters en route to another win. Clopton, an Oklahoma State commit, is now 8-1 on the year. As a team. FSHS recorded six hits and held the opposition to three knocks.

Free State (13-2) plays host to LHS at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

LHS softball suffers 2 losses

Lawrence’s softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against Gardner-Edgerton Thursday night.

LHS dropped a 10-3 decision in the first game before losing by a 15-0 margin in five innings in the nightcap. Karly Johnson recorded her fourth homer of the season and played strong defense for the Lions.

Angelina Harjo extended her win streak to 10 games with two hits in the first game and one in the second. Kate Williams and Jesse Cox each tallied a double as well.

LHS (1-12) will travel to Shawnee Mission South on Monday.

City swim team shine

Free State and Lawrence High girls swim teams dominated Thursday’s quadrangular at Shawnee Mission North.

A Firebird or a Lion won all 12 events en route to helping the city teams claim the top-two spots on the team standings. Lawrence scored 463 points to place first, winning its eighth meet to maintain its undefeated record on the year. FSHS placed second with 399 points.

Free State junior Kasey Dunn won the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:01.58 and the 100 freestyle with a mark of 55.94. Sophomore Madi Heckman led the Lions with multiple individual wins, finishing first in the 50 freestyle (25.68) and 100 breaststroke (1:10.54).
