Valley Center golfers compete at Hesston
By The News staff
Last Updated: May 03, 2019

On April 25 the Valley Center High School golf team played a tournament at Hesston Golf Course with 13 other schools. The Hornets struggled on a very windy day and scored 433 to place 13th.

Mason Hamm had the Hornets' best score with a 95 to finish 46th. He shot a 49 on the front nine holes and a 46 on the back.

"Mason struggled with his wedge shots and had to play catch-up on multiple holes," said coach Chris Edwards. "His drives were very spot on, which helped him a lot."

Ben Warner finished 54th with a 98. He shot a 50 on the front nine and a 48 on the back.

"Ben shot a season low and was going strong on most of the first few holes," said Edwards. "He has improved 50 strokes since Sand Creek a few weeks ago."

Derek Barton was 74th with a score of 118 and Cade Martin was 77th with a 122. Barton returned after missing last week's tournament and Martin also splits time playing tennis.

Trinity Academy won the tournament with a combined score of 295. Trinity's Sam Majors won the tournament and shot a 72.

The JV team played a two-man scramble at Hidden Lakes Golf Course April 24. The event was hosted by Rose Hill. It was the second of three 18-hole scrambles the boys will play this season.

Cameron Maltz and West Schomaker combined to shoot a 91. Austin Coash and Brenden Vining shot a 120. Kobe Keomany and Aiden Smith shot a 126.

Next, varsity will play the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Division II league tournament at Winfield Country Club on May 7. JV will play at Newton's Fox Ridge on May 3.
